Or a couple.<G>But lately you've wandered into "flogging a dead horse"

Mark,

James has used this forum as his primary marketing tool, having done so he is open
to criticism from anyone on the forum. You don't have to buy a ticket.

I have watched this offering morph so many times,it's hard to keep it straight. From
"I'll grow you a plant for less than cutting cost" to "About those plant's?Sorry,I'll have to
air layer them from the cuttings I just grew".......Good luck with that, you'd need bottom heat
at 75 F with 16 hours of artificial lighting.

All of this taking place on the cold, hard,Kansas plains
under plastic. One would have to suspend disbelief not to have serious doubts.

Ajarn has merely made a compilation of James' failed promises and pointed out he's
still selling 2017 future's while he's failed to deliver on the 2016 contracts.Yes,
he's grabbed it by the neck and given it a couple of shakes but nothing that I see is false.

Wills was correct on denying this offering on OF,you only need to read the last
couple of pages in this thread to know why.

You have to view these as a military operation.First, you have your list of objectives.
Secondly, you reconnoiter the tables prior to the exchange starting, identifying the locations
of your desired scion, primary, secondary, and tertiary targets. You return to your seat and
with your sharpie label your tape so there's no dillydallying when the exchange starts. Then
you plot your approach to said scion, perhaps changing seats if a particular scion is in scarce supply.
And you wait, making idle chit chat with one eye on the President of the chapter who will signal the
release of the hounds.

All attempts at humor aside, the grocery bags/baggies are labeled the scion is not.A lot of this stuff
comes off the tree the morning of the exchange. The chances of you being able to talk with the
individual who brought the scion while the plunder is taking place is slim.If you arrive early the chances
are better.Everyone's pretty much available after they've gone around the tables once.Kid's in a candy
store.

Aaron,

Here's a link to the rules,

https://www.crfg.org/2016%20Scion%20Exchanges.html

You'd have to narrow it down to which chapter's exchange you'd
want to visit. They try to space them out,it's not uncommon to try
to attend 3-4 over the course of a month.

http://www.crfg.org/local.html

There's a number of photo's in the link below just to give you an
idea.

It's open to anyone that shows up.If you want scion and are not a CRFG member there's usually
a small fee (under $10.00) that covers all the scion you take at that location for the day.

If that's the Black Mission NL that Jon was distributing it's a very aggressive growth here in SoCa.
It fruited on first year wood but I removed it due to excessive pruning requirements and space
limitations.

If you've let that thing run for the last 6 years I think you'll need something larger than loppers.<G>

Even here,an interior So.Ca.valley,alleged fig heaven,only 50% of the fruit ripens.I've taken
to thinning the existing fruit set in late July and then removing most of the fruit that forms after that.

Preto's a rust magnet,I'm probably going to start spraying them next year.I'm in the process of removing all leaf and putting them to sleep,
I probably pulled 5 gallons of greenish fruit for the worms in the last couple of days.I've left the figs that should ripen on the tree's but the
raccoons usually add injury to insult, all the ripening fruit is out on the tips, their weight breaks the branches.

@Dan,Edgar's been crossing these guy's for many years.I don't think he knows how many
varieties he has back there.I tried 7-8 varieties and took notes for the first four, after that I lost discipline and just gobbled what ever was presented.

Jorge....very pleasant,delicate flavor,much better than store bought.
Edgar....this had the most acid so was bolder in flavor.
Tricia...No acid,very sweet.(named after his daughter,<G>)
Asunda..light and delicate with a dash of cinnamon.

@Ben,beyond amazing. His property is basically a low, triple canopy food forest.More thicket than forest.

@ Calvin and Jerry, thanks for the kind words.Water stressing intensifies the flavor and creates a dense fig.
Some people prefer not to eat the skin or pulp, particularly on well hydrated thick skinned figs.In some of the photo's
you can see how thin the pulp is,effectively an external fruit leather. These are the ones I love to freeze, they come out
of the freezer with good texture and intense flavor.Don't try this with a thin skinned fig, they'll just ferment.

@Sid,quite amazing the growth you get out there. As difficult as these are to root clearly your skill set is a factor.
I've given up and just start air layering them at first flush through June.I'm very interested in seeing the fruit you
pull off those tree's and if they match the size from your initial source.FMV is there,it's just way,way in the background.

@tsparozi,it's generally agreed by those who are growing Preto and BM side by side, equal age and conditions they are the
same.A distinction without a difference. The degree of FMV load present can mask that.

@jaime,I don't know what to tell you.As you've noted the leaf pattern is completely different. My BM and Preto are mostly spade and tri.

Glad to hear the Preto's doing well for you Sas.If you can manage it try to let a couple dry down on the tree,
the exterior will harden up giving you the crunch of a fruit leather while the interior will have a creamy berry
taste.

Any plant that's spent over a year in it's container need's to be watered once a day this time of year.Pouring gallons of water once a week into a root bound plant doesn't work, better a gallon a day.I've several that are looking similar, should have root pruned them early this year.Try placing the pots in a tray with 1" of standing water.

If you're not root bound your feeder roots are probably well outside the pots circumference, are you watering the pot only? You might want to think about
irrigating 12"-18" away from the outside of the pot.

Most of the bark you're going to find in Ca. is going to be fir.It works fine.
Home Depot has Earthgro,2 cu. ft Groundcover bark, item 88352185,stay away from

The best stuff I've found is the small "Orchid Bark" from Crop Production Services,

A photo would help.Size matters in terms of how to handle these.

Absent that, assess root to top growth.
Remove excess top growth/leaf while still associated with tree.
Let it callus and then remove from tree.
If possible place it in a humidity bin for 3-5 days.
Shade and misting as required gradually moving into dappled light.

@ Simon,
Although you hung the layer 10 weeks ago the clock only starts ticking once it
begins to leaf out.The leaf is providing the rooting energy. For large layers I usually allow
8-10 weeks after first flush. Here's one I placed on 3rd or 4th year wood mid March.
That's a #5 and I expect the pot to be full mid/late May.

P1010013 (1).JPG
@Meg,
I think you're in SoCa. so you can remove it now.The embryo's should not tax the layer and it should be solid in a #1 within 30 days.By the time the figs become an issue it should be comfortably settling into a #5.You want the layer off the tree and settled in as early in the season as you can.

The tree's going to want to go vertical so you'll probably want to remove a foot or so of the apical growth.
It'll push water sprouts, you can select which ones you want as new scaffolds and prune out the rest.Once
the water sprouts you've selected get some girth but are still flexible bend them more horizontal and regrow the
lower scaffolds.Good Luck.
