I've had good luck #1 and #2.  I switched to using the stay fresh produce bags.   For me, the bags seem to make the difference.  The ones I use were from the dollar store.  There were about 8 bags in the package (the green  twist tie version works better).

Does anyone have any idea what variety the ebay seller actually had?  I gues I'll be surprised when they finally fruit. 

I bid on some on ebay because they were inexpensive and they were my "practice" cuttings.  They rooted very easily.

24 degrees out at 11:00 p.m.    This is not good. 

What is the critical temperature for young figs?  Does anyone have any idea how much warmer a shed will stay?  (wood frame with wood siding and no insulation and concrete slab).  I'm hoping they stay warm enough to not suffer damage.

That bad thing about Florida when the weather is this cold is that it ruins all your plans for the garden.    We don't usually get a freeze until late January or early February.   Since my tomatoes usually in the height of production when they freeze I decided to outsmart nature this year and planted early.  The plants were all loaded and just really producing.  They are all now dead despite my covering them.  I too have a bucket of green tomatoes to do something with.  Most of my plants were cherry and currant tomatoes and they just weren't worth trying to pick.

Most of my remaining figs fell off the plants last week although the plant up against the house still has some ripening.  The one I picked on Wednesday was cold enough to have come from the fridge but had a good flavor (brown turkey).

I have the Christmas lights on the mango and avocado trees in hopes of keeping them alive.  It is an odd look in the back yard to see glowing quilts in the middle of the yard.  The dog has spent a good part of the evening in the yard barking at them.

This is my first year starting cuttings.  I have started them as I've received them (with mixed results).  My rooting rate seems to be the opposite of how much I paid for the cuttings.   Here in Florida it usually isn't a problem keeping stuff alive for the winter.  But we are having unusual weather so far this year.  I have all my small (growing) figs in the shed right now.  I hope it stays warm enough in there for them. 

We had sleet this afternoon and the thermometer was blow 32 degrees before the sun set.  This is definitely not Florida weather.

They are all still actively growing.  The local ion says news station says we are under a freeze warning but weather.com says 33.  Just to be safe I haules them all in the shed.  I figured I can open the door during the day so they get some light if it is warm enough.  Once this spell of cold is over and I move them outside, they will be finding a new home close to the shed so it will be easier to haul them in and out.

I have a lot of respect for anyone trying to grow them up north.  I can't imagine moving large numbers in and out.    Hopefully my tomatoes survive the night.  It was dark as I was trying to cover them.  They always seem to freeze when they are loaded with tomatoes.

I have a bunch of small figs, some of which were rooted this fall.    I have them outside in the back yard.  At what temperature do I need to bring them inside?  We are expected to go down to 32 degrees tonight and I don't want to loose them.

I have a latarulla that I got from ebay from ejp3.  It was a good size plant and quite healthy.  Even though the post office smashed the box and it had some leaf damage, it has flourished.  It has doubled in size in about 5 weeks and now has figs on it.

I moved to Bartow 11 years ago from south Florida and lived there until 2 years ago when I moved 5 miles up the road to Lakeland.  I have a bunch of cuttings rooting - way more than I'll ever be able to use.  If I manage to get them to root, I am willing to share with any of your family in the area.

The cuttings I received looked healthy.  He ended up shipping 13 and not the 12 that were listed.  I was willing to gamble a little since they were relatively inexpensive.  I guess I'll find out what they are in the next year or so (assuming they root).

I have a laturulla from ejp3 and it is certainly a vigorous grower here in Florida.  It has double in size since I got it in late September.  It has a bunch of tiny figs on it.  We'll see if they ever ripen. 

We have been having record high temps this year.  Last week we had one day in the 90's.  That may be causing the growth.  I have no real way of forcing dormancy so I'm going to have to watch them carefully this winter.

I unpotted my yellow marseilles that I recently got (from the same source) and washed off the roots.  Luckily, I cannot find anything that indicated rkn on mine, so unless it is just beginning I think mine is clear.  I will check it again carefully in the spring when it goes into a bigger pot.

Our Lowe's here in central Florida had brown turkey and magnolia.  They were from a Florida nursery.  I am guessing that other states have figa from growers in their general area.  The plants were a nice size and inexpensive so I bought two and planted them in the ground as an experiment.  So far the brown turkeys have all split because of the rain.  But there are plenty more to ripen.  My magnolias have not yet started to ripen.

I got 3 plants from him a few weeks ago.  They were bare root.  I checked the roots  before potting them and they seemed clear.

I like turkey sandwiches with cranberry sauce on them.  It would probably be good with fig preserves instead.  Unofrtunately I finished my fig preserves earlier this year.

Turkey is not an issue around here.  We went to my mother in law's house for dinner.  Since it isn't Thanksgiving without leftover turkey, I cooked a one for home/leftovers.  The selection was limited at the grocery store so I ended up with a 24 pounder.  We are going to be eating it forever.

The black nursery pots are not a good idea in Florida.  They tend to get too hot and cook the roots.  Our local Lowe's just put a good portion of their pots on clearance.  I got 16" and 20" pots for a reasonable price.  I stocked up, even though I won't be repotting until spring.

So far I've just used a paring knife to poke holes in the cups (16oz clear cups from Walmart).  It's not pretty but it works.  Is there a reaon to use something that creates even holes?

I get very large yields from my earthboxes.  I thought that they were exaggerating the yield until I actually tried them.  This year I have part planted in the earthboxes and half in compost.  The compost bags, so far, have an equal yield to the earthboxes.  I take a 40lb bag of compost, post holes in the bottom and plant 2 plants in each bag and then use miracle grow on them.

For what its worth, I got the cuttings I won on ebay.  Shipping was slower than they advertised.  When the cuttings arrived they got left in the mailbox for the afternoon on a 100 degree day.  When I opened the package, it looked like they were already sprouting.  So far two have clearly rooted and leafed out and the third, while rooted, has no leaves.  I guess I will find out in the next few years if I got the correct varieties.  If not, I won't be too upset since the cuttings were fairly inexpensive and I bid on them thinking they were good learning cuttings.

Mine are doing the same.  I have mine potted in a mixture of sphnagnum and vermiculite.  I am going to wait and see what happens wth them.

There are no leaves on the plant.  It had one shriveled looking fig on it that I pulled off.  When I flipped the tag over, it did say negronne (which he lists a synonym for violette de bordeaux).  It was so faded that I never would have noticed it had  Bass not told mentioned that  labels were reused.

It looks like I have the correct variety.  Thanks for the help.

I received my figs from Mr. James Robins earlier this week.  They are nice sized plants, but one was supposed to be violette de bordeaux and is tagged early violet.  Does anyone know if it is the same variety?  I looked on the varieties page and it looks like it may be a different fig.  I wanted to know so I can still be watching to get the correct variety. 

If it is a different fig, does anyone have it and how is the flavor?

I just received a new fig in the mail today.  It was mailed bare root and dormant.   Do I pot it and put it outside, or is there something else I should do with it.  Last year my 2 figs never seemed to go dormant even though we had numerous freezes (the longest cold snap was about 5-6 days with freezing temperatures most of those nights).  I can bring it indoors on prospective freeze nights if needed.

Thanks for the information.   The cuttings arrived this week and ordinarily I would just try to get them rooted but I am out of town next week and my husband is not reliable enough to watch the cuttings.  If I am lucky he will manage to water the tomatoes while I am gone.  He is happy with just grass (and not even nice grass) in the yard.

I wasn't sure once they went into the fridge, if they had to stay there for a certain length of time and didn't want to chance then not surviving.   I don't think I will need a warming tray since we are still going into the 90's during the day and not getting all that cool at night.

What is the minimum amount of time they need to stay in the fridge before rooting?  We have a minimal dormant period and would like to know when I can try to root them.  I would go ahead and try to start them now (they arrived in the mail today), but I am out of town next week and cannot watch them.

It was sad to lose all the producing trees.  Of course that was the year every last one had a bumper crop.  When they chopped them down, all we got was a $100 gift card to Walmart that was only usable in the garden department for non citrus trees.  Between my grandmother's yard and ours we lost about 8 trees.  

Now I've managed to be in the citrus canker area, so I fully expect them to decide to take my new trees.

Welcome to the forum.  I too lurked for a while before joining the forum.  It is amazing how addicting figs can be.  I started this spring with my 2 Brown Turkey plants from last summer.  I am now up to around 20 with 3 more still to arrive from James Robin.  It will be fun to see what plants do well here in the Florida heat and humidity.  So far mu husband has not seemed to notice that the figs are expanding in number, but if I keep going he is sure to notice.

The fig season in Florida seems so different from everyone up north.  My plants are now staring to produce in full force - at least they are now staring to ripen (and have a fairly good crop).

My gardening love began with the orange tree seedling I purchased (at a yard sale) at the age of 6.  12 years later it finally fruited and was one of the best orange/tangerines I have ever had ( at least until the citrus police in Broward chopped them all down in our neighborhood).

If I had to guess I would say that they are definitely 2 different varieties since they had different flavors and had different color interiors.  Also, on the plant, one had red eyes on the immature figs and the other is completely green until they begin to ripen.

What is odd is that black mission is not supposed to do well in Florida and these are flourishing.  They are loaded with figs.  I am assuming that the figs are late this year since they were started this year.

I purchased two fig trees in early summer- one a black mission and one a Celeste.  Foolishly I didn't label the pots thinking that I would remember which was which.

I have had the first fig from each.

I think the first few pictures are the Celeste, although the interior does not look like the pictures I have seen.  I don't think the last pictures are a mission.  The fig was bright red and the interior was yellow.  Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of it cut, but it was very sweet.  Does anyone have any suggestions what it could be?

It is hard to pass up a nice looking plant even if you don't know what they are.  I have my Walmart figs.  They were big plants in 3 gallon pots for $12 and were only labeled "pink", "black" and "large".   When I called the nursery they couldn't tell me varieties.  We'll see what they taste like next year since  I picked the best looking plants which ended up being the ones without fruit.

Right about now the cold front is welcome.  We have been setting records for high temperatures in the Tampa Bay area.  Our version of the cold front calls for 71 degrees as the high on Sunday.

I still have figs forming on my plants.  Do I need to be pulling them off?   There is also a lot of new growth starting.   Should I be trying to slow their growth and if so how do I do that?  I am in central Florida and we are still in the 90's during the day and the low 80's/high 70's at night.

I ordered the cuttings as well (from ebay).  They sent me an email asking for feedback before I had even received them.  It took them almost a week to get them in the mail. 

However, the cutting were leafing out after a week.  Hopefully they will actually root.

I have three cuttings that I got on ebay.  They arrived Monday and were left in the mailbox all afternoon with weather close to 100 degrees.  One of the cuttings already has leaves coming out on it.  (I am assuming the high temperature caused it to break dormancy or are they not dormant yet?)  Should I pick off the new leaves or will they not hinder the rooting process  They are in pots, outside in an area that gets filtered sun (under the patio table that has a frosted top).  I didn't out a bag over the pot, nor did I use cut soda bottles since we have fairly high humidity.   Should I be doing anything differently?

Do figs have to go into dormancy?  Here in Florida we do get some frosts but rarely for more than a day or two at a time.  Last year was very unusual, we had almost a week of freezing temperatures at night (days were 40's and 50's).  My figs were in pots by the house and never really went dormant.  Should I have moved them into an unprotected area to try to force dormancy?

My brown turkey, celeste and black mission figs are all loaded with figs.  I expect that they should ripen since central Florida usually doesn't get cold until after Thanksgiving.   We are still in the high 90's most days.

 I can't compare anything to last year since that was my 1st year for the brown turkey.  The black mission and celeste were planted this year and have tripled in size.  Each one has between 50 and 100 figs on them.  They are all in pots because of the potential for neamtodes.

Our summer was hot and once it started raining we had a lot.    When it stopped it sometimes went a week in between and I had to water.

I am in zone 9a - Lakeland Florida
