Would heating the soil up to kill the gnats work? I haven't had any problems with gnats luckily

A couple of those bigger ones will ripen. I would take off the smaller ones so the bigger ones ripen fast. If they don't ripen on time, then you can still make jam out of them.  Beautiful tree

I pick my variety's mostly on cold hardiness. I had a lot of success rooting, with a couple exceptions, so I looking forward to trading some of my duplicates for these.

1. Black Bethlehem  (had 6 cuttings from a generous member and all failed)
2. Black Greek (cold hardy)
3. Hardy Hartford (had cuttings but all failed)
4. Macool ( good taste)
5. Keddie ( cold hardy)
6. Lyndhurst White ( don't have a lot of green figs and it seems cold hardy)

Others:
Sweet George,Salem Dark,  Ladreck English Brown Turkey, and few unknowns that survived this winter.
I think this year will be last for rooting because I am nearing full capacity

Mine came in today and it looks really nice and big, it was well packaged. This variety was in zone 6b unprotected so it will hopefully be hardy for me in zone 6

So I put each cutting in a red solo cup with newspaper on the bottom. Then I put soil and then I watered it thoroughly. It is under a humidity bin and I was going to put rooting hormone but I did not have any. I will get some soon and put it on the bottom of the cuttings. The leafs are a bit droopy but I think they will pull through. I will post pictures soon

i had this variety, but it failed to root at my neglect. In my opinion it is one of the most hardiest figs out there with Florea, HC, and MBVS, but I have heard it ripens very late, so it isn't the best for short season climates.

Put Florea and Marsellies Black in the sweet spots and then JH Adritic and Hardy Chicago in the bad spots. Florea is the hardiest, then MBVS and Hardy Chicago are the same and then JH Adratic. I would put the 2 hardiest in the sweet spot because it will almost guarantee your tree living.

Anyone have a happy story about a in ground surviving? My 5 1 year old potted figs all survived this winter. It got down to 9 degrees where they were and stayed below freezing for weeks on in. They are just budding out now.

Some might not be dead because the fig trees are taking a long time to break dormancy.

A good Hardy Chicago stain is you best bet. Even better is to get cuttings from your neighborhood just look around or go to a Greek/Italian/Portuguese neighborhood like Astoria

Has anyone had success with Artichokes in zone 6? I might try it this year and build a cage with leafs around it in the winter. I heard "Northern Star" was the hardiest but I cannot find a sourse of seeds anywhere.

I use 75/25 potting soil and perlite. I will let it dry out and see what happens. Thank you

It was done rooting and it had a few leafs breaking out. The cut is on lighter side with a lot of perlite and it has enought water. I think it is a water problem. I water it thoughly then let it dry out slightly. I water every other day. It is in a plastic bin, which helps keep the humidity up.

I would just leave and find out what happens. At worst you will lose the top of the branch. Maybe put it out in a well ventilated space.

Started rooting my Chiappetta yesturday. I have a lot of breba on the cuttings. It has SO much. Too bad if i put them in ground the breba will most likely die off.

Art do you have information on LC Dark?

I got a good amount of cultivars by trading. Trading is the best way to acquire new cuttings in my opinion. I want to grow 1 hardy fig plant that will give me enough figs to eat and make jam. I plan on getting a good amount of hardy cultivars and testing them out. The one that do good, I keep. The ones that freeze to the ground, or have many problems will see the axe.

I use these. 42 cents a bag plus shipping. These would be good for figs for 2-3 years. But at that time I plan on putting them inground. These would be perfect because they are white and reflect light back to plant

I use this recipe but I do not add "lattice strips" I like it without because it looks better. I love figs and raspberries in desserts. The raspberries add a "fruity" element and plus I have about 5 pounds of fresh raspberries a day from my bush
