I live in the northeast and have a Desert King that is several years old and I get a nice crop of brebas each season. The tree is getting leggy; can I prune it after the figs ripen with the hope that it will still put on additional growth for next years early crop?

I don't think the foam is thick enough, I had stuff inside an igloo cooler in a detached garage freeze solid last winter....anyway, if the plants are that small, why not just grow them on a sunny windowsill this winter....they will get additional months of growing and really won't produce a crop next year anyway...just a thought.....I do it with all my small trees

I use a 16'x16' bird netting.....just drape it over the top of the tree and gather it around the base or the trunk....sometimes I bungee the bottom around the trunk.....you can't hurt a fig tree with a little bit of netting!.....works great for catbirds on dark figs

bill's covers are black and so are mine, figs have no problem with heat, just suck up a lot of water....I use black plastic bags or a roll for the garden rows. its gets pretty hot here in west nj!

I have a 2 year old tree from a cutting I rooted over the winter of '11-'12. first year in a pot sunk into the garden, 53" tall and 9 figs that didn't ripen. next year, repotted to larger size and buried in the garden again, had 1/3 die back (wintered in unheated detached garage) with moderate growth this summer but no figs. will keep this year and see what happens...joel

I grow most of my figs in containers. either home depot or tractor supply has 17 gal. buckets that work just fine, oldest ones (6 yrs) are still in use, no problems with uv damage. still they get pretty heavy and a hand truck does the trick.

I live nearby and would welcome you visiting me and my collection; will have some trees available at the end of the season. it would be nice for those of us located close by to get together and visit each other. i took a county education class given by bill a few years ago about figs and his self watering pots. i made my own, similar to his and everything in those pots does BETTER! i use a dripworks irrigation system for watering during the summer. don't worry, when the plants fully leaf out and the temps stay warm, those figs will suck those pots dry every day. that usually happens here in west new jersey in june. if i had to choose between a swc or just a normal pot sunk in the garden....self watering every time...joel
