The girls look great Frank! I'm still eating preserves from last years tasty figs!

I've been MIA for a while, work and the lady have been taking up my free time. I was just out in the garden today looking at the fig babies and thought of you guys (boy do I have some potting up to do!).

Thought I would  stop in and say hello.

Wow looks great Frank! I don't think it got cold enough to damage the little figs. I still have little guys with leaves on them in pots in the back yard. No burn or anything.. It might be a micro climate thing, but it stayed around 32 here in Killearn and only for an hour or two it seemed...

I just saw this post today. I happened to drive down to the St Marks Lighthouse and took the long way in order to stop by Just Fruits... They didn't have the fig tree I was looking for, but it's always fun to stop in and look around.

Sorry I missed you, would have loved to have met in person.

Looks great Jimmy! This guy needs to get added to my collection..I tried rooting a c couple of cuttings last Spring and had a 100% failure.. the LSU Golds I got at the same time did fine.

I've read the LSU Purple stands up great to RKN, which worries me. They look quite tasty!

I'm feeling a Just Fruits trip itch coming on strong.

Yep, I'm the admin over at  Cigar Smokers, I've been running it since 2004.

Thanks for the tips.

I was just looking at the weather, we might be getting  our first frost this weekend.  Its funny, my in ground Celeste that had the rust, lost all its leaves already. None of the potted guys have dropped many leaves. I guess it's a combination of rust and a micro climate. The mother tree for my in ground Celeste at my parents still has all it's leaves and didn't get much rust.

Looks great Jimmy!  Very tasty.

I got one tree left with figs on it. I needed a nice long fall drive a couple of weeks back, so I took a trip down to see Brandy at Just Fruits. I got an Improved Celeste with 6 or 7 green figs on it still. I went down there for a few Pineapple Guavas for a hedge, and of course walking by the figs in any nursery is simply dangerous... I remember seeing a couple of pictures of your Improved Celeste's and couldn't resist the temptation. We are a couple of weeks past our first frost date now, I hope a couple of them make it.

What do you do with your potted figs? Should I just bring them into the garage if it gets below 32? Or are they fine to leave out?

(This is my first winter with potted little guys).

Man, I thought someone blew my mailbox up! I run a cigar forum and in the cigar world members sometimes "Bomb" each other with packages of cigars. I totally forgot about this, opened my mailbox and didn't recognize the package. I opened the box and it still felt like cigars in a bag.. I opened the bag and was like figs!!!!!

Thanks so much  for the wonderful suprise Marius!

So what about us Southerners? I'm in Zone 8b. Do I even need to worry about protecting them? I was going to just place the little guys under my deck which sits 4 feet off the ground and backs into a north wall and east wall on the side of my house. I just to keep them out of any frost. We generally get a few nights into the 20's and every now and then a night down into the teens, but it generally gets back above 32 during the day.

I didn't really want to put them in the garage, because it can warm up in there on warm days in the winter. Wouldn't that get them to perk up out of dormancy?

JD / FMD: What do you do with your little guys? How about you guys in Southern Texas, or Louisiana?

Interesting that your Kilmartin Celeste has figs. My in-ground Celeste had one flush and was done in June. I wonder if it has to do with yours being in a pot or just a variation in cultivars. I guess mine had a really late flush of 2-4 figs last year in October or November, but they got frost bite in December.

The prices vary. They went from $18-$25 depending on the tree. I wrote down the prices for what I ordered, but they are at the office. I'll post them when I get to my notes.

Looks great Frank! Man that Asian Pear looks tasty! I'm curious about the growing from seed part. I've seen those RARE ANATOLIAN fig tree seeds on ebay and was curious how that would work out. I was under the impression that you would need pollination for seed planted figs. I guess that's a wrong assumption?

I think this is one of the main reason I garden. Nothing compares to the flavor of ripe fruits and veggies right from your back yard. I don't have a very big back yard, but I still have a lot of room to expand and dream of the day when I can eat something out of the garden every day of the year.

JD - my in ground Celeste has this issue as well. The little guys in the pot's do not (with the exception of that Wal-Mart Ischia). I figured it may be the heat in combination with the drought we've had this year, but maybe it is rest. I didn't notice this last year at all.

Welcome to the forum. I'm not too far south, in Tallahassee, FL. My fig collection is small, but growing. This forum helped kick in the "fig virus" as JD likes to call it. A year ago I was just curious about what kind of fig tree we found growing in my parents new house years ago. Now I check out potential fig trees to snag cuttings from as I drive around town or visit new places and consider biding on high rolling fig tree ebay auctions. .

@JD: There is now one Ischia left, along with a couple of Magnolias and one that's not labeled.  I ended up grabbing one of the two that they had this afternoon.

I remembered why I didn't buy one when I saw them the first time. The leaves have many brown spots on them. I'm hoping it's just from the stress of being at the Wal-Mart nursery, but I'm keeping it away from the rest of my figs for the time being just in case.

I'll post pics later.

These passion vines apparently grow wild around these parts. I didn't know what they were until I noticed the flower when FMD pointed this guy out to me the other day.

Next time I'm at Tom Brown Park, I'm going to look for the fruit.  The flowers are pretty intense and hard to miss:

Yum, that looks tasty!  I can't wait till some of my other figs start maturing..  The biggest tree I have is a Celeste and its seasons so far have been pretty short. I would love to have a couple of in ground trees with figs that ripen over several months.

.. I think my fig fever is getting worse.

This was my first attempt at home canning. I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty this turned out. I used FMD’s Alma figs and adapted this recipe from tips in this thread: http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=5396408

800 g chopped figs

800 g sugar

3 Habanero Peppers seeded and finely chopped

Grated fresh Ginger root to taste

Grated Lemon peel to taste

Lemon juice to taste (I used the juice of 1 lemon

½ tsp Pectin

The night before canning, remove steps and coarsely chop your figs. Place them in a large glass bowl. Slightly toss the figs with half the sugar, then cover with the rest. Cover the bowl and let rest at room temperature over night. I had mine out for 20 hours before I was ready to can. You can adjust this recipe simply by following a 1:1 weight ratio between figs and the sugar. 800 grams of figs and 800 grams of sugar made approximately 5 half pint jars.

When you are ready to process the figs, sanitize your jars and prepare a water bath canner.

Place fig/sugar mixture in a pot and bring to a boil. Boil for 15 minutes. Stir often and adjust the heat as necessary.  Watch for boil over’s!

Add the Ginger, Lemon, and Habaneros and reduce heat to low.

After 5 to 10 minutes add the Pectin and reduce temperature to simmer.

Once you get a good consistency, you are ready to can the preserves in your warm, sanitized jars. I boiled mine in a water bath for 20 minutes.

You can use any peppers you like for this recipe or none at all. The Lemon and Ginger alone make a really nice fig preserve! I had some Habaneros ready in the garden so I used those. I was considering trying some Scotch Bonnets in another batch, but decided to do one with out the peppers all together.

Thanks for the tour and the figs FMD! Your orchard is impressive! I'm going to try a variation of the Fig Jam recipe tomorrow. I'm glad I read this thread or I would have totally missed the resting in sugar over night part.

On a side note, if that pain in the tail peach tree I have on the side of my yard doesn’t do well next year, I think it's getting replaced with an Asian Pear. That was one tasty fruit!

Update: I ended up whipping up a Habanero Fig Preserves recipe with tips from posts in this thread.

That is genius! I bet it would work on tomatoes too. For some reason the neighborhood squirrels seem to love the darker tomatoes (can't blame them). I lost 2 Cherokee Purples, most of my Black Cherries, and this morning I came out to a half eaten Carbon. They wont touch the bright red ones - Sweet 100, Matt s Wild Cherry,  Amelia, Better Boy, Bella Rosa - all go by unscathed.

I'll have to start saving these up for next year...

I had a couple of darker ones which seemed to already be pecked at by the birds. They didn't seem to be as dark as the ones in your picture, but I ate them both anyways pecks and all.  Between the birds and the squirrels I'm lucky to get anything. Hopefully as the tree grows there will be plenty to go around.

Nice! Thanks for the confirmation. These were some tasty treats. I wasn't even expecting them yet, I walked by the tree yesterday doing yard work and noticed the darkening fruits and got excited.

It's good to know what this tree is given the family history and the fact that it was the tree that got me into figs to begin with.

I did notice a couple of "late season?" figs on this guy last fall. The frost got them before they did anything though.

When my parents first moved in to their current house in 1990 there was a little 2 foot twig in a dark, shady corner of the yard. One day my Grandfather came over to visit and identified the plant as a fig tree. We moved the fig tree out of the shade to a place where it got more sun and it’s flourished. My dad cuts it back every year to my displeasure.  When I bought my house a couple years back my father gave me a rooted cutting from this tree and we planted it at my new place. It’s been in the ground for 2.5 years now.

Yesterday I got to eat the first figs. Last years small crop got taken by the birds.

I’m leaning towards this being a Celeste. I’m in zone 8b and from what I’ve read Celeste is an early fig around these parts. Thoughts?

It's been a while since I've checked in. This little guy came back strong! I just kept it in the garage mostly and give it some water every now and then - until early March when I took it outside for good. It's been a warm spring here in Tallahassee - that may have contributed to it doing so well.

Growing stuff I can eat has been a fasination of mine since I was a child. It's sort of become an addiction of mine as well. My grandparents had fruit trees all over their house down in Miami when I was growing up. We would visit and they always seemed to have some sort of fresh fruit or Avocado to eat. I think that's where it started.

I just clipped a ripe persian lime off my tree, grabbed a handful of Kentucky Colonel mint out of the garden, and made me a Mojito:

1-2 tbsp agave nectar (simple syrup works too, but I'm lazy)
2 oz of clear rum (I like Don Q Cristal)
Juice of one fresh lime
1 can of Sprite
Couple of springs of fresh mint

I hope my in ground tree gives me some figs this year. This will be its third spring in the ground coming up. I just have to beat the vermine to them as they ripen.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm looking forward to see what this little guy does. I've got a few scion on the way to play with as well, so the next couple of years should be interesting.

I've seen some pretty nice fig specimens around town, I know they grow great around these parts. Not sure what varieties they are, but they get huge and get loaded with fruit. My only concern with the Magnolia is reading that the fruit sours in humid environments.

Along with my newly found fig obsession, I grow container citrus, rabbit eye blueberries, peaches, and have a raised bed where I grow a summer vegitable garden.

I think my next hobby is going to be raising cats, maybe they can fend off the 2 squirrel nests that have recently taken roost in the trees just on the other side of my fence... :-/

Hi, I’m from Tallahassee, Florida and am now the proud owner of my second fig tree. I was walking around the garden section at Lowes today and noticed some Magnolia Fig tree’s in the top rack of the “dying plant sale cart” for $1. I couldn’t resist the temptation to nurse one back to health so I picked up the best looking one I could find and brought it home.

The tops of the two largest branches are sort of withered back a bit. I suspect it’s from frost damage, as it’s dropped into the upper teens here a couple of times recently and I doubt they roll the sale cart inside at night. Should I trim these off now, or wait till it comes out of dormancy in the spring?

I watered it a bit tonight and will move it inside when it’s cold out till spring, anything else I can do to help it come back?

I plan on keeping this one in a container. Reading about this cultivar, it seems that this area is way too humid in the summers for the fruit. I guess we will see what happens.

My other Fig is a 3 year old in-ground tree. It is an unknown variety rooted from a scion of a tree at my parent’s house. It's had a few figs on it. The squirrels loved them.
