I know this sounds trivial, but I wish our members would at least let us know their first name? I can understand people (especially ladies) not putting their whole name and city...But, come on ya'll, give us at least your first name, Hopefully, there are no Jack the Ripper here, that can find you by your first name..:)

We should have a prize for the most common first name. Let's start...

I didn't start this post to be funny or mean! It's hard to address someone by their handle? How would you like to meet someone and ask them their name and told you "Fig Lover"?? Maybe, the person, at least deserves to know your first name to me, the forum is no different. Maybe, to some it's funny or cute, but to me, very serious, I like to know a Man or Ladies first name and I promise, I am not a serial killer! The first thing I do when someone post an Intro is look at their profile, so I can post their first name to welcome them here....Maybe, I am ole fashion, but to me it's very serious.....Nuff said  :)

Frank,
I agree wholeheartedly, I also think there should be a required field for state of residence, just saying.

I will never tell. Just kidding,I agree with name and state. City if possible.

First name, City, State and USDA zone seem to be the norm for a lot of us, just need to get others to follow suit.

Frank,

I agree that addressing people by there first name is ideal for polite conversation.  I get tired of looking at peoples profile and hoping they have put a first name.

Hopefully I wont be taking a drink of something at that exact moment, I might choke to death, and I don't think I want CPR from "Fig Lover"!

I don't know Calvin, might depend on what fig they were just eating.  Might be a tasty mouth to mouth! :)

I thought Puddintane was funny.
I also think first name and state, planting zone, should be required. I even added my county but not my city.

In my sig? Altitude.

All kidding aside, I prefer having first names and local info in sigs too. Thanks for bringing it up Frank.

I see nothing wrong with that Frank. Good point.

I don't need to know someone's city really but state and zone is nice to know. I recently looked up the latitude of my location and added it to my signature. Zone tells a lot but lat makes a big difference too.

It's all about plants and us people that grow them right?

Never saw a reason to not put my first name out there.

Norhayati, I like the meaning of your name!

My name is Timothy if it's not obvious.  Creativity was lacking when I made my screenname.

My name was changed to Joe by well meaning nuns in Grade 1.
My family still calls me Pino most of the time.  When I visit Italy they call me Pino except the customs officers who look at me funny because my passport doesn't match my other ID.

Is that suppose to be funny?[/QUOTE]
I thought so.  It's a continuation of the theme from the first 3 replies, and I know there are at least 2-3 other Jameses on the board, so if they check in then we Jameses can rally and match the number of Franks.

As for first names versus handles, I prefer handles.  As I noted, there are several other Jameses here, but I'm the only GreenFin.  I much prefer that people just call me by GreenFin here, since it guarantees that I'll know you're talking to me.  Furthermore, I know everyone else by their handles, and there are lots of multiples of many other peoples' first names here, so it's easier for me to know who's being talked about when they're addressed by their handle rather than by their first name.  I would prefer using first names when conversing in 'real life', but it's just easier and more precise to use handles when dealing with a huge group of people that I only know online as opposed to in 'real life'.

I respect that "GreenFin" ....But, I prefer if I am sending you an Email or a private message to at least know your first name, just seems more appropriate to me....We can still call each other by their handle but at least put their First Name on their Signature ....:)

Charles, but only my mom calls me that when she's mad.  Charlie, Chuck, Chuckster, Chas, Bud, Bubba, Buddy, Dude, Papa, Dad.  I have been called all of these in the last week so take your pick.

I don't hide out from anybody.  My pickup's license plant is the same as my user ID.

There's been many responses but it seems it would be good to clarify and suggest that folks add their first name and whatever to their signature line.

When we (Northeasterners) were preparing to go to Bass' fig Gathering this past Summer, a member I did not know offered to carpool, since they lived in upstate NY. I was bringing a friend with me, plus lots of plants, so I declined the offer. Fast-forward to the gathering: I'm doing the meet'n and greet'n, and I get to talking with a lovely woman. When she tells me her name, my heart sinks, and I hear myself mutter the most embarrassed admission to her. "CJ, I thought you were a boy..." She got a good chuckle out of that... I can faintly remember someone having another "oops" moment with a member on the forum, because their sig was not clear. With that said, I'm Rui (rhymes with Louie) and I'm a boy :)
