Perhaps there could be two levels. Free with some photo space and contributing member which offers MORE photo space. Sounds like a win for every one!

Really I did not know that. I think that is why it is important to store them in house. It is generally easier to post them in messages too.

If stored in house old posts do not loose meaning due to the picture being lost on some other site.

I would gladly pay a fee to maintain pictures on this site! This same thing happened on a banana forum. Members were faced with removing pictutes that were linked in posts or having to post them off site. This happened when they quit charging a yearly fee.

If you are just posting a picture of your bountiful harvest or how pretty a fig is then it could go away after awhile but if you are giving a tutorial on how you grew, rooted or grafted it's kinda important for those pics to stick around!

Wouldn't mind having one of those for each fig tree. I'd even raise mice to feed them if they would just keep the squirrels, possums, raccoons and birds away!

I have always been told that transplanting is extremely difficult. I'm assuming they were transplanting dormant trees. My limited experience says different. I have a friend that lives near Marriana FL. He has several named varieties unfortunately the tags have long since vanished. To the point....I visited him two years ago in the Spring and I dug up four trees about three feet tall. They were all root suckers. As we were leaving I spotted a root sucker about twelve feet tall and dug it too. I tried to dig about eighteen inches around the trunk to get a root ball. I ended up bare rooting all of them due to his sandy soil. Threw all of them in the back of my truck with only some garbage bags protecting the roots and drove back to Pensacola. Planted them all in my PawPaw patch the next day. The results....I lost one of the smaller ones. I expected to lose the tall one since I mangled the root ball digging it but it has established itself nicely and even had a few blooms this year. Maybe I just got lucky but i'll take lucky any day!

I have sourced trees from four different sources and geographical areas. I should have good cross pollination. One was successfully grafted with Arkansas #9. I am looking to graft more varieties to some of the other trees. I hope to have fruit in the next two years.

For any of you worried about trying drive all over in a strange place he lives very close and the drive is simple. Just a couple turns and you are there. Leaving his house and getting back on I-10/12 is also very easy. I'm also sure you will be able to follow one of us to his house.

If you already know eveything about LSU figs

AND you already have all the LSU figs,

There is still a great reason to attend.

You'll get to meet all of us who do not have them or even know all of them (official and otherwise).

One fair lady is driving over 11 hours just to come see everything and everyone.

Time to pack up and hit the road

Can anyone else give us updates on their Pawpaw plantings?

Should be some fruit hanging now.

All of my trees are still too young to have fruit although about five trees had blooms this year.

Just a reminder that Dr. Johnson asked everyone to bring ANY (LSU or NOT) ripe figs for others to sample and talk about.

If you have something that is unusual please bring it even if you only have a few. They will be plated and labeled along with the figs they collected for display and sampling. I suppose that if you have an unknown that would be OK and maybe you will get an ID.

The more the better! Hope to see all you there.

That's great Pukzpukz,

Looking forward to meeting you!

The LSU part of the program starts at 0900 and ends at 1200. That's the official program!

The unofficial part is that I will be at McDonalds located at 5464 Essen Lane for breakfast around 0700 - 0715. I will stay there till about 0830 and then drive the few blocks to Burden Field located at 4560 Essen Lane.

After 1200 I will eat lunch at Picadilly located at 5474 Essen Lane which is next door to McDonalds. After lunch Brackishfigger will be showing off Frankenfig. I certainly don't want too miss that. Hope you can make all the activities.

I agree with everyone else

BUT it can be done with risks!

Two weeks ago my Petit Negri had a limb that had established roots in two places. They were both lifted and potted. Both plants were about two feet tall and had a great root system which is the key to sucess. The roots were established all the way around the trunk and were 6" to 9" in lenght with well developed fine hairs. The limb had rooted in well decomposed leaf litter. I removed almost every leaf and today both are doing well. I kept mine in a shady location that is automatically watered four times a day for ten minutes. I potted in Pine Bark Fines. Weather has been low 90's and heat indices in low 100's.

I AM NOT RECOMMENDING THIS ONLY SAYING THAT IT MIGHT BE POSSIBLE UNDER THE RIGHT CIRCUMSTANCES.

If at all possible I'd like to visit with Frankenfigs creator! We need to coordinate all this so everyone has ample time to prepare. I'm sure there is some sort of buffet close to Burden Field. Everyone will need to recharge after three hours "in the field" I promise you that. I know I will as I will have been running since 0300 that morning. Perhaps we could eat, relax and recharge before going to Brackishfiggers.

Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we will have many fresh ripe figs. Two years ago the ripe figs were limited. I am really looking forward to tasting a ripe Hollier to see if that fantastic taste was an anomaly of weather or if it is "one of the best". For the unknowing the Fig Field Day hosted by Dr. Charlie Johnson and the LSU staff is three hours of sensory overload. You get to meet fellow fig lovers, Listen to a short presentation on the fig, Ask questions to experts, see the REAL LSU fig trees (at least the ones left there) and for those willing get together afterwards eat lunch after the event. Some of us will also eat breakfast prior to the meet. Bring your cameras and video recorders there is much that you will want to capture. I hope that all of you will come if at all possible. I drive over four hours one way and would not think of missing it. Hope to see all of you there.

Thanks Chris,

I will in the future expand my varieties but for now I am still trying to put my property (yard and house was flooded just before I had the heard attack) back together. I have nearly recovered. It is horrifying how much Nature will recoup from your property if you give her a year. Of course flooding and 40 hours sub-freezing temps did not help!

Here is my current fig list as best I can remember:

In-ground

1.  LSU Gold

2.  Celeste

3.   Italian Strawberry (realistically an unknown but that is the name given)

4.   Marseille AKA Lemon

5.   Hollier

6.   JH Adriatic

7.   FALSE TX-BA1 (maybe Mary Lane seedless)

8.   O’Rourke

9.   Col de Dam Noir

10.  Heirloom Celeste (can trace back to late 1800’s

11.  Petite Negri

12.  Conadria

13.  Green Ischia

Potted

1.  Black Mission

2.   VDB

3.   RDB

4.   Cajun Gold

5.   Black Bethlehem

6.   Sucrette

7.   Verdal Louge

8.   Vista

9.   Thibodaux

10.   LSU Purple

11.   Celeste (three large in 45 gallon pots)

12.   Petit Negri (lifted rooted limb from in-ground)

13.   New Jersey Red

Rooted cuttings ready to be potted

1.   Vista

2.   Craig’s Green

3.   Emerald Strawberry

4.   Deanna

5.   Lattrula

6.   Yugoslavian Black

7.   Gold Rush

8.    VDB

Air Layers
1.    O’Rourke 2x’s

2.   New Jersey Red

3.   Conadria

4.   Hollier

Grounded limb
1.   O’Rourke

2.   Petit Negri

3.   LSU Gold 2x’s

Thank you everyone,

We have started the recovery process at least in the house. All floorcoverings have been removed and the baseboards cleaned. Do far we seem to have saved the sheetrock but I still have some areas to check. We are ordering the vinyl for the kitchen, baths and entries later today. There is a lingering smell that we can't quite get rid of and I suspect there must be someplace that insulation got wet. I'll have to find that and deal with it. We have chemically cleaned the concrete so it has to be something else. FEMA is now on board and I have made application. I guess I'll know in a week or so what will happen there. Out of all of this the thing that is just irreplaceable is the 6" to 10" of topsoil that I have spent decades building. It simply was washed away. You just can't buy that stuff.

Well I am still in the middle of recovering from a flood. I appreciate all of the kind thoughts and prayers. I will survive and recover. I live no where near a creek or water so no one around has flood insurance. I have lived here since 1966 with no issues until last June when we had a small flood event only in my back yard. This time we had an additional two feet of water and three inches inside the house. This flood was the result of rainfall in Biblical proportions (reportedly 26") and nearby commercial growth with inadequate runoff preparation. Thanks again for everyone's thoughts and prayers. I am on someone else's computer but hope to have mine back up towards the middle of next week.

I have much better luck with large cuttings. They have more stored energy than the smaller ones. I like cuttings around one inch. Dr. Charlie Johnson of LSU recommended this size and after trying it I was really surprised at the vigor they have. From cutting to one gallon pot in less than three months. I potted fifteen and only lost one.

Hollier fig
Sentenced to beheading April 22, 2014

Prisoner is ready!

The head is examined.

The top view.

Mature leaf detail.

Group of young and older leaves.

Neck examination for nodes.

Lower neck examination.

Decision made the cut was made above the tag.

Due to the graphic nature and I only having two hands the actually beheading will not be shown but here is the cleaned up removed head!

And the leaves removed from the head

And finally the naked head!

The head was then separated into three pieces and each piece was partially buried at least two nodes deep leaving nodes above soil level for inspection to determine if this is a ZOMBIE fig that will rise from the dead.

I have no idea what happenned to the last picture and after repeated trys I guess the naked head pic will not appear. Maybe it's a ghost and it won't appear in photos. I guess the Zombie is out then!!!!

It went well and I do have pictures but it may be Thursday before I can down load them and post. I was able to select a spot that had four buds within about two inches or so and beheaded it there. I took the top part and made three cuttings. One totally green with no expectations it will do anything! One with a green top and semi-hard wood. It might make it and the third one was all hardwood. I hope that it makes it.

BUT

an easy system for post rooting care need to be defined. If I was retired I believe that mine would have made it. All of them produced roots and leaves but a four day work weekend prevented me from taking care of they and they dried up.

Keeping the cubes happy is the Achilles Heal of Root Riot. In my case the humidity dome
I was using did not seal well and towards the end I was misting much more frequently. I lost mine due to them drying out. The root growth was quick and great. I will use them again with hopefully a better ending.
