I never thought of that. I guess I'll do some more research. Have you seen black missions this color?

Ok..I took some more photos. Now you can see the leaves, and the size of the fig.
What do you guys think?

I'll take a photo of the tree when I get home from work! Originally Home Depot sold it to me as a Black Mission. LOL!

I've been looking at a lot of fig photos today and you're both right about it not being a golden celeste, but I'm leaning towards the LSU IC.

Or maybe this is an LSU Improved Celeste! LSU Purple? What do I have?

Can you guys tell me if this is a LSU Golden Celeste, or a different LSU variety? Thank you!

Last year my tree produced 130lbs of figs. This year.. there is really nothing on the tree at all. We have had heavy rain all of July, and I'm guessing this explains why the rust is already here. Now for the first time I'm going to trim off the top of the tree. When is the best time to trim? Has anyone else in the southern part of Georgia, or Florida experienced a bad season?

Excellent advice! Thank You! So for now I sit tight, enjoy my season, and then when winter comes I'm going to do some major reshaping. When cutting the tree back is there a specific way I need to do that?
Should you pay any careful attention to the cuts? Like.. do I need to coat the cuts with anything?

So basically... take off the top? When should I do this? Centurion mentioned getting some fish emulsion for fertilizer. What do you use? Do you think I should do that now as well as in the spring?

Yes theman! That's me! It's been a while since I've done any fig chatting so it's nice to be recognized! The trimming scares me, but now that I see it's what it probably needs I guess this will have to happen this winter.
How much does one trim on a tree like this? How much fruit will I loose?

Ok then... I'll give it some extra love and see what happens. Like I said..this tree is enormous and I've never had to do this before, but you're right, it's worth it!
Thanks you guys! I'll let you know if it helps :o)

It would be very expensive to water and fertilize this tree. It's taller than my house and about 30ft wide. I've never had to do that before, and it's usually full by now. The pruning you mentioned definitely has come to mind. I think that would help for sure. Of course I can't do that until it goes dormant, so I guess that's going to have to wait. Even the very top of the tree is lacking figs. I live in Savannah, Ga. This is a Celeste fig tree.

Would anybody have any idea why my 80 year old giant fig tree is not up to speed with the rest of the fig trees in the neighborhood? Normally around this time it's just as full. I see figs here and there, but even those are really tiny.

Hey you guys! Can any of you help me determine what kind of fig this might be? I've attached a photo. I live in Savannah, Ga. I tried to determine what it might be on my own, but I'm having a hard time. Maybe some variety of brown fig??

Thanks Martin. That makes me feel better. I saw my mom's tree yesterday, and it wasn't experiencing any rust. It made me curious as to why mine, but not hers.

I have also read this: No fungicides are specifically labeled to control this disease on fig. Fortunately, fungicidal control usually is not necessary.

But still..why my tree?

I don't know why this is happening to my baby tree. It happens to the giant tree in the back too. Once my season is over...this happens. Does anyone know why a tree gets Fig rust? Or How I can help it? Thank you! Photos Attached.

Suzi..my mom mentioned your mask idea to me once. I love that idea too, but what to use? My mom also mentioned maybe rubbing some kind of oil all over my skin as a type of barrier. I tend to take all the layer of clothes off, jump into my outdoor tub and wash with soap. I would like to think this helps a little by washing off as soon as possible.

I found out that the correct term for this allergy is "ficin dermatitis".

I like the longer glove idea. I would like to find longer gloves, but thin. I need to be able to feel the fig. Just so you guys know. I wear a long sleeved tissue t-shirt, long cotton pants, and gloves. Most of my fig season is in 100 degree weather. Sometimes you just want to skip all the clothing. I know. I should know better.

I see there is an oil too. It does mention that fresh leaves probably work the best.

Plantain huh?! Excellent! I've never heard that one before. It takes a while for the itch to subside, and then it's followed by an actual scar. I wear gloves, and protective clothing, but sometimes I just run up into the tree without my protective clothing telling myself I'm going to just do a "quick pick" and be done. That of course never happens and I pay the price. I pulled 130lbs of figs this year. Best year yet. For the amount of rash I've gotten... I guess it's not too bad. I will definitely look into the Plantain! Thankfully for my skin the season is over.

Has anyone else experienced this from hours of picking? This happens to me if the sap gets on me, or even if I'm scratched from a branch. It's SO itchy! I'm trying to find out what will help. I attached some photos. It totally resembles poison ivy.

Phytophotodermatitis
(also known as "Berloque dermatitis"[1]:32) is a chemical reaction which makes skin hypersensitive to ultraviolet light. It is frequently mistaken for hereditary conditions such as atopic dermatitis or chemical burns, but it is caused by contact with the photosensitizing compounds found naturally in some plants and vegetables like parsnips, citrus fruits, and more.[2]

Thank you for all the responses! I'm going to keep the LSU Golden Celeste. I think it's a tasty fig. I've only had it for 4 months and there are figs all over it. I would feel bad returning it. At least now I know what to look for when I buy my next fig tree.

It really is super sweet. I'm bummed it's not a Black Mission, but at the same time it's been fun trying to figure out what I have. I didn't think fig trees needed to pollinate. Would this baby tree have a bunch of fruit on it from the giant Celeste I have in the backyard??
Btw.. thanks for the positive spin Suzi!

Is it because it's a young tree? How long does it take to turn black? It feels ready to pick, but not the right color.

I was just told that it could just be from old age, and that once my season is over. I should trim it 8-10ft. I was also told that the tree might just be too high.

Ok..so what I should tell my friend is that they should probably move the trees. My friend told me the trees get morning sun, and by the afternoon it's shady in that spot. So Dieseler... does it sound like these two young trees just need more sun?
From what I've heard it doesn't sound like there have been any dead leaves.
He would have mentioned that. He's been fertilizing and watering, basically taking
really good care of both of them. So maybe it's just the sun. What do you think??

Hmmm.... over fertilize. Interesting. Why do they become stunted? Any idea? Even after it's been 2-3 years?? Northeast..I should have mentioned that the two trees are already in the ground. Both trees get morning light, and afternoon shade. Both trees have been well fertilized.

Here is the situation: I was asked a question last night from a friend that has two baby celeste trees. Neither tree has produced any fruit. One tree is about 3 years old, and the other is two. My friend says that not only are they not producing fruit, but not growing any taller either! It seems like he's done everything correct when it came to planting..so any ideas on why this is happening?
