The carpet works well too... especially if you can wrap a couple layers and stuff the centre with dry leaves. That is what I use and works well.

I keep my potted figs in a cellar as well Angela... Its all concrete and stays damp enough that I just give the pots a cup or 2 (depending on size) every month or so. I am not sure its even needed but do it just to be safe. Just don't soak them too much. :)

It would be nice for those varieties that we only grow from Breba if there was a way to prevent them from producing main crop figs to maximize the next years breba crop potential. :)

What I do with my outdoor trees prior to wrappng them is use aluminum foil around the bottom foot or so. Its easy to just crumple it around trunks/branches and mice won't chew it. works 100% for me.

I had a real big issue in my greenhouse one year with mice chewing and started this application then and it stopped the damage after that.

Also wanted to mention that when our frosts hit I pulled off some figs that had started turning dark but were still rock hard. Latex oozed out of them when I picked them. I put them on the counter and within 4 or 5 days they had softened and were quite jammy interiors and tasted quite good. I was pleasantly surprised. I would recommend others try this at the end of the season for figs that have changed colour but not ripened yet.

Subject: Potted figs sunk in ground - 2015 Replies: 9

Thanks.. it is quite a bit of work with a large amount of pots. This past year I sank 70 in the ground. I'm a glutton for punishment I guess lol. I broke 2 shovels getting them out of the ground this fall lol. Note to self.... don't buy the cheapo shovels at the hardware store lol.

I think next year for the ones I will sink inground (which will not be 70 lol) I will change the holes in the pails. Rather than 3/4" holes I think it would work better to have maybe 6 or 8 vertical cut out strips maybe 2"wide down the side of the pot to let the roots spread as they need to quicker but in a way that you can easily sink a spade down to cut the roots and pull out the plant in the fall. The problem with the holes is the roots will get constricted quite easily and also it takes quite a bit of time in the spring for them to get reestablished enough to not have to water them. I think the more soil contact the rootball is exposed to might aide in faster roots getting out. Just a thought at least.

Well this thread has given me the itch to try my hand at smoking some meat! I was torn between the weber smokey mountain 18" and the Napoleon Apollo 3-in-1. Here in Canada the WSM are $399 at home depot but Canadian Tire had the Napoleon 200 on clearance at $199. It has 16" grills which is a bit smaller but I think will be plenty for me. Plus I like the versatility of it.

Just wanted to point out that on my Bourjasotte Noire I get a variation of leaves on it including enormous leaves similar to that Vito posted. I wouldn't mind growing VdS and Brogiotto Nero sometime to compare to my Bourjasotte Noire. If they turn out to be almost identical.... that is definitely not a problem! :)

Thanks everyone..

Ricky.. I haven't had any of my Cdd's produce figs for me yet (had some this year but they dropped) but I would think they would be as late if not later than BN from what I've read.

Pino.. this one seems to put out figs in bunches similar to Maltese Beauty which is nice. I also used miracle grow "mega bloom" granulated fertilizer so not sure if that had any effect or not.

One of my favourite dark berry figs. A very vigorous grower also. Its a later fig so I give it a bit of a head start in the greenhouse. These figs could have used a few more days ripening but noticed a drop of honey in one. Centres were full of honey.

Hi Navid,

I have been interested that UDG variety of yours for some time now. It sure looks like a winner!

I think this is my 6th year growing figs now and am at the point that I have to start widdling down the variety list to focus only on the good ones. This hobby is so addictive you want to try them all lol. My first fig plant I bought at a nursery.. it was an italian fig of some sort. Since then after joining this forum and meeting lots of other members I've learned a lot about this hobby.

I would love to try yours if you are still offering those cuttings. :)

I've had a few brebas ripen already with some LSU Gold, Bronx U/k, and Desert King brebas just starting to swell now. I have some main crop Dr. Gowaty ripening now but they were started as cutting mid winter so they have been growing awhile. Looking forward to September for a lot of main crop figs this year though.

I have a couple small calvert plants that have quite a few figs for its size. I believe they are a white fig though very similar to verte or JH Adriatic

http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/calvert-4842512

edit...   looking at Almost Eden's site it appears they have acknowledged that.

"The fig that we received as Calvert obviously is not. Our Calvert figs are small to medium sized rounded to pear shaped figs with a dark reddish-brown skin, amber flesh, and dark purplish-red pulp. According to Condit, Calvert is the same as Verte and so it should be a dark green to green fig with dark strawberry pulp."

I just went out to check on another one that's been drooped over for a few days. When I lifted it to have a look (its a small plant so figs are only 10" off the ground) it snapped off. It could have used a few more days but still was excellent flavour and texture. A very nice morning treat!!

Hi Ralph... I'm not sure about that? I don't have that one. This one was sourced from Greece but is supposed to be an italian variety. I think it also goes by just Gentile or Fico Gentile. Here is a link to an old gardenweb post that shows the same fig. Sounds like its a San Pedro (my main crop dropped last year but was its first year).

A cheap and easily solution that works great for me for my outside overwintered plants is a piece of tin foil wrapped around the bottom 8". Its easy to form around branches. I had quite extensive mice/vole damage in my greenhouse one spring and as soon as I started using the tin foil it stopped.

Hi Bill,

Congrats on tasting your first homegrown fig! :)

It isn't desert king as they are green exterior and reddish pulp. I'm not sure what variety it might be but one thing I can tell you for sure if you would have waited at least another 5-7 days before picking it the taste would have been exponentially better :). You want that white meaty part to start getting translucent and the centre to get really juicy.

I enjoyed this fig today on my small Gentile Bianco. This will be a breba only producing fig for me here in Canada. I am growing this potted (in ground). It was a good sized fig and rich in flavour. Nice and syrupy. I'd scarf down a plate of these if I had them in front of me! :)   Very happy with this one for the quality of its breba.

I purchased this a couple years ago from Brugmansia-Quebec nursery here in Canada. It dropped its main crop figs each year but I've read its a San Pedro type. I've also read Grise de Tarascon is synonymous with Dauphine. This year it has some brebas and I just picked this one today. You can see the pith could have been more translucent so I should have left it a few more days. First fig of the year so yes I was impatient lol. It was still an excellent tasting fig with that richness that stays on your palate for a while. If anyone has Dauphine (Paully I think you have that one??) that might compare the fruit and leaf I would be curious to see if it is similar.

This was the make or break year for this one and for a breba its a keeper.

Those roots will eventually dry up and die. If they are close to the soil line and you have room in the cup I'd gently add some more potting mix to cover them.

I get that a lot when I have cups in a plastic tote for humidity. In a high humidity environment the cuttings will root above the soil line very frequently.

Akram do you think pinching growth on a DK might hasten the ripening of the breba by diverting energy from vegetative growth to fruit ripening? Mine made it through overwinter inground and have about 15 brebas on it now. I've trimmed back the branches that did not produce any breba so that they could push out new growth for next years figs starting at a lower point. With the branches I have brebas on now as soon as they ripen I was thinking of pruning them back so hopefully there will be enough time for them to push out growth for next year. All in an attempt to keep the tree as compact as possible for wrapping purposes.
