Forum members, I received a few cuttings from our kind friend Aaron Delmanto of cold hardy fig collection. One of the cuttings, I am really impressed with was called Unknown Orangeburg purple. The tree is very vigorous and it grew over 6 feet this first year. The cuttings were started for rooting this winter. The 4 trees I raised are all same height and very productive. Each has about a dozen figs and they are starting to ripen. The figs have a red color eye and very tight, almost closed even after ripening. It has not split with the heavy rains we had while my Peters honey, RdB, Alma and Ventura all split. The taste is Excellent. A perfect balance of sweetness, figgyness and a complex flavor profile very hard to describe. It is creamy yet the thin skin has a munch to it. The leaf is predominantly 3 and 5 lobes but not deeply nor serrated. Attached are pictures of leaf and fruit. Does this resemble anything close. By the way the fruit in my opinion is not purple but a deep red and more faded towards the neck. Thanks Aaron for distributing your find. I love the fig. |

Hi Alan, Its more like the RdB kind of color, may be its my phone camera and lighting. The young figs are green. They ripen to become like the one in picture. |

That's right Alan. It starts changing color from ostiole side first and progresses towards the neck. May be when we meet again this week, I will show you some that are ripening. |

Thanks Herman and Alan. Looks very very similar. Appreciate your feedback. It probably is either the same as Palermo red or closely related. |
