way i used to do it was, if it's first yr tree, i pull them in after night temp dips below 40. if it's older than 1 yr, around 35.

how "green"? green outside but hard? or green and soft? if hard, i treat them like hardwood cutting, good ole baggie method then cup. soft.. i killed every one of them in the past.

i just keep mine by the south facing window in a largd bin with a cover. did that for 4 yrs and success rate wasn't too bad. main problem was the moisture control and what to do once the cuttings have enough roots for 1 gal. i keep my house above 70 in winter so temp wasn't an issue. no fancy lights and things.

i totally forgot about I-258. if i remember it was similar to Black Madeira, but from the leaf shape, at least at my location, they looked different. 

see.. this is how it starts. at first i was set on 5 trees.. and then i keep remembering other trees.. then i was add more and more and end up with more trees that i can handle. i don't know how dennis and john handles all those thousands of trees.. sigh.. 

tho, i might ask you for few cuttings for I-258 later :)

used to root year around. problem during the winter is moisture control. most houses in US at lease is rather dry. if you cover the young plant, they will mold soon. if you leave them out, they will dry and die. so it's balance act on how much to air and how much to keep the cover on. one think i tried was once the root is well established, i would move the young plant to the attached garage next to the wall that takes the sun. i had rather good luck with that. it's mild winter down here.

you need them all.. then you start thinning out the ones you don't like. problem is, everyone has different taste and no one can tell what you would like. if i had to choose one, it would be Paradiso Gene.. amazing fig full of sweet nectar. does well i live and put on enough for me to enjoy through out the summer.. and then there is VdB and RdB. and Niagara Black.. all amazing figs. i like Black Madeira, but not enough heat or something, not good here.

hi coop! hope everything is well. i might ask for some cuttings of Kathleen's Black. i think not many are keeping it since it's hard to put figs on. i'm telling you, pinch it and it will put them on like crazy. it's one of those figs that takes time to mature. but once about 3rd yr of putting on the figs, it will be a nice surprise :)

pinch them. if new branch doesn't give fig, pinch the bud every 5 leaves or so. it will force fig or new branch. there should be list of post regarding pinching.

for whatever reason, i never had a luck with mt. etna verities.. had 'em all and they never did well. might be due to container culture and intense nc heat..

thanks all for the generous offers. this time, i'm going to put the trees in the ground. space is limited, that's why those 5. they were the best tasting to me while i was growing them. they are few others, CdD and so on, but they don't produce as much as 5 i listed. i might hit USDA/UCD to see if they still send out cuttings.

again, i'm grateful for all the offers! thans all!

thank you to all who has been asking about my status. i'm doing better. was in coma twice this year, but pulled through. special thanks goes to ottawan :)

now to business.. i don't have any fig trees any more. while i was sick, they were neglected and they all died. there were some extremely good fig, and rather rare ones, not as rare as some of the members collection, but they are no longer living. 

my fig trees were my pride and joy as some of you might have remembered..

to those i shared cuttings, i would like to ask for favor, providing the cuttings have grown into trees now.

i'm looking cor following.

1. Paradiso Gene
2. Kathleen's Black
3. Niagara Black
4. Ronde de Bordeaux
5. VdB Paradise Nursery

please let me know if the cuttings can be shared. as always, once grown, any cutting will be shared freely.

BM needs looooooooooooong hot summer to show its true taste. i mean loooooooooooooooooooog and hooooooooooooot summer. both of mine, i neglected over winter, died. but down here at 7b.. they were okay. had potential, but didn't hit the mark on 2nd yr baring figs. might give it a shot.. but not going crazy with varieties next time around.

some are just not strong enough to push out the roots. not enough stored energy. some just not in optimal environment for whatever reason even if we give them the best. if they show any sign of life, and root sooner or later.. i count that as a good sign.

strange case of a dead mouse.. it doesn't look like it has been to cat's tummy.. nor a bird. but what will kill the mouse and doesn't live any.. evidence? stroke or heart attack.. maybe aneurysm in brain or heart? need to freeze the body and have it send to local chapter of Illuminati and have it checked out.

tough question.. i used to think that there were "cold climate" figs. then last winter, i left all my container culture out in the open. give 'em water and all.. they all died. the temp wasn't all that bad. even my 15 gal 5 yr old trees died. on the same hand, old trees had sign of fig boring beetles. i'm not sure if there are truly cold climate figs. i would imagine ones in the ground will get cold faster and thew slower.

thanks all, i'm very glad to post here again. as much as i love fig and want to grow them again, fig boring beetle makes me hesitate. maybe after i get rid of all my figs, they are all dead anyway, and clean the area.. in next yr or two, i might give it a shot again. but you can still count on me for weekend drink threads!

sorry i have been MIA for so long. didn't mean to ignore everyone. i had complete melt down last yr around oct. been diagnosed with anxiety disorder and OD on some med and was in coma for 4 days. since then, i haven't even looked at the figs.. and as you might have guessed, they are all dead. 

i know i owe figs to few members, but i'm very embarrassed to say i do not have any live fig trees at this time. i did get USDA/UCD cuttings, but didn't even looked at them till today, and they are molded. 

i also found fig boring beetles on my old trees. 5-6 yr old trees in 15 gal didn't make it either. fortunately blueberries survived, but since i neglected them along with figs, they are not much to look at.

i know i owe people, so please let me know if i can make it up some how.

i won't be coming back as often as i used to, but if you email me, i'll try to get back to you as soon as possible. still on short term disability from work and i rather iffy now days. some days are better than the others.

breakfast of the champions.. i had few figs this morning.. Figo Preto, Black Madeira, and some other that i lost the tags on along with english breakfast tea with bit of milk and artificial sweetener. took some time to tune my fountain pens, and got ready for work. life should be this easy everyday.. lol

RdB sems to be an early figs and season finishes very quick of it, in my front yard. JH Adriatic ripens early and keeps on going..

same thing happened to my Black Madeira about a week ago. now i water it more regularly and they are much better. i think letting it really ripen might not work for some figs. then again, picking it early doesn't help either. my Ischia Black USDA/UCD were "green" tasting when i pick them early.

last yr i was grilling out and enjoying some beer, and one of those hairy monster dropped on me.. and went inside of my shirt. i killed it, but in process, they darn thing decided to poke me all over with its hair thingy. i had massive hive all over for good 2 weeks. not fun.

square wheel with some sort of belt system outside or bearings.. that way you can rotate the wheel to one side after certain time without having to take all the wheels off to rotate them.. hmm.. or.. i'm sure it might actually work in places like alaska where something flat might work better than a wheel.. as long as you can hook up some sort of power source.. like dogs.

i think someone said that having a perfect weather, almost any figs will taste great. and of course, kind of care the tree receives. it's possible joe's Paradiso can be a great fig in some places. i know some members will not keep gene's Paradiso due to large eye. but it's does great here. it's has long season, and taste great. i'm sure joe's selling that tree since it does well for him. heard nothing but great things about joe.

depends on the weather and other factors. in 2012, i had 3 crops from VdB, and Paradiso. the season started mid june, and it lasted till sometime in nov.. the weather was perfect, if i know how to keep the breba crop from not dropping off, it might have been longer. this yr, JH Adriatic started.. sometime in june, and it's still holding on to some figs. i think it might be best to have some early figs, mid season, and late ones. that should cover everything. I-258, Figo Preto, and Black Madeira still have figs on that are still ripening.

it was my first fig off that tree. it had few others, and i didn't pay attention to it. birds had earlier ones. the one i had was not tough. too much heat and lack of water seem to cause few of my figs to have tough skin.. BM especially. it was like chewing on a leather.

hey zach, 

i left all my trees on the front of the house, no protection what so ever. i think birds got 50% of my figs. sad thing about the situation is, they don't finish the figs, they just poke at them, and rest is done in by the wasps. problem was as bad as couple of yrs back when i had to stay away from my trees due to number of wasps around it. i learned to clean them out as soon as i see the bird peck mark on the figs.

no pix this time. i didn't expect much so i just ate it. then realized how good it was. truly outstanding fig. maybe next one. the fig looks very much like FP and BM in a way, but leaves look different. color of the fig is slightly different also. and test is also different.

i only had two KB this yr. after the winter root pruning, it didn't put on the figs. same with Paradiso and VdB. but it was really good this yr.

Calvert was amazing. Black Madeira had bit of tough skin. i'm sure it was due to my lack of watering of late.

james, not sure what's with my CdDN. it grows fine, just won't hold on to the figs. BTW, i'm sorry i forgot about your email. Genovese Nero i have is bit different from one Rafed has. but it looks very close this yr. it's more like 3-4 bite fig. too big for one bite. but not sure about needing spoon like adriano said. :)
