Let's see Pres. Obama ran on a platform.......the American people said.......YES...........He then ran again..........The people said Yes.......Once again to the tune of nearly 5 millions votes.  Yet.....the republicans attach stipulations in regards to a law, that was found constitutional and is the law of the land!  The point is that it takes money to run this country!  We do it together!  Myself and my Siblings have served and is still serving this country for over 40 years in the military .  We were not asked to serve, we believed in the country, we don't talk..... we do!  Congress.....should do the will of the People!  The Tea-Party is still upset that the American People Chose Barack Hussein Obama as their president and their Voice!  Get over it!

Nelson I have a brown turkey as well, the guy that I got the cuttings from in texas, said it was a texas everbearing.  It does not look like the texas everbearing that I find on the web.  Today I went out and picked 38 figs, weighing on average 34 grams each.  All total was 3.3 lbs.  The fruits are rounder than yours, with little to no neck.  They get that purplish colour as yours and they are very sweet and Honey Dew Melon tasting.  They weep honey from the eye constantly and it taste like a honey syrup.

Update, I went out to check on both the vista and the Verte, The Vista fig is getting darker and the verte is drooping more and softer.  Ottwan.... I will cover the fig trees that I plant in the ground this fall.  I bend them in half, surround them with cardboard and stuff them with straw and leaves.  Cover the entire lot with black 6 mil plastic.  This works really well for me here. In May of the following year, I unwrap  them, use the Cardboard and leaves as mulch.  I fertilize with Rock Dust, Worm Casting, Bone Meal and Blood meal (4 lbs of Each).  They seem to love this!

Good Afternoon All,

I just wanted to let everyone know, my Strawberry Verte and Vista is beginning to ripen.  I am in zone 6b columbus ohio.  These two are in pots.  I got the Strawberry Verte from Bass last year and the Vista from Encanto farms.  Both are doing well and have about 20 figs each on them.  I plan on planting them in the ground this fall..

Snag...why do you water your figs in the winter?  I am in Columbus ohio, I store my figs in the garage.  I have never watered them during the winter.  I would think by watering them in the winter you increase the chance of root damage.

I believe he was only referring to Alabama, when he describe the fig belt.  Meaning that the figs would survive through the winter, without being protected.

Hello All,

After 5 days in my spagnum moss container.  Most of my cutting that I have looked at have root initials.  I soaked the moss in Super thrive, worm casting and rock dust (AZOMITE).  I also soaked the cutting in the same bucket for 30 minutes.  The Black isichia is on top it has root initials all over it.  I am going to leave them a bit longer, I will recheck them on Sunday.

Yes......I have used it with really great results.  All you need to do is lightly sprinkle.. that is it.  I use it on my seeds as well as transplants.  I received cutting from UC Davis last week.  I have them in Spagnum awaiting root initals.  Once I see them I will dust them lightly with Mykos...then plant up in Cups!

Motown.. I am in the same zone in Columbus Ohio. I put mine in my unheated garage, they overwinter just fine. The only problem I have is every year I get two field mice to come in. They chewed down a small one pretty good but it came back with no problem. So I put out traps with peanut butter, takes care of the real quick.

Mushrooms are a sign that your mix is more fungal dominated than bacterial. Remember if it was not for fungus we would be miles deep in fibrous matter. Mushrooms are our friends, because you mix is probably more woody, mushrooms have come along as your helper to reduce the material back to useable energy for your figs. Trees make fungal associations and annuals like veggies make bacterial.

Count yourself luck!

Not kidding at all, a flowering pear is still a pear, still in the pear family.  More than likely a mutation or a purposeful genetic cross.   In the case of the hawthorn it is related close enough to a far distant relative of the pear and apple, that is why you can graft both of them to it.

If it is in the same family you can graft and edible to it.  Glad to help!

I started about seven years or eight years ago, when we moved into our house.  The bulk of the design I added in the first two years.  Once you get it started you just slowly add or quickly add. Mi new exactly how the trees would mature and to what size.  The most important thing for me was low maintenance and fruit trees/shrubs/berries certainly are.

As far as the grafting, it is easy! Makes sense if you have a small area and only room for a few trees.  I have three differen varieties on all of my trees, aslong as the species are the same family.  You can graft them, so for example,  you can graft, peaches, plums, apricots onto a cherry tree.  If you had a hawthorn...you can graft apples and pears to it.

Think about all of these flowering pears in neighborhoods you caneasily graft edible pears.

Pete...I think permaculture would be a great read for you.  I have setup a system.  Where there is an overlap of different fruits and veggies.  Mainly fruit,  I have multiple different strawberries that are available different times, blueberries, grapes, pears, apples, raspberries, hardy kiwi, peaches, blackberries, figs.  This is all going on while the veggie garden is happening.  This is all happening in a typical suburban lot.

To expand it further I have grafted multiple varieties on my peaches, pears and apples that fruit all at different times.   I have designed my backyard to be 70% fruit that returns each year with little maintenance and 30% veg garden which require quite more work.

Like I stated before one or multiple varieties overlap as the season goes along.

I bunch together the branches and tie them up.  I then surround the fig with a wire cage and pack it with straw. Then I surround the cage with card board boxes (open up an flatten).  I then again pack it with straw.  Finally I cover the entire thing with visqueen.  Done

I noticed that the peter's honey is putting on figs off of the new growth.  Wow!  I am shocked... I think I have a keeper with this tree.  I don't think they will mature but I will leave them to see.

From what I understand, vista is genetically Identical to VBD.  For those members that have both can you confirm, leaves, ripening and flavor similarities?

I would also like to add if you prune heavy do not fertilize during the growing season, as the heavy pruning is all it need for super growth.
