Hi Don & Vito..I've tasted a few varieties namely..ndc..LdA main crop..VdS and a few more but none tasted like this Black Ischia..especially the after taste that sticks

in your mouth..very sweet figs and the flavor is simply fantastic..

If it was tasting so good ,then it is Black Ischia.
The color vary with the local climate,so is nothing to worry,it is genuine.
The shape and interior is ,Ischia Black so is the weight.
If you wait longer till it ripe better like when skin shrinks it might turn Much darker.
Edit note:Mine was much darker, but ,the climate makes a big difference.

looks like I may need to have a replacement tree. I gave the wrong tree away & kept Watts variant. Herman2, is Blk Ischia as good as VdB, RdB, Aubique Petite or Blk Maderia in terms of taste. I am using these 4 variants as bench marks for dark figs. Just trying to manage collection size

Malik:Your fig is not Ischia Black.
If you know it was so good tasting, then it is a very good variety.
If you found it better than Longue D'Aout,Noire de Caromb,Violette de Sollies, then ,you should look to compare your fig to Preto, Black Madeira, and Italian 258,which your ripe fruit also resemble,.

As for Black Ischia looking at your tree,it has nothing similar to Ischia Black.
Leaves are different, leaf stem (need to be pink),is different, and above all,the eye on the green fruit is bright red on Ischia Black, and a little redness extend on the skin close to the eye area.

Hi Herman..
I do fully agree with you..
and yes it is so much difference especially the fruit..
elongated and black
unlike mine round and pale..thanks so much  for the explaination..it was well illustrated indeed.

Herman2: after going tru pictures of all the tree varieties suggested..
obviously  it's not Black Madeira I guess..the nearest that I could think of is either Italian 258 or Preto but again Preto has longer neck..
Very confusing..

The Three cultivars i suggested, are very similar in taste, and fruit color and interior.
However none of them is similar one to the other when about growing vitality,or power to produce and ripe fruits.
And when there is differences in vitality there are differences in fruit shape and size.
The best producer of ripe fruits is Ital 258,followed by Preto ,and last by Madeira Black.
If your tree grows fast in the Spring,it is ,most likely Ital 258.
Vladis:The Ischia Black you see ,is from UC Davis Germaplasm,so if your fig is different then you got a misnomer.

Herman2, Ин.Ч-И.Арендт..jpg  It looked like a fig leaf and grade Black Ischia, where he was in Russia, the NBS, Yalta.

Ин.Ч-И.Лист.Книга..jpg  I admit that there are differences in the form and fig leaf. But according to other criteria, such as 1 ripening. Figure 2. color .3. high sugar content in figs. Black Ischia from Russia is similar to the Black Ischia from France.

Vladis:The cultivar you are showing picture of fruit and leaf match exactly the Ischia Black from  UC Germaplasm so it also matches exactly my plant.
I do not see what you see different in leaves and fruits,to me they are the same.
Your plant is the same as mine but Malik plant is different.

Herman2: Thank you for the suggestion..
So from now on I guess it's appropriate for me to re-tag this cultivar as 'Italian 258' without prejudice..
Vladis..any objection?

Малик, I do not know the sort of "I 258". We can share and test figs in their climates.

Malik:It is my opinion, that the fig you have is one of those I named.
If i was you I would label it as an unknown.
You have to present more ripe fruits, during Summer,at a more ripe stage.
The fruits you presented, are not dark enough inside to be ripe Italian 258,or Preto.
It has to be dark as the pixies i have here.
If they do not get this dark inside, even darker in a warmer climate like yours then it is another cultivar.

Herman2: Noted with  thanks.
I think the best is  just leave it as 'Unknown'..at least for now.
Had an over ripe fruit before this but the pulp is not that dark enough..

Enjoy the good tasting fruits it makes, because that is what is important.
There are hundreds of distinct cultivars,so it is very hard to know exactly what it is>

So very true..couldn't agree more with you Herman2.
Thanks for your views and opinion rendered on this particular subject.

Here are some photos of the UCD Ischia Black.  The first photos are from a cutting started in 2013 and the last three photos are from a 5+ year old tree.  For me it seems to have three distinct leaf patterns.

Ok here comes another Black Ischia. I acquired this tree last year from a collector in the U.K. she has a very well known collection and assured me it was the real deal. No FMV yet( All my trees do) and finally getting a fig. Here are the pics go ahead and critique. Fig is currently ripening.

Edit note:Sorry I made a mistake,it is post #12 showing Ischia Black interior.
Post# 23 shows Italian 258 interior pulp!
