Subject: Air Layer Removal Disaster Replies: 5
Posted By: tmc2009 Views: 285

One of the Air Layers I removed did not turn out so great.  The Hardy Chicago air layer twisted the roots off after I cut it off.  The weight of the figs and the bend in the branch twisted it around breaking just about all the roots that had formed.  Not to smart.  At least it was not a Black Maderia.

I removed an air layer from this Jolly Tiger a couple of years ago and a shoot sprouted up from the same location so last year I put a cup around it while it was still green and slowly added soil as the wood lignified.  I thought it had enough roots to support it and it would grow faster on its own.

One of my favorite Scifi programs is the Stargate SG-1 series.  I was watching an episode on Amazon and immediately recognized a fig tree in the scene.  It still has the Nursery Tag on it so it must have been in a pot and placed in the scene for interest.  I guess the scene would have been kind of bare so someone decided to put the fig tree in the shot.  Could that be a Black Maderia?

Some of the fig trees I brought into the cellar are breaking dormancy.  I moved the still dormant ones back into the shed.  After a day in the 60's I have to remind myself that it is only March and it still can get below freezing.  Thursday and Friday will have lows in the upper teens and then the temps will rebound again.

It was -9F this morning.  I moved everything into the cellar on Friday.  It was just to cold in the shed and lean to. It took about 3 hours of work but saved me a life time of regret if I hadn't put the effort in.

I would of preferred framing a greenhouse on the foundation using the experience I gained from the lean to I built.  That's probably why I took so long to start building this.  I don't think it would have survived last winter either but we'll see what happens this winter I guess.  I did buy extra clips but also intent to fasten then with the self tapping screws with the rubber grommets for the polycarbonate.

Sorry I did not keep track of when the figlets started to appear.  I gave the tree as much sun as possible and when the figs got large enough but still green I brought it inside because of chipmunks so it got additional heat in the lean-to.

I don't have either of those varieties so I could not compare it to them.  One distinguishing feature is it's growth habit where the branches tend to grow out horizontal and perpendicular to the trunk.  Almost like a natural espalier.  If either of those varieties have this feature maybe it's one of them.  I bought this from Encanto Farms several years ago as a REI.  It does not match the information in the data base for REI but I have been calling it REI since I started it from a cutting.  Searching REI someone did post that they had a Black Spanish that had this growth habit so maybe it is a Black Spanish.

I got rid of my Sal's Corleone. It just did not produce for me.  This young tree probably gave me a dozen figs total.  I don't think they are the same.  My Sal's Corleone never produced figs like this.  The leaves are different too.

It was about one and a half months.  I started it on August 3rd and posted a video on starting those air layers.  Even if you did not make a cut on your air layer I would expect some roots after two months.  I have never had an air layer not produce roots.  Did you keep the soil watered?  I use a mix with a lot of pine bark and water it frequently.

I would keep them in the shade for 2 or 3 days, before bringing them back to the sun.

They would do fine in that container going in to next spring.  It's fall now and not much growing going on.  They are headed for Ebay anyway so I'll probably remove some of the soil for shipping.  I trimmed it so it would at least sit flat but the portion under the cut will probably grow roots too eventually.  With all those roots it did not show any signs of shock.  It was warm today and there was not signs of wilting in the lean to which was pretty warm.  It's different than when you are transitioning newly rooted cuttings.  In that case I would keep it in partial shade for a couple of weeks.  The polycarbonate does cut down on the suns intensity.  Once you have those yellow lignified roots the plant can be removed without stressing the new fig tree.
