These two (Excel and Calvert) were among the branches I received from UCDavis.  So far this year they were my strongest rooting and growing - each branch was cut in three and virtually all survived, rooted and leafed out.

Anyone in the NJ area growing these? I'm finding that, from my recent experience and small sample size, I really like dark figs more than light - how do these guys fare in the taste test?

If I can get to Bass' get together this year I will be sure to bring my extras.

I also got Excel from UCD, it was a very good rooter and is currently growing well (I'm actually to repot mine today).

Can't really speak for taste personally, but what I've read indicates it's a good one. It might be hardy from a few blurbs I found, not sure though.

Both are super excellent, Excel is one of my favorite tasting figs.  It's not just sweet, but rich also!

Calvert is another excellent tasting fig.  Treat that cutting like gold because they only have one tree left at the UC Davis orchard.  In case you don't know, Calvert has sever FMV.  So, it helps to add more nitrogen to it every 3 years.  Good luck.

My Excel from UCD got off to a slow start, but then all put out excellent roots. I also got some Kadota cuttings. If Excel is an improved Kadota, do I need both? Of course I do.

My Excel is one of the strongest growers this year.  I don't see figs forming yet, but the stems are very thick and healthy.
