Subject: ficus carica jordan or jordan fig in Vancouver Replies: 2

I just found this fig in a local nursery here in Vancouver.  I dont know if the fruit will ripen in our climate here at PNW.  The color of the fig is dark red/brown so i assume if Negronne isnt dependant in Vancouver than Jordan Fig would be in the same league.

Anyone have any experience with this fig and do u know if it will ripen in PNW.

thank you everyone for their response

Slingha, i have used clear plastic but im too impatient and have to see if their are small roots that have hit the surface of the plastic lol

Maro2bear thanks 4 your link and it suggests that it can take about 6-8 weeks so i guess i'm gonna have to wait until the end of sept.  Will my air layer survive because over here in Vancouver the plants start to go dormat at the beginning of October.

Hello everyone, i have yet to see roots in my air layer and its been exactly 4 weeks.  The branch is growing and developed new leaves since July 29th.  I'm itching to just remove the plastic and inspect but i dont want to kill the air layer.  The tree is a desert king and how much longer do u think i should wait.  Thanks Again

After putting the effort in obtaining that grand of a collection why are you giving them away?  It must be difficult to let them go

only 2 varities -- Vern's brown turkey and Desert King

However i have 3 plants in total with all in pots.  I would get more but i live in Vancouver BC and this isnt the greatest climate for figs.  I'll probably buy a negronne if i locate one.

very true lukeott, in the past i have had success with air layering a brown turkey.
Rookie -- i have tried to add support by tying string around the air layered branch and the stump.

too late dieseler, I'm just hoping the 4 inch worth of removed bark isnt too detrimental.

thank you everyone for your input.  I made the unfortunate mistake of leaving my 3 year old alone with the fig tree in the middle of air layering.  After removing the bark and going upstairs to get string my little one happened to remove about 3 inch worth of bark on a not too large of a branch.  I cant do an air layer on any other branch as this is a young tree.  I've finished the process and am now hoping for a miracle lol  oh well next year

I have plain peat moss and not the long fibered stuff.  Would it be okay to air layer with only peat moss?  Furthermore i'm trying to air layer a younger tree which only has green branches, would it be okay to air layer green branches?  I remember seeing a thread but cant find it with the search function.

Thanks again

The attached files contain the bigger figs.  I live in Vancouver BC and our growing season is really no later than end of September.  Do you guys think these figs have a chance of ripening.  These are from a Vern's Brown Turkey tree.

I live in PNW and my brown turkey has a lot of fruit but most are fairly small.  Should i take off all the smaller fruit and will that help the larger fruit mature and hopefully ripen?  The largest fruit at the moment are about half the size of a regular fruit in size.  BTW, the fig tree is in a large pot.  Thanks

Hello all, my cuttings from the brown turkey that i earlier pruned have swollen buds and i think i see roots in the jar.  I dont even know if they are roots but they are extremely fine and are "swimming" in the jar plus are attached to the cutting.  At what point should i transplant the cutting into a mix?

It looks like another later spring this year as the has been below normal.  Btw, do you remember approximately when the figs came out of dormancy last year?

I'm in Vancouver and we are in Zone 7a i believe and our growing season is basically from mid may to end of september so not very long.  The tallest branch is about 6 ft tall at the moment and what do you mean by tree flush?

Jaimele, i will take a picture at that time.

Thanks

I've repotted it yesterday and did cut it to about 1.5 ft.  I've repotted to a 8 gallon container so when do you think i'll have to repot it to a larger container.  Btw,  I dont know why i did root pruning for a 1 gallon container but at that moment i remembered something i read about taking out the large fat roots of figs.  I only pruned one large root and hopefully the poor thing survives.

Can i propagate the two cuttings i have now in water?  or by just sticking them in miracle grow potting soil and setting them outside be enough. This is vancouver so they will be getting a lot or rain for the next month or so.  Finally does anyone know how long it takes for desert king cuttings to propagate?

Thanks again

Hello all , I'm brand new to figs and i was wondering if i pruned this fig correctly.  I dont want a tree more than 8 ft in height and i think i cut too much on 2 branches.  I've let the other branches as is so that i can get a breba crop.  |What would you all suggest?  Thanks again

Hi Paully, I was reading one of your older posts where you stated that you;ve had reliable ripe figs from Negronne and also vern's brown turkey.  Were those figs in a greenhouse?

Thanks again

The attached file contains a picture of the tree that i just bought.  I may have underestimated its height and it looks more like 4 -5 foot long stick at the moment.  Should i go ahead with chopping it down to 3 ft or wait.  The terminal bud on this stick is starting to leaf out a bit.

Yes i would need to grow the figs in pots.  Do you know of a nursery in the lower mainland which may have one of the varieties you mentioned?

I will not have help of a greenhouse so i would like a fig that wouldnt need one

My brown turkey hasnt given me ripe fruit for the past few years but some of that could be due to my ignorance on figs.  I'm looking for a variety that will be decently productive and provide ripe fruit.  I'm getting a mix response on Negronne as it may not provide ripe fruit in our climate.

You make very valid points!!! Is it okay to prune a young fig tree when it isnt fully dormant?  At the moment the little tree has a bud which is about to break open right at the tip.

I'm thinking of adding another fig tree to my collection.  Which would be a good recommendation aside for the desert king for PNW.

Thanks again

thanks for the quick reply!!!

I've never done this before but will the tree automatically shoot side branches if i cut it now. I am not lying when i say its just a stick shooting 4 ft up in the air. lol  The fig is in a 1 gallon pot at the moment and im going to be transplanting it to a 4 gallon pot.

Hello all,

I'm becoming a little bit of fig nut as i love the large leaves.  I already have a brown turkey fig and just bought a Desert King Fig which is basically a 3-4 ft long stick shooting straight up.  It has no branches at all and is currently starting to come out of dormancy.  My question is on what to do with it?  Should i just let this single stick grow longer or should i cut the top off now to encourage side branches?  I live in Vancouver Canada and am excited about getting the desert king as its supposed to have a ripe breba crop.  The fig will remain in a container.

Btw, the nursery also has a negronne and a lattarulla fig but from the research i've done those varieties are not reliable in our climate.  Are they worth a shot?

Thanks Again
