Subject: When I get leaves before roots Replies: 12
Posted By: buonnatale2u Views: 766

New info for me! I have never fertilized so young before.

Ok, so, I am using the shoe box method (well, I actually use a better bin made by Sterilite that has a much better wider area for the cuttings, and it is less than half the height of the shoe box, and with them being flat, they do not take up as much room and are easily stackable).

So, can you dab with diluted fertilizer as soon as the leaf buds break dormancy, or do you wait until the leave is fully out?

Can you lightly dab the beginning roots also to get the cutting growing?

Or can you dab the cutting itself in only the early callus stage?

I am a huge fan of Dyna-Gro, but not sure what diluted strength would be safe. Anyone familar with Dyna-Gro can suggest a strength ok for the sensitive applications mentioned above?

Thanks!

So, I don't blame you for raising some concerns about the safety of your older or even younger fig plants...just be prepared. I'd put security cameras starting the driveways, parking area and towards the plants so you can see who parked with what vehicle and where they went and come from back to their cars.

Aaron, just curious, since your plants were special and worth so much, and were "stolen property", is it possible that home owner's insurance would cover some of your loss?

PS, after reading a page in the preview, the author mentions how you can add to the flavor of other foods by wrapping it in a fig leaf, then cook, broil, grill, etc. to enhance the food with fig leaf flavor. And if that was not far enough, she said you can choose to eat it! Not saying that this would not taste good because I have never tasted anything wrapped and cooked in a fig leaf before, but if it is anything like the smell of fig leaves, I do not think I would like a food to have a "hint of cat pee" added to it! LOL!

Thanks, that is what I was wondering. I did not want to get it if it was just going to tell me only about the usual fig recipes of melon and figs, and figs and goat cheese, etc, the stuff we already know. Knowing it is has stuff in it that you would never think would work with figs is exactly what I am looking for. I will have to pick this up!

Now that I posted the book here and others seem interested it, I feel I should get some sort of thank you from the author for advertising! LOL (just kidding!)

Ps, Bill, I just got done sending you an email, probably right as your were posting!

BUMP! I am just bumping up this thread that member ascpete was kind enough to provide to me in my screened perlite topic. Thought this topic of Jon's would be of interest to members, especially during this time or the year :)

Subject: Anybody here that screens their perlite? Replies: 33

Thanks for the links to the strainer and the post regarding screened perlite!

I have within the last year, purchased 4 different bulk sized nursery quality perlite, all labelled either coarse or super coarse, and all have still contained a large amount of powder. Actually, the latest bag, I bought a huge 4 cube bag that was a special order from a good nursery around here, labeled as Super Coarse, so I thought I would be getting some good stuff. The bag had more powder in it than any other perlite I ever bought!!

If you do not screen your perlite, please consider it, and pick up those cheap masks from the hardware store. I took me a while to figure out why my mix was staying too wet and it was the perlite. Especially when cupping up cuttings, it really does help to keep the mix unpacked. I now have found a source for Fafard 52 mix, which is the best mix ever right out of the bag for figs and citrus, which finding such a mix is not easy for citrus on the east coast, so I do not have much of an issue anymore as when I was making my own mixes. However, I still like to add a little screened perlite to the mix, depending how young the trees are: younger plants = more perlite to the mix. I have had the best results with the Fafard 52. If you can locate it, it is worth it.HINT, it is not usually a mix that is for sale for the general public, and is mainly made for nurseries to buy in bulk, but if you find a nursery that buys it, they will usually sell it to you.

Yes, I do wear a mask! It is amazing how much dust is in a bag of perlite, and I even buy the coarse stuff!

I have started to screen my perlite after having one year having issues with my soil staying too wet when up-potting my figs and citrus. I currently just use a piece of regular window screen. What do you use to screen? Did you make your own and how? Do you do it wet or dry?

Although I could probably just make something, I was looking for something I could buy to make it a little easier to sift. I ran across this. What do you think? Since I am not familar with screen sizes, I would hope the smallest of the 3 sizes here would be similar to window screen.

Subject: How Did You Loose Your Tree Tag? Replies: 38
Posted By: buonnatale2u Views: 1,105

I lost tags due to the sun bleaching of the black sharpies. I now use the metallic Silver Sharpies to label and tag everything. I have had tags exposed to full sun for over four years with no sun fade! And that is the water based Silver Markers that came out when VHS tapes were still in style and you needed a marker to mark up on a black surface. Sharpie also makes a newer oil-based paint marker now, that you can get in silver and gold. They also have a new pack out of them with a white, black, red, blue and yellow. I just started using them so I do not have the years of use behind them yet, but so far, so good.

When using the silver marker, if you do not like the light color, I trace over it in pencil and if the pencil fades, you still have the silver underneath it.

But I also double label everything. I bought bulk tag markers and write on it double sided, to put on a branch to read at a glance the variety, and I also use a stick label that I stick all the way down into the soil, so nothing can pull it out by accident as if it was stuck up. You can also use the silver marker on the pot itself, but I usually do not do that much since I reuse my 1 gallons when up potting.

On some of my more established larger trees, I will go ahead and use the nice metal plant labels that I then use a P-Touch labeler with the water resistant type P-Touch tape. I still make sure I have a second stick label in the ground for these too, because these metal labels, while pretty, do seem to get caught on things and pull up out of the plant pretty easily.

May seem a little crazy, but I still have a small collection of figs that I need to guess what they are because their labels got sun bleached with black permanent marker.

And then there are the vandals of the world, who have nothing else better to do. I read once, a lady who had all of her tomatoes labelled, only for some jerk kids, not to actually steal the tomato plants, but just removed all of her labels on purpose and mix them up just to be "cool". Another reason why I double label with a label stuck all the way in the ground or soil of the pot.

Ps, not mentioning this because of your issue, but noticed a minor issue of concern with your mix. When doing a 5:1:1 or 4:1:1 mix, you need to add a Tablespoon of dolomite lime per each gallon of mix. You also should add a time released fertilizer to the mix when dealing with established trees.
I once had a fig tree develop weeping type branches after it has started to send out long white shoots too early in my basement (shoots were white from the absence of light). Once I brought it outside and the really long shoots started to harden up, they were very long and weepy looking.

Suzi,

Tangelos are awesome! To start, you must get a Minneola Tangelo (aka Honeybell) tree! I have 2 blood oranges as of now, but I have not gotten fruit off of them yet. Probably my prettiest tree is the variegated Pink Lemon tree. The foliage is so beautifully variegated with green and white, and so is the peel ( like a Panache fig) and the inside of the lemon flesh is pink! Oh, I think I have a pic I will post.

I have ordered serval of my citrus from Four Winds Growers, and they are in CA, I wonder if you are near them? I think they are in Winters,Ca? But I believe they have their trees at nurseries all over Ca. They have the best selection of dwarf citrus trees, which obviously I need because mine are all in pots. Not to sound like an advertisement for them, but maybe you can check them out. They have many high ratings and a vast variety of citrus. If they are not near you, you can probably call them and find out what nurseries near you sell their trees.

You Ca guys are so lucky, not only with your weather but the plants you can just go out and buy and day of the week! I would love to be able to just walk to any nursery and see fig trees and citrus! In Nj, you will be lucky If you saw one Meyer lemon tree at a fancy nursery half way down the state.

Even though I am in NJ, I grow a lot of citrus along with my figs in the greenhouse.

What kind of citrus do you have Suzi? You are so lucky, you can get so many cool citrus in Ca that you cannot even order in NJ. Although, I was lucky and recently scored a Red Finger Lime!!! I want to taste a Fingerlime so badly.

If you are looking for an online source this is a good place with the best prices if you need a good bunch of them. If you can go in with a friend or two and spend the. $200 you get 20% off, 15% off $150, or 10% off $100, plus free shipping over $75! I went in on an order with a fellow forum member from NJ and we made out a great deal on 1 and 3 gallon pots, some of the larger 4 and 5 gallon pots, stick labels, and yellow tag labels we split. It was a great deal buying in bulk. Really the best prices anywhere, trust me, we did A LOT of research, and they had the best pricing online and anywhere locally too. Too bad you are not in NJ, I would of went in on an order with you!

Bass, thank you for your help,

So just to clarify,

There was a 3rd tree (Pan E Vino), however it was also dark? If so, do you think it is the same variety as Pan E Vino Dark, or another similar dark variety? I just want to know if I should call It Pan E Vino Dark, or still keep it as a separate tree as just Pan E Vino since it was a different tree?

Thank you! Christy

ah, the lovely GSP! Well, the GSP is becoming privatized section by section now so cannot blame it all on government workers :)
it is a shame in NJ,most drivers do not care and will pass you by.
A great example of people on the GSP, Instead of "caution, slow down", A yield sign coming onto the Parkway in NJ means"put your foot on the gas as hard as you can, and just hope when you merge in to the oncoming Parkway traffic, the other cars will just jam on their brakes and you will be ok!"

It is good that some good people are still here in NJ to help!

Maybe the Sicilian Dark I have is the Bill's Figs variety then.

I also have one just called Sicilian WM, and am assuming it is a dark fig also at this point, not sure who WM is (maybe a source who wants to remain a secret), so along with my Sicilian Blacks, who knows what will be what with what I have. I am going to have to seriously follow up and take pictures of all of these this year and see how similar each is to each other. That will be an interesting project this year.

Sorry! LOL! I just have so many of these Sicilian types and trying to figure out who is the same and /or similar to each other. At least some good info has come of it. Being sick last year, I lost a lot of figs to premature drop due to under watering having to leave the family in charge of the plants, otherwise, I was really looking forward to a good side by side comparison last season.

I think I have also read that Sicilian Dark is an unknown named by Bass?

I have the same issue with a few cuttings I just received and am just starting them now too. The wood is really green, and they are so light in weight, they almost feel hollow. I usually do not have luck with these type cuttings. I also do not water root fig cuttings due to their hard time adjusting to soil when the time comes, but if it gives me at least some chance of them surviving when it comes to these green hollowish cuttings, I will try it. I know root hormone is said to rot fig cuttings and not to use in general, however, with these green cuttings and not dealing with the average cutting, do you think it would help?

According to F4F, when you look at Sicilian Black, both Sal, and Corleone come up as synonyms, so that is one of my questions, if they are all the same or just related.

And, I also have a Sicilian Black JR, and wanted to know where the JR came from? I know it has to do with someone from the forum.

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me info on some Sicilian varieties of figs I currently have.

1 what is the difference between Sicilian Black and Sicilian Black JR?

2 Is Sicilian Black really Sal's?

3 What is Sicilian Dark and does it have any relation to any above?

4 Sicilian White?

5 And Sicilian WM?

6 And any info on Sicilian Red, and are Sicilian Red and Sicilian Red Bifara the same fig?

Most of these varities I could find little on,, so I thought it would be nice to start a thread where everyone could give a piece of info on any of these varieties and it is all be under one thread. I originally just wanted to know the difference between Sicilian Black and Sicilian Black JR, but then started to look at the other Sicilian varieties I had, and realized I did not know much about them either. Feel free to ask you own questions too!

I have read that when starting cuttings in water, it creates different types of roots that will have trouble adjusting to soil later on. I am sure one of the fig pros can write more about this. I personally would not use water to root fig cuttings.
