Check out the Dave Wilson Nursery channel on YouTube. California based and excellent information on high density planting. I think that's the way to go but it involves lots of heavy winter pruning, if you're up for it :-). They are doing it with everything from avocado to olives commercially now in CA and it significantly improves production per square foot.

Good luck

More positive fig sharing!

2016 season Black Marseilles AKA Marseilles VS Black AKA MVSB

Nice fig. Definitely worth having but not my favorite. I'm told it performs really well compared to other figs back East and in areas with summer rain. I'm sure it's in many people's top 5 list out there.

Let's get your thoughts on this East coasters!

Here's more positive fig information/ picture sharing for the fig loving community.

Penachee aka Penache aka various other spellings is by far the best non dark fig in my opinion and the most beautiful of any fig. Heard it doesn't like summer rain but in hot dry summer areas like California it's amazing. Now a commercial variety in California along with black Mission, you may have seen it at the grocery stores under "Tiger Figs" label. Very very vigorous and late season.

How has it performed for you?

The pictures were from the 2016 season, not January 2017 :-)

Yes, Brown Plate is different from Black Plate, it is a brown fig.  I posted pictures of it previously if I remember correctly.  No Dry On The Tree Green, sorry.

How is Black Plate treating you?  Any figs yet?

Just wanted to get the forum back on track with some actual pictures of figs and sharing information about different varieties.

This is a Hungarian variety named Brown Plate. Nice looking fig, great taste, vigorous (grew 6 feet this year), mid to late season, and apparently cold hardy like most Hungarian varieties. I can't say for sure in San Diego but it definitely drops leaves later than all other non Hungarian varieties. I will have cuttings as soon as all the leaves drop.

There are more pictures below in a follow up post

Early fertilizing will stimulate early growth which is a good or bad thing depending on your location. Late January in San Diego after heavy pruning. I'd recommend much later for colder locations.

My experience is the taste is not great but everyone has their own opinion so grow it if you like it! It is a beautiful tree however, very nice trunk and leaves. Definitely not something that will grow in freezing conditions.

Too strict in CA. As Harvey said the state has too much to lose if something bad comes around through the mail. Please don't but if you do label what it is clearly so the mailman or inspector can see clearly

Glad to see that your tree is already successful Drew! If I remember correctly I sent the cuttings out last winter so it's a one year tree, right? That's a great looking first year fig.

Hungarian variety, rare in the USA.  I prefer black figs but this one is a real beauty. Very vigorous and productive.  The taste was great as well!  See pictures.

I will have cuttings this winter if interested.  I'm looking forward to sharing this one with the fig community.

Now some interior shots-

Needless to say, this fig is a real winner!  The tree is very productive and healthy, and has delicious fruit reminiscent of Black Madeira/ Figo Preto but definitely different and amazing.  It also regularly ripens fruit in a very mild coastal climate that rarely exceeds 85 degrees F.

I hope to go back and get cuttings in December or January. I'm looking forward to seeing how this variety performs in other areas!

Now for some fig pics-  As you can see, very similar shape to Black Madeira and Figo Preto but the fig is definitely larger.  I wish I had taken side by side pics, as I have all three varieties, but I forgot.  Fig honey dripping!

This is an update about a fig tree I found after years of looking.  The original thread is here-

I had the pleasure to stop by the original Craven's Craving tree recently and snapped some pictures of this variety for your viewing pleasure.

1FullSizeRender.jpg  as you can see its a nice mature tree.

Here's a picture of the leaf shape with some figs in the background-
FullSizeRender[4].jpg  I didn't see any signs of FMV, which is great!

Hey all, I just saw the new posts on this thread.  Great to see that some of you are having success with this great variety!  It's really exciting to see how it works in other climates.

I'll be stopping by the mother tree in a soon and will try to post pics if I get them.  I'll ask the owner what part of Portugal he's from as well if I see him.

Subject: Negronne or RDB? Replies: 14
Posted By: padsfan Views: 469

Since they are both excellent figs, I would recommend RDB if you want an earlier season fig and Negronne if you want mid season fig.  Once you have large fig trees- and they do get large- this is a very underestimated consideration if you have multiple varieties.

It's about eating good figs and sharing them with the people you care about, not collecting figs or propagating figs as some kind of investment.

Enjoy!

Subject: Figs that are NOT cold hardy at all? Replies: 7
Posted By: padsfan Views: 238

You should also consider that ALL thin branches and young, small trees will not be as hardy as large diameter trunks of older trees.  Soft branches that haven't hardened off will also be susceptible to frost/freeze.  That's regardless of variety.

I wouldn't worry too much from what you are saying about your location but better safe than sorry.

For online ordering I would recommend Trees of Antiquity.  Penache is an excellent tree for your area but very vigorous and a large tree.  If you want multiple trees, I would recommend an earlier variety, mid season variety and late variety.  I think this is more important than tree size, which can be controlled by pruning.  I took 8 feet off my Black Mission and King figs this winter and pruned to ankle size.  They are growing back nicely now.

Keep them in pots to restrict growth or prune heavily every winter for height control

A way to stimulate dormant periods is to keep the fig tree potted and don't water it until it looses its leaves (this will be much more effective than putting ice on the roots, which could kill the plant).  You can resume watering after the leaves drop so the tree doesn't die.  I do this with my Pakistan mulberry tree in a 15 gallon pot and get 2, sometimes 3 fruiting seasons on it each spring to fall when I should just get one fruiting season.

Keeping figs in pots and elevated above the ground on a brick or something in a rainy, tropical location will also reduce the risk of them getting too much moisture and not sweetening up as much as possible.

If possible you could always bend it at a 90 degree angle to try and force the lower buds to grow.  This may take several weeks of gradually increasing the bend.

You could also air layer that top branch and start over.

Very nice Frank, I'm always impressed with the ingenuity on this site!  I'm sure it will be worth all your hard work!

My fig "setup" is basically a bunch of in ground and potted figs outside LOL.

My guess-  root rot or nutrient deficiency, possibly a combination, with nematodes added in for fun.  Fertilize and re-plant on a mound.  I know you get a lot of rainfall in LA.

Good luck.

Last year was extra warm in San Diego and my established fig trees really took off.  Desert King and Black Mission NL in particular grew about 8 feet in one year.  Let's just say I enjoyed a lot of figs last year!  I decided to cut the fig trees back to a few nodes.  See picture with pruners for reference.  My Violette de Bordeaux in contrast is my slowest grower.

To turn this into a conversation, what is the greatest one year growth you have experienced with your figs and what variety is most vigorous?  Thanks for sharing!

Seems like a lot of water for fig trees but you may have sandy soil.  I recommend a soil moisture meter if you aren't sure about how much water to give them.  They're around $10 at any box store.
