My cuttings arrived in great shape and well marked. They look happy and healthy.
I've cleaned them and ziplock-bagged them. They are resting comfortably, awaiting for the roots to emerge. :)

Those roots look nice and strong. The bubbles are gone. I wonder where the gas causing bubbles was coming from.

What fertilizers and fertilizing schedule do you recommend for the newborn fig trees in their first year and thereafter? Are there any organic alternatives?

When I looked at all the snow dumping yesterday, I couldn't imagine there was going to be an end to it.
And today, the weather is gorgeous, sun is bright, temperature in the upper 40's. Snow is melting, birds are singing, people dig their driveways and their cars from under the snow, kids snowboarding (schools are still closed)... It almost feels like spring.
Spring will be here before we know it...

WOW! This is neat.
I wonder if you'd get the same effect if you didn't wrap the wire around the plant. Does it really have to do anything with the plant at all?

No, ALL the snow on the planet is dumping here, in NJ. We are buried right now with more snow coming. We are having 2' on top of 2' we still have on the ground from last weekend. Kids are so bored, they actually look forward to going to school tomorrow if they are allowed to, which I doubt.
I'm taking kids out snow shoveling...

Hydroponic growing doesn't sound appealing to me at all.
We all consume chemicals by the shovel-fulls from eating store-bought hydroponic tomatoes, cucumbers, berries, etc, especially off-season.

If we spend our time and energy on gardening, don't we want 100% good and natural stuff for a change?

My vote is for organic growing, using natural nutrients coming from home-made compost and natural solar energy (passive sun warmth that is). :)

I am also at the drawing board, but I'd like to plan ahead, so I can figure out which varieties to plant and how to grow them. "Efficiency" is a key word... :)

From Nelson's pruning diagram you can see that all the fruiting branches grow vertically up and being pruned off after the fruiting season, when the tree goes dormant. Once tree's span size is established and the tree is trained to fit into a 5' space, it can be maintained like that forever.

I am not a big fan of large bushy trees as they take up ton of space. I'd rather have a few dozens of different varieties growing per Japanese system, so I can get the most efficient use of my average-sized backyard and get to try different figs throughout the season. :)

I'm definitely doing this. I'll just have to wait a bit longer, as my trees are still babies with a few green shoots. This will give me time to get materials and build espaliers.

I would not be a problem to freeze the tree to death here in NJ... LOL. But it sets you back a year or two, doesn't it? I'd like to start early and indoors...

I just went back and looked at all your photos of the Japanese system. They are gorgeous, but they all show the finished product (fully trained trees) only. The espalier itself looks like a horizontal bar, I assume.

But how early can you start?
Do you tie young or older branches?
What time of the year do you prune?
How forceful can you get with young branches before they get damaged?
How much of the tree can be removed at one time without killing it?

I'm serious about doing this (an reporting the results, of course). Any practical advice is greatly appreciated.

I've been looking at Jon's photos of heavily pruned fig trees, and wondering...
How hard is it to train trees to this shape? My fig collection is still small and young, which makes me wonder... If I start fig tree pruning and training process early, will I get better shaped trained trees?

The reason this type of pruning looks appealing to me is because (please correct me if I'm wrong):
* Heavier trunks can survive colder winters.
* More trees can fit into smaller space.
* More "exotic" tree format
* Less pressure on the tree to feed unnecessary branches and more energy to grow fruit.

How early can you start? When would you prune? How would you train?
HOW WOULD YOU DO IT? Please share your insight.

Here's a photo of my new baby fig trees. They were branches of someone's grown up trees just 2 month ago. They are my new trees now... Amazing...

Bought ton of ziplock bags and additional clear storage containers...

Jon, ziplock bag and newspaper method works incredibly well. I wouldn't even consider any other method... (Two thumbs up!)

Thanks so much for sharing your insight. I already grow cuttings of both - HC and Violett De Bordeaux. I understand they are both dark figs, smaller in size...

I'm embarrassed to admit, but the only fresh figs I've tasted so far were store-bought figs, packed in containers. And I ate them the wrong way, getting tongue burns... And I still loved the taste of the fresh fig... which I crave right now :).

I also love dried fig, but can't find any good ones in the store. They are kinda whitish, crumbling, moldy, I'm afraid... I'm really looking forward to fresh and dried figs of my own.

Hi, Jason,

I am new to fig growing, just started this winter, and I've been having incredible luck rooting cuttings. I've got some cuttings from "herman2" around Thanksgiving weekend and they are doing very well. They rooted at about 90% success rate. Most already have nice green branches and leaves, looking healthy and happy. (Thank you, Vasile!)

I really have room for about 15 in ground trees and countless pots, but just wanted to know which cultivars everyone prefers.

What fig is your absolute favorite and why?
