Subject: How long to break dormancy? Replies: 7

Hi Rich,

  After growing potted figs and storing close to 40 different fig trees in an unheated garage I have 6 that are still dormant in fact there are two that I have all but written off for dead. This is the first time
that this has happened to this many.Overall we had a mild winter compared to usual tough New England winters,though It was a prolonged winter with the early part of spring be pretty frosty.I don't have an explanation for this but,A fig trees seem to have a life of Its own, maybe these six don't like the neighborhood or there neighbors which include figs and other fruit trees like cherries, and persimmons.
Next season I'm going to wrap them up with old blankets for the winter.

  Your right about the PN she did beautifully in the rain no splits or sour taste,
Do you think we might be lucky enough to get some figs into October here in the northeast,the weather has been so warm and muggy this year.

Hello all,

 Two days of heavy rain here in RI has ruined about 60 figs, they have split and soured or those that didn't tasted watery some even had there skin softened to mush.I picked them to control all the bugs that now are feasting on all the spoilage. Oh well I'm just venting, I know It comes with the territory, I didn't expect this mostly because we've been having the best summer ever.

Hello,

  I've been growing emerald strawberry for 3 years and so far I really enjoy
this fig,when they are dead ripe they are delicious. Its a fast growing tree 
with nice leaf shape. I'm here in RI and keep it in a pot, In my opinion she's
a keeper, she will only get better with age. No visible fmv, she survives winter
in an unattached garage with just a comforter over her.

   Great to see other Rhode Islanders growing figs,As soon as I figure out how to up load pics I will show you my collection.If you ride around the Portuguese Greek and Italian neighborhoods you will see tons of beautiful potted and in-ground trees growing beautifully.

Hey Guys,

 I have a 5 year old potted Votatta who up until last year grew increasingly productive then pretty much put the brakes on, so this spring I felt a root pruning was in order along with some top cut. I now have a small t shaped tree with green growth at tips but 80 percent of the branches are lifeless,I did the scratch test and see green, the question then is could this be frost damage,growth habit,bad pruning or bad fertilization? I use the joe morle recipe and have not had problems with fertilization in the past.Do individual branches just loose vigor and need to be cut back periodically?

thanks guys I guess time will tell,Hey Dominic I been growing my potted trees in 5g swc like yours then they get moved to an 18g swc sort of like bills,I love this method but I find they need to be root pruned after 2 seasons or they come to a halt.But as far as growth is concerned is seems to work the best of all the methods i:e standard pot,air pot,partially buried pot and raised bed although my in grounds are to young to be judged,they still dont grow as good as my swc.At least that is the case for me here in RI and when your collection continues to grow It adds another element and soil types,and material costs and maintenance.Sorry about getting off topic Its just that when ever I see your pics It reminds me of my trees.

Hello,

 Unfortunately this season I had to put my potted fig trees away mid October because I was not going to be around for a three weeks and didn't want to risk them to the roller coaster ride that is New England weather.Half were already leafless and dormant I assume,the other half were mostly brown wood and green leafs with some newer green growth.I guess my question is has any of you container growers ever go thru this and survive with out damage to the tree.The trees are stored in a cold dark unattached garage and have fared well for me the last four years.It has been unusually warm this November with a couple 70 degree days,my trees must be confused, I noticed that the leaves are all drooping as if they are thirsty but soil is moist so I don't want to water them because I would like them to go dormant soon.I would love to hear from you guys and what you think.

I got a lot of discolored leaves after the storm,I was told by an older gardener that there was a lot of saltwater in the storm,I'm guessing that could be the reason for discoloring.

Hello All,

 Hope everyone is safe If your on the east coast.I had to pull up some pots that i have partially buried with roots coming out from the side,the
trees were being whipped around like rope.My question is how much damage have I done to my poor figgies,I felt like the alternative of leaving them would be worse.

Hello,

 Ive been using difference types of sip systems for a few years and the difference is incredible, the only draw back is that the roots grow so rapidly that any pot 10 gal. or smaller the roots become very root bound after 1 season,but other than that i love It and the figs really respond to this method,every fig tree in a sip has figs on it in my collection.

   Hey Will I did some research in the fig forum and noticed bass posted some picks of figs that match our current situation,so I think the only way we will find out is If he would share his experience with us Ive noticed this forum is a bit clicky at times so I think I'm going to have to just hope this abnormality doesn't effect the fruit and share my results at the end of the season.

Hello All,

  Today I noticed lots of the nickel size fruits on my hc and natalina have lots of brown spots and when i rub them a crystal like residue comes off.It has been warm and muggy here in rhode Island the last few weeks.Is this a disease or human error.There both in 18g sub irrigated pots and they are growing so good except for the fruit.If anyone else has gone thru this please share.

Hello All,

 Lately I've been picking any sickly or dried,rusty looking leaves right off.My thinking is why have my trees expanding energy on a dying leaf and instead concentrate on more pressing issues like growth.Am I causing my tree harm by doing so or am I doing the opposite because my tree now has to heel herself.Any reply would be appreciated.

Hey All,

 In early spring I transplanted a 3 year potted celeste in the ground,I made sure that I dug up a nice wide hole and filled with good rich soil and compost, I pretty much just pulled the tree out of the container and plopped it in.I probably should have loosened and possibly bare rooted the tree.Reason Im asking is the tree put on good leaves and many quarter sized fruit but very little in the way of new growth,also Its september and we have had an unbelievable warm and sunny summer and the fruits are all still small,hard and green.Is it shock and adjustment or are the roots bound up and preventing real growth.any help would be appreciated.

 The trees you have seem to be pretty young maybe 2 years old,Do your trees produce a lot of edible fruit?I have a small harem of fig trees much like your pics along your dads garage Im hoping for better results this year,last years weather was cold and wet a good portion of summer.What time of the year do you harvest?Sorry bout all the questions but pics resemble my figs and It gives me hope.

Hello all,

 I am a newer member and love this forum,Its very informative especially to a newbie like myself.I have not posted any questions because the majority of the time If I look around you guys usually answer my question,that being said Im having a problem with mold,I have some rooted cuttings in cups with bottles over them for a green house effect,Ive noticed mold on my cuttings.Im in zone6 RI and leave my cuttings in the front enclosed unheated porch,the temps fluctuate between 50 to 80 degrees on sunny days should I take the bottle off during warm day?Any reply would be greatly appreciated.
