The saijo from last winter I bought around the same time and potted up in a 5 gallon bucket and kept inside my home in front of a southern exposure bay window. After a few weeks it started to come out of dormancy and by the end of April I repotted and moved outside. I did bring it into my unheated garage this winter to give it some cold exposure and plan to plant it permanently in the yard in the spring. There are so many different varieties available now and I chose saijo because many say they are great tasting. I plan on doing the same with the three I received yesterday.

Just received 3 bareroot persimmon trees from Womack nursery yesterday. 2 eureka and one saijo for $22 each plus s/h came to $90. Ordered a saijo last year and was very happy with the growth it put on so I decided to order a few more. Can't wait until they fruit! Very reasonable compared to what nurserys around here charge in the spring

I traded with a member from new jersey. I think he said it originated from Italy and he named it Sorbello because that's the name of the family in nj who's yard it came from.

Here's a pic taken this morning of another breba from same tree with more red coloring. Not sure why the first one was completely green.

I had the same problem, sometimes I'm away for a few days and it's a pain getting someone to water for me. I have been using 55 gallon drums cut in half and made into sip containers. Growing results have been amazing and you only have to fill them every few days. Great instruction on how to make can be found on bills figs link on the f4fun homepage.

Not sure maybe main crop will be a different color. First fruits off this tree for me. I have 14 different fig varieties and this was the largest Brebas from any of my trees.

I could have left it on the tree for another day or two but it was beginning to split and I did not want to lose it to the ants or birds. The taste was nothing stpecial, it was spongy and lac king moisture. not surprised the tree is only a year and a half old and in a pot. Looking forward to the main crop, it is a vigourous grower and almost 5 feet tall.

Craigslist.org is a good place to look for these barrels in your local area. Just search for "55 gallon drum"

I use the same drums in black for my self watering containers. They are perfect for there size, price, and durability. I also found its much easier to move them if you make handles on either sides by drilling two holes and using heavy rope with a knot on the inside of the pot.

Those pics are great! Short story long, when I got married and moved into my house 5 years ago I noticed a house down the block in the winter time had an amazing looking bare tree with bright orange fruit hanging from it that resembled mangos (from a distance). It always puzzled me and as I slowly became interested into the gardening scene persimmons intrigued me because they are an almost tropical fruit that ripens in the cold season.(after figs) also you see more and more people growing them in my area. My growing space is limited so I want to make the right variety choice to grow. I am also considering Trying to grow in 25 gallon sip container.

Hello Bill, set them up the same as bill from nj. There's a link to his page on the f4f homepage with step by step instructions how to build. It's fairly easy and not too expensive if you can find the drums cheap. Check on cragslist.org

The drums I purchased are plastic, so I think they should last a long time with no maintenance. I saw the pics of some of your plants in SIP containers, very impresive. It is amazing how fast they put on size. I'm gonna try different potting mix combinations this season.

Had great success with SIP containers last year using bills design but finding inexpensive durable large pots that are adequate for my large trees is not in my budget. The keg buckets are large enough and inexpensive but become weak with exposure to the sun. I recently found on Craigslist 55 gallon drums for sale locally for $15. They never had chemicals inside and were previously used to transport fruit juice. I'm planning on cutting them in half and making 2 sip containers from each barrel. Not bad $7.50 for a 25+ gallon container

I use a 40 watt light bulb in my storage bin for extra warmth. It has worked well for me for a few reasons. Inside the bin I have cuttings rooting in moist spagnum moss in tupperwares and also cutting in a cup half submerged in plain water. There are also newly potted cuttings in 50/50 pro mix perilite mix. I have great success with both methods of rooting and mold is almost never an issue. Since I keep my house relatively cool the extra warmth from the bulb keeps the bin 75 degrees which also increases the humidity. Another big benefit for me is that it keeps everything contained inside the bin so i dont have to hear it from my wife that the figs are taking over the house!

I changed the water about once a week and planted into coarse perilite mixed with vermiculite until rooting really took off. Im sure its not the fastest method of rooting but if I had a really rare or hard to get cutting i would use  it because 100% success and no mold. Worked 100% on desert king, negronne, ras latte, black mission, md berry, genoa white, hardy chicago, sals, sicilian red, dark portugese, italian everbearing, vista, mars vs black, and sorbello red.

HELLO ALL AS A NEWCOMER TO THE FIG WORLD I HAD A GREAT TIME THIS WINTER/SPRING TESTING OUT EVERYONES METHODS. WITH 15 DIFFERENT VARIETIES I TRIED ALL ROOTING METHODS WITH VARIED SUCCESS. OVER ALL THE METHOD WITH 100% SUCCESS WAS IN WATER. I USED A 40 WATT LIGHT BULB INSIDE A STORAGE BIN FOR AN EXTRA HEAT SOURCE TO ADD HUMIDITY. I THEN PLACED VARIOUS CUTTINGS IDENTIFIED BY SHARPIE MARKER 1/3 SUBMERGED IN A 16OZ CUP OF WATER. DIFFERENT CUTTINGS ROOTED AT DIFFERENT RATES, HOWEVER ALL ROOTED PERFECTLY WITH ZERO MOLD ISSUES! I TRIED THE SAME METHOD OUTSIDE THE STORAGE BINS WITH SUCCESS ALSO BUT THE ADDED HUMIDITY OF THE STORAGE BIN WITH THE LIGHT BULB WAS DRASTICALLY MORE EFFECTIVE.

Got some vista cuttings from encanto that were a replacement for desired cuttings that were sold out. They have started rooting and leafing nicely indoors. Just curious if any members in the northeast have had any luck with this variety in ground and if so how they produced? Thanks Chris Long Island

Mk You should maybe try "Maryland Berry" Im trying to root a cutting right now from encanto however it is taking the longest of all my varieties. Ive never tried it but it is supposed to have a berry taste and is cold hardy. Look it up in  the search and youll find more info on it. Good luck

Yeah the leaves all seem to be healthy and happy green and i wrapped tinfoil around the transparent cups to give the roots some darkness.

Yeah good idea, maybe ill drop it down to a 40w bulb and see what kind of heat that generates.

I have a 60w light bulb inside my rooting box. It keeps inside the box a constant 80 degrees. The bulb is not directly touching any of the plants leaves. Could such a high concentration of light in an enclosed area be harmful to the plants? I check them evetyday and they seem ok.  Would hate to screw up after coming this far!

Ok so I am at the point with several of my cutting where I have good root development. I found that the bag & wet newspaper method has been very effective inside my TV cabinet(sealed sliding doors) staying an average of 80 degrees throughout the day.
My question is now i plan to use a clear storage unit to transplant the the cuttings into a growing medium and the interior of my house is only around 65 degrees on average. Will this be sufficient or should I find some way to supply additional heat to the storage box? Also how much sun should the cuttings be exposed to from windows?

Brian, I started cuttings the same way(experimental), but if you take the methods everyone in the forum talks about you will be surpised at your success. Its fun trying anyway! Good luck! Chris

Hello all! I am a new member to the forum and slowly catching the bug that everyone keeps talking about. For five years I have enjoyed my genoa white tree that I bought from belleclare nursery before they closed up.(trunk as thick as a beer can now). I have also been playing around with cuttings from neighbors and friends trees with good success thanks to all the great information provided here by the members. Although my wife often complains I spend way to much time on figs, she takes it all back when the first bunch ripens for the season! Tonight @ 12:01 I will broaden my collection and hope to obtain the following cuttings from jon. I know its a trial and error thing but i'm having good fun doing it.
violette de bordeaux
desert king jn
chicago hardy
marseilles vs bk
sultane
maryland berry
gypsy
rasperry latte
