I have a Desert King that's probably six years old. I think it has been in the ground for four years. It's eight feet tall, and would be much bigger if I didn't prune it all the time.

Fascinating!

I'm in east Oakland, and am very curious to see if you attract wasps.

Mario

I strongly advise you to reconsider using rat poison. The current formulations kill more than just rats. They kill any of the animals that prey on the live rats or scavenge the dead ones. This has been devastating to raptor populations. Don't let a nibbled fig cause the death of majestic hawks. Or less majestic, but hugely important vultures.

Figs turn up in a lot of still life paintings, but I can't recall ever seeing this many depicted.

If you move, you'll get to experience glorious autumn foliage, and the beauties of spring. Plus, you'll be able to grow fruit that requires long chill hours. And you'll have the opportunity to wear all sorts of fashionable hats and scarves.

How's that?

I have a small urban garden, with what promises to be too many fruit trees. I have more figs than anything else.

But I've only got five fig trees.

Don't kick me out of the group. Someone has to have the least.

I figured that people were responding negatively because this variety is widely grown, and thus not obscure.

Hoping to find an Exotic Rarity in the wild, one would likely be disappointed by Something Common.

But it seems to me that Brown Turkey is common because it both easy to grow and liked well enough to have been grown in the first place.

When they ripen, I'll be pestering you all with identifications of other figs that fell into my hands over the years. I've got a few more Mystery Varieties. This is the first year either of them have produced fruit. Not bad for growing during a multi-year drought.

My approach to garden plant identification is to look for the most common varieties.

A few years ago, my neighbors gave me a sad, spindly, almost-dead fig tree. It had been a gift that they didn't really care for, and it didn't have any identifying tags.

I'm growing this fig in the San Francisco Bay Area. It produces two crops a year. I assume it's a pretty common variety. My guess, based on nothing at all, is that its a Mission fig. I reckon that's the most common fig sold in stores around here.

The fruit needs to be super-ripe before it's ready. When fully ripe, the fruit is very flavorful, with an astonishing flavor of -- among other things -- toasted coconut.

Any thoughts?

Drat! I knew I had spelled it incorrectly.

Sadly, my first fig was insipid. Huge, but really bland. I think it had gotten bruised, rather than actually ripe.
