I was wondering if ANYONE has experience starting cuttings inside the mulch boxes that most of us use.  Seems to me the constant temperature due to decomposition and the humidity would favor the rooting process, and the heat comes from the bottom of the pots being used for rooting.  A digression, but a cheaper alternative than greenhouses.

Welcome David from the fire ravaged area of San Diego (not complaining we grow great figs here).  LSU purple is a great choice.

I was wondering if it gets around the gnat problem, as well as solve the constant heat and humidity questions.  Do not know if it might increase mold issues.

does anyone have experience with mulch box rooting, it seems that decomposition would keep warm environment and wick the moisture to the cuttings in 1 gallon?

We were allowed back in Hidden Hills and Live Oak late yesterday, most of use returned today am.  Here is the damage:

all newly sprouted cuttings are gone, heat and wind did them in since we were downwind (2blocks) from fire.
three developing cuttings from early/mid winter felt the heat and leaves were folded down, intensively rehydrating now (any susggestions?)

All in all lost about 10 little figs.  Any figster help would be appreciated to continue the maddening quest.

House, all neighborhood pets, tall plants, and fruit trees ok.  Around Whitney Rd in Country Club lane area about 4-6 homes burned to the ground, dont know if any figster there.

I live near Harmony Grove, and my area is all under mandatory evac, no one allowed back in.  3 homes lost in Country Club near Kauna Loa, one a great tragedy man losing wife recently to disease, and now this.  Everything out East of San Marcos and West Escondido still burning or smoldering.  Sobering, makes you think about what is important.

Now Harmony Grove and San Marcos are priority one. ONly 5% contained yet...  Last night evacuating road jammed with horse and animal trailers...what could happen in a bigger emergency...though well prepared now and it was orderly overall.

Had to evacuate, I am close to Harmony Grove and did not want to risk it.  Flames 12 feet high, and from 2 pm to about 4 there were no tankers to douse.  Still 0% contained.  We are in a hotel.

if you mean by hugelkultur that you bury logs in the subsurface and then plant above while they turn into mulch over the years, then make sure you do not use toxic sap type logs like in the case of eucalyptus

Fig "of Signura"

Sized  medium-small, delicate flavor and fresh, red-orange flesh is not grainy. Excellent for fresh consumption.
