Thank You all! But, unless I can by some miracle? Find the funds to build a greenhouse as a perment home for my trees,,
I'm afraid I can no longer lift, and move them anymore. 15 lbs is all the Doctor says I can lift from now on.
So, I guess that's the end of my tree growing! Breaks my heart. But, what can I do?
It was so much fun while it lasted.. :)

Nichole,
I've had that same problem but, with mold on top of the soil of my kiwi cutting's.
I used 1 table spoon Neem oil in a quart of warm water, with a teaspoon of dish soap.
Shake well before using, Works instantly! usually only one treatment needed.

I had few do the same thing,
increase the humidity as Grasa suggested,
keep the soil from drying out completely
It will sulk for a few weeks to a month then go on and grow.

I tired something today to seal a crack in an inch thick cutting, the crack in it is 4" long.
I couldn't find my wood glue but, I did find a small tub of Plumbers Putty.
It's soft, malleable, nontoxic, water proof! Doesn't dry out, recycle-able, clean up with soap and water.
I hope it does the trick!

When using bleach water, the best way to completely neutralize the bleach after dipping your cutting in it,
is to then dip the cutting in vinegar to completely neutralize the bleach before rinsing it off under water.
They chemically cancel out each other's PH. It works!

Welcome Fuzz,

I'm zone 5b-6a and I've been thinking of trying the "step over" pruning method myself.
It's the winter chewing varments you have to consider when making such decisions though.
It would be an aweful lot of work just to lose them to the "chewers".

Fuzz,
I've seen pictures where mice/rats had chewed through 2" thick wooden boxes to get to the food contents.
Besides, that's a lot of wrapping to have to do since the whole tree is so low to the ground, and completely accessable to rodents!
It would look like a mummy by the time you're done! LOL
I suppose it could be done by a younger/healthier/richer man than myself.
I have no idea what could be used to cheaply wrap the tree so that they couldn't easily chew through.
Sounds like a good challenge for someone to take up though.

And more expected in the next 2 days!

I'm only at 2,500 feet above sea level,
The higher elevations will get up to 12"
which is great if you're a skier!

Wow! a Florida species of frog in Texas!
I saw a frog exactly like that one once,
It was residing on a 12 foot round Giant Staghorn fern that came in from Florida
to the greenhouse I worked at in Richmond, VA some 35 years ago.
It ended up being the company's mascot, and never left that fern in the 5 years I worked there.
Visiting kids always looked to see if they could find where he was hiding.
Thanks for sharing the picture! A Happy Memory! :)

Mark,
I believe there was another thread on this method (with pictures) mentioned a few months back.
If I remember right, it is in Japan that this method was being used?

It looks like it would probably work beautifully in my climate but,
I'd expect voles/mice would eat them alive during the winter months here.

I'm curious to see how it's all protected during the cold winder months?
It seems to me that covering them with straw, leaves, plastic, dirt, etc,
would be nothing but an invitation to a LONG salad bar for rodents all winter!

Has anyone one seen winter pictures of this method used in the US?
Or must one assume that they are not protected at all?,
And/or this method only works in warmer climates?

I would suggest a "slow growing lawn!"

There is a type of grass that's been around for over 60 years that is called Zoysia, It's very low mantainence, low height, slow growing, and the leaves if this grass weaves it's self to make a nice thick green carpet of disease resistant grass that you only need to mow ONCE OR TWICE a year.
My grandfather had a lawn of this grass. Barefoot, it was like walking on a nice thick rich Persian carpet!
It will grow so thick that it will sucessfully choke out all other grasses and weeds as it fills in.
Live starter plugs can be bought online for pennies a plug.
The only downside to Zoysia is it goes dorment in the winter, and turns completely brown from the first frost until spring when it will send up healthy new green shoots and be green again for the next season.
It can easily be kept in check with simple edging barriers, since it doesn't send out long runners like other grasses.

I elevate the pot and it's saucer, onto milk crates, bricks, etc.
and use a strip of wet cloth as a wick and hang it over the side of the water filled saucer,
guiding the extra water to drip into a coffee can, or other container below it.
I pour the wicked off water through again, or toss it when needed.
When the saucer empties, I store the cloth strip in the saucer to get wet the next time it's needed.
and to keep it handy in case of immenent over flowing.

Geez Suzi!
Do you think you could maybe back off a bit on the hostility?!?! JMHO ! :-)

The idea I had was to isolate circling roots. by creating a space for them to run without strangling.
Which seems to be both the biggest problem, and concern with growing figs in pot culture.
Seem to me once the roots grow past the basket, and are pruned, they will naturally branch into new thinner roots!
Being air pots are so much more expensive! I thought this could be used as an alternative idea.

Sorry, if I insulted anyones intellegence by it! Geez!

Hmmm,
I wonder if you could plant your tree in the basket, then slide it into an even larger container like an outer shell, with soil in between the basket, and the larger container?
Roots would grow out of the basket through the holes, into the soil between the 2 containers. then circle in the soil between the two containers?

At pruning time, just slide off the larger outside container, cut the roots back to the outside of the inner basket container, put the basket back into the outer, larger container, then add new soil in between the two containers.
It would hold water, soil, allows circling of roots without strangulation, and can be easily root pruned at will too?
Would that logically work?

In my windows I have a sheet of poly/plexy glass that looks like "Crackled glass"  ,
(used in suspended ceilings under fluorescent lights for light dispersion)
Comes in 4' X 2' sheets for about $7.00 a sheet at Lowes. Cut-able with hand shears.
Lets full sunlight in but, it breaks up sunlight like a myriad of tiny prisms so it doesn't burn your plants.
Works great as glass insulation, and for privacy too!

But, I cut back on watering, and have a 8 gallon humidifier running.
Things are looking better for the rest now. :)

I learned the same lesson 20 years ago!
No Biggie! Live and learn!

I figure the Urea they use in time released breaks down much slower than in other types of fertilizers,
So you get an instant build up of ammonia all at once that the plants can not safely absorb.
It burns their root hairs thus killing them.

You might want to look into Googling a "rocket stove" for greenhouse heat.
Youtube has some great videos on what it is, and how they're DIY made.
Most efficient heating method for greenhouses, sheds, and even dwellings!
Uses 1/4 the normal amount of wood for burning, uses an  inverted 55 gallon metal drum,
recycles the fire's smoke until it's used up, and only co2 and steam are the only by-products left,
and they can be vented outside, through underground pipes,
which creates an underground radiant heat bank under your greenhouse. DIY Simple to make, and use!
Pretty interesting idea, some very good experiments on heating.  check it out!

Check your fertilizer ingredients!
You'll probably find UREA listed, and it is ammonia based!
It's usually some form of urine! which = Ammonia!

You should Never dissolve time released fertilizers!
They are very concentrated!

Suzi, there is an old "organic" remedy for killing moles,
and voles that I remember hearing about many years ago that was reported to have good results.
(My grandfather's neighbor swore by this method)

Take 2 sticks of Juicy Fruit chewing gum from their wrappers, and roll them up like you would a rug.
(Be sure to wear exam gloves first, so you don't get any human scent on the gum)
And drop 2 sticks down into each mole hill, or active tunnel.

Moles, and voles love the smell and taste of Juicy Fruit gum but, can't digest it, or pass it.
There by effectively plugging up their "plumbing" causing them to die in a few days.

It may be worth the experiment?

I'm in zone 5b-6b

My first fig tree was 'Hardy Chicago'.
I bought a one gallon container from Lowes last April,
and immediately transplanted it into 3 gallon container.
By last September, it grew 6 times the size it was when I bought it.
And It gave me about 2 dozen small dark purple figs!
I found the figs to be a very delicious, mild "peachy/apricot" flavor.
I'm looking forward to this years crop, which will taste even better!
I'm glad I bought it.

There is a very good variety of figs to choose from that will grow in our zone.
It's a matter of choice as to what you want in a fig, by color, taste, size, etc.
for growing in ground, or in containers.
It's best to research on this forum before you decide, lots to choose from.
Lots to know!
Good Luck!
And Welcome to the forum!

I believe the cat pee smell is a natural defense for fig trees against mice,
and other small gnawing rodents.
Smell like a cat that's been marking it's territory, and is nearby,
It's too bad the figs haven't figured out how to keep that smell when dormant.
