I have often wondered about his self-named variety Adriano. He apparently does not sell outside Canada and I do not recall seeing anyone in the US selling this variety. Does anyone have experience with it here in America? Is it as good as he claims?

Hopefully no one cares that this thread has gone completely off topic...
True Story-
Several years ago I drove 100 miles to get a breeding pair of homing pigeons. These birds are often used to train bird dogs. When you release them they go back to the home coop. I wanted the breeding pair to acclimate their offspring to my coop.
After bringing the pair home- I went to put them in the new coop I had made for them and the male escaped my grasp.
Within 3 hours it was back to where I had bought him from.
Since then I often have thought there was money in breeding and selling escape homing pigeons.

After years of dreaming and planning, I finally built a greenhouse last winter. I also created a mist table. It mists for about 5 seconds every 5 minutes. Cuttings are in a bed of perlite with a heat cable keeping the perlite warm. My cutting success is over 90% like this and the cuttings grow FAST! Bottom heat is just one of the factors here but I believe it to be a significant one.

I use it on all my plants and like it. I have more citrus than figs and that is how I started using it. I would say it is great on citrus. I feel too amateur regarding figs to make comment.

In regards to cloth pots, I tried a few "smart pots" last year.
Summer went fine as I had them on a drip system.
The only fig I lost over winter in my garage was in one of the smart pots- I think it dried out much faster than the figs in plastic pots.
My own stupid oversight- otherwise I would have no reservations about using them.
The more plants I acquire, the more I have to remind myself to keep everything as consistent as possible to avoid mistakes like this.
I have made similar errors by acquiring a new plant with a different soil media. I put it with my other plants, forget about the difference, and eventually kill it by under or overwatering it.

I did not have a good fig crop this year but this variety was the best tasting of what I had.
It was even a young plant. I got mine from Jon as cutting 2/2010 and while I have always preferred dark figs in the past, I am no longer prejudice.

I think most propagators who do in ground cuttings would use a mist or sprinkler on a timer to keep the soil and exposed wood moist.
If I could not do that, I would probably try burying the sticks horizontal under approx an inch of sand/loose soil and watering it once or twice a day. Each cutting would have 2 or 3 nodes. If you are going to rototill, you could then make a 6 inch shallow trench with a hoe. Lay them parallel to each oher in your trench then cover.
Quick and easy I would think.

Varietal Codes

I have had the same question as Nas in the past.
Here is my humble suggestion, Jon.
Create a key on your site to these abbreviations (or within the variety description) as has been mentioned. If it is confidential- list it as such. Then you can stop getting hassled by us newbies about whether or not a certain abbreviation is "confidential."
You have created an incredible site here. I think by providing as much info as possible on these sources will further seal the future of your site as the ultimate fig resource.
Ignore/Disagree with these comments if you wish- I appreciate your work regardless.

Has anyone tried waxing top part of the cutting to avoid desiccation?

I really liked this old thread. Last year I decided to try waxing cuttings and painting cuttings as a way of preventing mold.
I used latex paint at various dilutions.
I also used a candle wax called "glass wax" and a wax used on cheese rounds.
While I had some success, I still do better using moist long-fiber sphagnum moss.
Sorry I did not get this info out prior to the great Encanto cutting release. Likely noone else was fool enough to try these ideas anyway.

Ken-
Are you sure?
I think there are heirloom peach varieties that grow true from seed.
If I am wrong, I have a few seedlings to go throw in the compost pile.
Cathy-
Have you heard of any experience with your variety in Northern climates (zone 5)?

Jon-
I have been grafting for 2 yrs now but never grafted figs.
I did a lot of research before doing my first grafts (mostly citrus) and I have to comment that I never saw better photos. These are exceptional!
I have wondered about fig grafting- does the latex ooze out and cause any problems?

It's all a matter of size. Mulch would normally imply the bark was large size. Unfortunately, the description is not consistent between suppliers.
This year I bought some "pine bark nuggets" that were very fine (all less than 1/4/inch-most around 1/8 inch) despite the fact most people would think a nugget would be bigger.
I cannot tell from the pic for sure but it kind of looks more like fines than what I would call mulch.

I also put in my list.
As a newbie, I am still confused by the source nomenclature. I say
still
because I ordered last year without understanding this.
I understand Jon is busy and will likely answer when he has time in 2 months, but if anyone else cares to explain sooner I would appreciate it.
Example-
If I wanted to order Black Mission there is an option of 6, NL, and Q.
The Black Mission small has a number 1007 and Jon says the 1000s are from the "FN" collection.
I have looked at the variety section sources but still do not get it.

Okay-
I have been an almost daily reader of this forum for over a year but just finally registered 2 months ago.
Now, finally, my first post.
I also have been interested in this method. Jack, I see you are Zone 8. Has anyone further North had luck with this method? If so, how deep do you place the top (bottom) end?
