My turn.

My name is Tim Drag. Also, the admin(timdrag) on fig.yuku.com.  I thought I would chime in to provide you with my perspective and why I leant my technical knowledge to the worthy endeavor that is and will continue to be fig.yuku.com.

I am a newbie. I freely admit it. I jumped into this hobby with both feet and I look forward to increasing my knowledge and understanding. It may surprise you to know that a newbie is intimately involved with the creation of the site. But I want you to see my perspective.
When I joined F4F only 6 months ago, it was a much different space. People tended to respect opinions. People openly shared their figs, thoughts and opinions. People respected eachother and respected our common thread, the fig.  Where we are now is not where this was when I joined.

Allow me first to debunk some of the comments above.  Fig.yuku.com is not a "loyalty" issue. Did you cancel your GW membership when you came over to F4F? I  see many familiar names over there that post on both sites. It's not sacrilege to belong to another site to discuss figs. I for one will still look at this board.
It is not a "respect" thing. How could you not respect Jon and what he is doing here? Jon was one of the first "trusted sellers" on fig.yuku.com and I hope Jon will join to discuss the F4F Foundation and keep us informed about the trees and cuttings he has for sale. Jon is also a member of GW, so we hope he is willing to join fig chat and contribute.
It's not conspicuous timing as has been intimated on this site. There is nothing "in it" for anyone. We have nothing to sell, nothing to gain. The discourse was not a preemptive move in any way shape or form.

Now, here is my perspective.

New Members: New members rock! I think i've been one of the few who has gone out of their way to defend new members on this site. You were all new at some point.  For some reason over the last 6 months the discourteousness shown to new members has been reprehensible. Members have gone so far to call newbies "demanding" and refusing to share their time, expertise, and cuttings with new members.  I may have missed some PM's but i've tried to share what little surplus plant material I have. Are many new members going to "hit and run" sure. But today's new member is tomorrow's "old head".  Their rooting method may become the new norm. Their unknown fig in their backyard may be the best tasting fig on the planet. If you don't encourage new members, you will miss out on a lot. IMHO some of you have forgotten that. I want to encourage new members to contribute and not be shunned.

Respect the Fig!: All of us are "plant people". You kind of have to be since you are on a chat board to talk about figs.  The disrespect shown toward the fig here boggles my mind.  The cultivar of the fig you grow is important.  The etymology of names is important to the cultivation of figs. People on here seem to have forgotten that. How does a name not matter? Why don't I just call everyone "Bill" and "Jane"? Why have people like Condit, O'Rourke, and others spent decades researching and identifying figs? Because names matter. People have become so ambivelant to the naming of figs that if it continues, who knows what strain will be original. Members of late seem to be just applying whatever name appears to be correct for their fig. Not researching. Not comparing. Just naming. It's wrong. The response that "names don't matter" makes no sense. Do you grow a jujube and call it an apple becuase it kind of tastes like the other? Imagine if as a succulent grower if names didn't matter? The cornerstone of Fig.Yuku.com is to preserve cultivars. We are not going to reclassify, just accurately preserve what is already out there. If it is unknown, it will be called unknown. The primary reason for a "trusted seller" list is so that a member will feel confident that they will get what they buy. If you want LSU Tiger, you will get LSU Tiger.

Oversight: I don't think you need to have an over-moderated board. But you need some sort of moderation. Objective, honest moderation. Many of the problems complained about in this thread can be solved with active moderators. Incorrect information can be corrected. Spammers and fake sellers can be immediately removed. There was a recent issue here with a member having 2 usernames. The free flow of information is a blessing, but the free flow of bad information is a curse.

You are welcome to disagree with me. I'm interested in other perspectives.

As a former Division 1 football player, I spent my formative years learning the importance of teamwork, respect, selflessness,  communication, and doing the right thing. I carry that into my personal life and my career. They used to be here. I hope they come back.  I felt helpless that I couldn't change the path. That's why fig.yuku.com exists. There will be no bullying. There will be no stymying of free thought. Fighting will not be tolerated. Figs will be explored and respected. We will look for members to substantiate information if need be to keep information as close to factual as possible. I hope you'll come over, take a look, and talk figs.

I buy a bag from the local garden center that is specifically labelled as a starter fertilizer for grass.  This fertilizer by formulation is gentle stuff. It's meant to be spread right along with unsprouted seed. It doesn't get gentler than that! My cuttings love it and it's slow release.

Hands down go buy a big bag of grass starter fertilizer. I even use it on rooted cuttings with tons of success. It does not burn roots. By nature the starter fertilizer is very gentle and releases slowly. It's fairly cheap when you consider the amount you get.

Im not looking to pick a fight here, but how do names not matter?
If you don't hold a rigid line on the names of figs, then go to ebay.  I'm going to list a Col De Dame Gris that could possibly be brown turkey. But hey, what's in a name.

People should have some degree of confidence in what they are buying. If someone buys a fig that they believe is RDB, and it's really cuttings some guy got out of his neighbor's yard that "look like RDB", then are you really getting RDB? And when that gets propagated, now you have it spreading all over the place. Give it whatever name you want but not something that has already been used and accepted.

Bill is also a great guy, who will take the time to explain all that he knows about figs, and how to care for them.  He does seminars during the summer on how to plant your figs (in the large pots of course), also a seminar on summer care (fertilizering, lime application, watering tips), and one seminar at the end of the year on fig tree pruning.  And to top it all off, at the end of the season he throws his annual fig festival with a live band and all type of fig tasting ( he has 250 varieties at this time, and various home made fig recipies for the tasting) "all for free". There were about 300 people in attendence for the 2012 festival.
He sells all the varieties that he grows (all 1yr. & 2yr. old plants).  As far as I know he does not ship his trees, you need to visit in person, but I guarantee you that you will enjoy the trip.

Definitely a nice guy. Sells his potting system VERY hard when you meet him.
BUT....Be careful....Your statements above are not entirely correct. Before you buy, ask him where that particular cutting came from. He does sell trees from cuttings that did not originate from his trees...... He's also has some potential naming conflicts. An example is that his "Lebanese Red" is NOT the same as Bass's "Lebanese Red"

How do you harvest your urine? You ever wonder why cab drivers like "Sunny D" so much?

Seriously guys?!..Why not pee first, then drop a deuce right in the root zone?! It's organic and the neighbors will finally stop coming over!

I've been to Bills a few times. He is close to my house. You could not create better looking, healthier trees.

A few points about Bill's Figs:

1: He does not ship(if you want one of his trees, i'm happy to help out a member and i'll ship it to you, just pay for the material and shipping although I don't think he has anything "special"). You'll have to call him for his list of trees that changes yearly.
2: He sold me a Neri II last year that exploded with FMV a few weeks after I bought it home. All of his trees onsite are clean, so I suspect some of his scion is coming from an external source
3: Well worth the visit, but be prepared for the hard sell to buy his potting system.
4: If you are within a few hours, go buy a tree just for the invite to fig fest in the fall.
5: His Red Lebanese is NOT Bass's Red Lebanese(thanks to some members for pointing that out earlier in the year)

Pete,

We just had our third, and im sure my opinion will change as they get older, but three kids(all boys ages 4,2,3 months) is a LOT.

The answer is up to you! My best fig will be the one that I put in-ground in zone 6A and makes it uncovered.
Taste is a secondary factor for me. Florea is high on my list for its cold hardiness but people who value taste fest and foremost may find it insepid.

I do reserve 20% of my trees for pot culture. Ones I know aren't hardy enough but they taste good.

The started munching on leaves in the fall. My answer was to take up bow hunting again and make this problem disappear. Now I have venison in the freezer and less fig destroyers. Is making a venison loin with fig sauce poetic justice? I say this as I just enjoyed two venison hot dogs for lunch.

Pete,

Seriously though, 42 is a solid number.  My end game has always been a 10 tree orchard in which I do not protect during the winter here in 6A.  It's still my goal but like you said...there's always room for a few extra "special" ones.

I use pelletized 10-10-10 right on top of the dirt. That way it gets a little fertilizer everytime I water. This is after I can see roots through the cut and have active leaf growth. Never lost a cutting to fertilizer burn

Aside from that, I admire Jon, our administrator here, who sells figs and cuttings and pays for this website, that he even allows ANYone to sell cuttings, and in the entire time I've been here, it's rare to see somebody posting a link to something they are selling.  That's usually done by someone else who is upset by the Ebay offering.  His generousity and desire to learn and share knowledge is the reason I'm here!
