I had to bring my dark figs into the lean-to because of the cool temps and rain and was able to enjoy a plate of figs today.

Looks like it does better in ground and when you dig it up in the fall it gets a root pruning too.  I'll have to try that next year.  I think production does drop off when the fig fills every nook and cranny with roots in the pot.

The Ischia Black is ripening.  I had a split one yesterday that was a little dry inside but it still had that rich Kalamata died fig flavor.  It's getting down into the fifties already at night but it's suppose to get hot again this week.  It's been dry too with no significant rain for a month.  Should be good fig weather.

Here is the progress of the root development on the REI Air Layers I started over three weeks ago.  The main crop figs are also starting to ripen.  This fig tree was sold to me as a REI but it does not match the information in the fig data base.  I have had this tree for several years and you can see that it is a slow grower.

This fig tree did not grow at all last year and I thought it was because I put some lime on it.  I repotted it last week.  This year it has put on some new growth and figs.  Maybe this will make up for the fact that my Maltese Falcon is not producing a single fig this year.

The cuttings went into the sphagnum moss on 5-2 and into the cups on 5-20 so they were in the cups for over 60 days.

I still leave access to the top so I can water it.  I'm still going to do some more air layers this week and if there are not enough roots by the end of September I can always just leave it on until next spring.

Will those cuttings be kept under lights this winter or be allowed to go dormant in a cold space?  I hope you will answer these questions.  Didn't have much luck with a broad enquiry previously.  If you do not, guess I'll just have to wing it the best I can and not expect any feedback in the future as well...  Might make learning a little harder and time consuming but I'm up to that.

I let the figs go dormant.  I do not sift the perlite.  I'd like to get the courser perlite but it's hard to source.  I just eyeball the mix and don't stick to precise measurements.

Here's a link to information on fertilizing a fig tree at the bottom of the page.

This was suppose to be about the Lebanese Red but the Zingarella impressed again and was better than the first one and I have three more left averaging 85 grams.  My Lebanese Red shows strong signs of FMV and is not very productive.  The Lebanese Red did not stand out as anything special.  The Zingarella is very productive for a container fig with both breba and main crop and is not showing signs of FMV.

The Zingarella figs are starting to swell and ripen. Seems to be a very productive tree.  I'm not sure if these are an early main crop of a breba crop?  The large ones are on last years wood so I guess that answers my question but the main crop does not seem to be far behind.

Here is the REI fig I purchased form Encanto Farms maybe 5 years ago now but the data base describes a green fig with carmine pulp.  I produced a nice fig a couple of years ago but nothing last year.  It does have a main crop developing too.  I had high expectations for the breba fig but it was not like the fig I had a couple of years ago.  I've kept it in a very small pot so that might be the reason for the low production and quality of the fig.

As I've said in the past it has almost a natural espalier growth habit and slow growth.  I've been told once that it was just a brown turkey.  Does the brown turkey have two crops?  I've never grown the brown turkey variety.

The JF&E is not UCDavis black Madeira in my opinion.  You have to ask yourself how they could produce enough plants for retail sale when it is hard enough getting cuttings and then getting them to a mature enough size so you can produce more cuttings.  If they bought cuttings on ebay for top dollar they would not just turn around and sell a successfully rooted cutting at a low price.  If they are using tissue culture it still takes time to produce a plant.  It's a relatively short period of time that has passed that this has become a popular variety to have.

Like a lot of people I purchased the Blue Ischia in the hopes it was a virus free Ischia Black.  I'm not sure what it is but it is not Ischia Black in my opinion.  The first Ischia Black fig I had was like a concentrated raspberry preserve around the eye of the fig.

It's always interesting to see the different growth characteristics of cuttings from the same variety started at the same time.  There is always the runt of the litter with figs in the beginning but they tend to recover the following season.
