Prune to desired height , prune so branch does not cross over each other , prune branches that grow in toward center, prune low branches to ground, prune the very long branches that are dipping down and knock of last years figs.

Thats a start and don't be alarmed as fig trees grow back limbs and pruning will be a yearly thing
to keep tree in check .

Also make sure fingers are not in the way as that really really hurts when pruning.

I meant not mature for the figs .  ; )
Example had several ripe figs last season off 2 season old plant but it does not show
but a leaf or 2 with the thumbs .

Looking at Hermans it seems those will eventually be the dominant leaf .

Now Rich mentioned Pancetta!

Of the four which is the best?

There all good , personally i favor all of them. lol

Aged Asiago cheese to go along with the Sopressata sandwhich or a Cappicola
sandwhich is nice.

The Di Parma brand Prosciutto is our favorite at deli.
Here its about 18.00 a pound.

Homemade Cappicola and Sopressata is wonderful !

Vito would make a nice neighbor !

Figs with two crops will only bear breba (first crop) on new wood.  Cut that, you get no breba crop, or maybe one or two brebas.  Brebas are usually not the best anyway, so no big loss.  I seriously chopped a VDB to move it to our new property, and was surprised that it actually has 3 breba on it.  I thought I almost killed the thing root and top pruning.

Good luck with your cuttings!

Suzi

The breba come on last seasons wood not the new wood.
New wood bear main crop.  ;)

Pete my experience some grow well then later in season they can look much worse .
Then some look bad from the get go.

As a note as plant matures and continues to grow those leaves will not be dominant
i have seen from Hermans pictures and starting on our plant last season.

Oh yeah them rabbits are a genuine pain.
Luigi and Romeo can zig zag with the fastest of them and catch them unless they make it to the fence and out.
They make a funny ee eee noise when caught but they do not harm them.

Steve i went from 3 gallon in June  to 25 gallon container(small plant on right) in August last season with this airlayer pictured below.

One has to be carefully not to over water it or you make mush out of the roots stop the plumbing
system and likely kill the plant.

Pictures below

Art only if it was mine i would do that dont want to be blamed for something if it fail
"well Dieseler said" you know what i mean ?

But yes i would if it has a good root system and topside has no chance of recovering.
I would first make sure there are nodes below soil line and yes they will awaken
with patience.

Of it has a decent root system ratio to plant it will be fine just a mild setback.
Madeira is tougher than some give credit for.

How do i know well mine was budding out but did not like the low 40s
in evenning suring fig shuffle and died fully to soil level .
Left it be until i saw new growth that summer it came back from soil level with a little care and was topped at about 3 feet.
Good luck.

After caging your tree use small hand garden hand shovel and slowly scoup dirt away from main at ground level and uncover a node.
What you have going for you as you mention is large root system .
You can cut tree low and it should activate a node way down where you clean out the dirt around the main.
Good luck.
