I had the Emerald strawberry and Madeira protected inside.  I grow all my figs in pots.  I left my oldest Negronne outside and I don't think I will get any ripe figs from it because it took to long to wake up and I think it suffered root damage.  I have some extra HC and Marseilles vs Black I might put in the ground to see if the survive.  I think I get some protection from being closer to the ocean so that it is 6b.

It's hard to believe but I think I might end up with more Black Maderia than Negronne this year.  The Emerald Strawberry was off the radar but ended up producing a good amount of figs and giving me a chance to see how long I can keep them on the tree to get peek flavor.  The cooler temps are already changing the characteristics of the figs.  The Black Madeira skin seems tougher and a cold fig does not seem as sweet as a fig warmed in the sun.

My recollection is that when I started Ischia Black cuttings in 2010 I had one survive from Encanto Farms and one survive from UCD.  Here are the pictures of those young plants.  In 2011 I don't know what I did but one of the trees grew to six feet and I had my first IB figs that summer.  The flavor was so intense at the eye it was a thick raspberry preserve flavor to me.  Last year the tree did nothing and I had only a couple of figs.  I took some air layers from both for insurance.  Although one grew fast the branches were thin and one broke off from birds sitting on it.  This year they had a lot of figs and put on new growth.  I'll take more pictures of the leaves and remaining figs.  I did lose track of which one was the UCD tree but I've been told the one that looks more infected by FMV is the UCD one.  The eyes are red when the fig is still green.

These figs came from an air layer I did last year.  The mother tree is so far behind that I don't think it's figs will have time to ripen.  I think that leaving it outside last winter with a blue tarp over it protected it but it woke up late and maybe had some root damage because it's growth and figs seem stunted this year.  I had the air layer protected in the greenhouse.

I brought this fig tree out of the rain and I am allowing the figs to dehydrate on the tree.  This fig has a very closed eye that I don't think anything can get into.  It got sweeter and jammy and has a spicy note to it that increased when allowed to dehydrate further.

It could just be random but both cuttings were started the same season but one was from UCD and the other from Encanto farms.  I don't know which is which though.  They are both the same size and in the same size pot with the same soil.

This is the fig that was suppose to be a REI fig but I really don't know what it is.  Last year I had a breba crop and the main crop was to late to ripen.  This year the breba crop dropped and the second crop is ripening.  It is also the only variety I have with this growth habit of branches almost horizontal to the main trunk.   The fig can have a strong berry flavor and an after taste I haven't figured out yet.
Last years figs were dripping fig honey from the eye.  Not this year.

It's really hard to say.  At this stage when they are that ripe they are both great.  The RdB has what I think people are describing as an acidic note on top of the sweetness which is different and I know the Ischia Black can be even better.  I had one a couple of years ago that had the fig honey dripping out and was like raspberry preserve at the eye where it had really dehydrated so maybe the Ischia Black can even stay on the tree longer before I pick the next one.  I like figs soon after turning color too and not when they are very sweet and dehydrated.

Another good thing about RdB is it is earlier than Negronne.  The one I left outside this winter is way behind.  Even the airlayer I did last year and brought inside is further along but still not near ripening.

I thought it smelled like watermelon to me.  The taste is a sweet berry taste but to me has that level I think you get when they add lemon to a recipe because its suppose to intensify the sweetness.  It's almost a tartness after the sweetness is how I would describe it.  Hopefully if I can have six in a row I can figure it out.

I have to say this is the best fig to date.  If you scoop out the pulp and eat the skin separately it has its own sweetness to it.  It brings like a darker caramel sweetness to the part the pulp brings to it, if that makes sense. The more I look at this fig the more I like it.

To date I would say a nice ripe Negronne was better than the RdB so far.  I was expecting it to be a darker red.  I took to takes before cutting it saying I expect a dark red interior.  When it wasn't I edited it out.  I think this tree is three now so it should get better.
