wicked tiny whitish bugs and i'm now noticing the webs....
Do you think they are the cause of this?

at what night temp should i start to worry?

Frank, it’s a unheated detached garage constructed of cement blocks.

Not sure why the trees are starting to wake up now.  I know that my garage is in the sun all day and the temps in the garage never really drop below freezing.

But it does get warm in there even on a mild day. Its 70 F outside today!!!! WAHOO….!!   It’s been dropping down to 47 – 50F at night for the past few nights.

i have some trees in the garage that are ready too go outside. some have broke bud and others are almost there. Can the trees be placed in direct sunlight as they come out of dormancy? Also, what about the young trees that i rooted months ago? The young trees have been sitting on all the south facing window sills since Nov/December. Can i place the trees in my portable greenhouse? I placed two 55gal barrels filled with water to help regulate the night temps.... as you can see in the pic, the cover is opaque so it really isn't direct sunlight or is it? i do have a shade cloth that i can drape over the the frame inside. the shade cloth is supposed to block 60% of the sunlight.....

i have a bunch rooted cuttings that have been in 1 gal pots for over a month and i would like to give them a feeding since they are due for a watering.

i dont have a wood burning stove but i do heat my home with a wood pellet stove. i purchased one of those mini portable greenhouses. so far it's been working like a charm. humidity in the house is typically around the mid 40's but in the greenhouse it's up around the high 70's to mid 80's. once they outgrow the cups and get potted up to the 1 gal pots they are then placed on the window sills to fend for themselves. the further along the root system is the better they can handle the dryer enviroment. an occassional misting helps too.....

so i went ahead and did the soil drench on the 26th since my plants were due for a watering.
afraid that the soil drench solution would shock my plants, i was worried what i was going to see sunday morning when i walked into the spare bedroom/grow room. all my plants were standing at attention!!
no droopy or wilted plants. what i also noticed was the smell of the SNS 203 which smells just like mothballs, must be the clove oil....
i had also hung some of those sticky fly traps just inches above the plants. as of this morning i've only noticed 1 gnat stuck on the trap and no gnats running around the soil. did it work? i dunno yet....
but prior to the drench i would see atleast a gnat or 2 on the soil of just about every cup. i will re apply the soil drench when the plants are thirsty again....
i was told that the soil drench would also kill the larvae.
i will keep you posted.

has anyone ever used this product?
the owner of the local indoor gardening supply store highly recommended this and told me to apply it just when the plant needs water. the 2 methods of applying is a soil drench and foliar spray. the mix is 2-4oz to a gallon for the drench and 2-6oz for the spray.

the active ingredients are;
Clove Oil 1.5%
Rosemary Oil 0.53%
other ingredients(97.97%);
Water
Polyglyceryl Oleate
Lauric Acid

Are any of these ingredients a NO NO for young cuttings?

Happy New Year!!!

it's been 4 days since my last update and i really didn't have anything new to post till this morning, i noticed a couple of cuttings that the roots are starting to pop up out of the soil. i was hoping to keep the cuttings in the 32oz cups for a while longer but i guess thats not gonna happen.
is this because of the higher humidity in the dome? i already removed the dome, figure with that many roots the plant will be able to support the tiny leaves.

time to pot up or can i simply just add a lil more soil to cover the roots?

sorry for the sideways picture....

i just compared the cuttings on the top shelf to the pic taken 2 days ago.....
maybe it's just me but i swear they have put on some more growth..!!
plus i also moved a cutting with good top growth and roots from the middle shelf to the top.
some of the cuttings no longer fit in the 2liter bottles without the leaves touching the plastic which i've seen cause some type of leaf damage. they have been without the dome all day and so far so good, no wilting.

pete,
i was never sure what the temps were in the sweat chamber. but after reading your post i placed a thermometer under the towel and waited for the heat to turn on a couple of times before taking a reading. the highest it got up to was 74.
most of the cuttings you see on the top shelf were started thanksgiving weekend.

hahaha...!!!
Steve, you got that right!
thanx everybody. i definitely would not be at this point without the great people of F4F.

Grasa, i do use a good amount of moss. but it's not as much as it seems. i liked the idea i got from you about having the cutting upside down. so what i do is put down about an inch of moss on one end of the bin and about 3 inches on the other. this way i can keep the bottom end of the cutting elevated. then i put a thin layer of moss over the cuttings.

but all in all i believe that the sweat chamber is key. having the rooting bins and baggies just above the heating vent and a towel over them to help hold on to the warmth drastically speeds up the rooting process.
from there it goes to the bin just off to the side on the floor where it get ambient light and warm air from the heat vent.
once the cuttings start to show good root growth and some top growth i move them to the bin on the second shelf where they receive a little more light from the south facing window.
once they start to develop alot more top growth they get moved to the top shelf where they will receive somewhat direct sunlight (because of the low sun the light gets diffused thru the tree branches and some pines). but it works out. they'll received periods of direct sunlight and then filtered sunlight and so on for about 8 hrs a day. soon the days will be longer and the sun will be higher and the the cuttings will be getting alot more direct light.

I just helped my buddy wrap his tree for the winter. he gave me a bunch of cuttings for helping him out.
i would like to offer up these cuttings for the cost of shipping. so if anyone is interested, let me know.....

all i can tell you about this tree is that it is a real producer. this tree stands about 7'- 8' tall and probably produced over 800 figs this year. and that's no exaggeration..!!!! the green figs are huge with a honey colored inside and is as sweet as honey.. Here in zone 6 it produces an excellent breba crop around June and a massive main crop that starts to ripen in august and lasts right up to end of october. the last of the figs were picked November 11th and they were still very sweet considering the amount of rain we had received back in October.

also, what to do with multi tipped cuttings? do i leave them as is or should i snip off the tips and just leave the main branch/cutting?

Thanks,
Stevin

time for me to step up....kinda...
i'm gonna root some and store some.
here's a question, what if the only bleach i have in the house is the scented kind. is that still ok to use for the 10% solution?
it's fresh linen scent, if that makes a difference..hahaha

the only thing that is holding me back from starting the cuttings now is what will i do once they have gone past the cup phase and need to be up potted. at that point they will be much light to keep them happy.
i have south facing windows but the sun this time of the year barely makes it over the tree line. so i'm getting more of a filter sunlight coming thru the bare tree tops. is that enough to keep the plants healthy?
i really don't plan on running lights...

hahaha....
the wife pretty much gave me the stink eye when i told her that i was gonna store cuttings in the fridge.
but we do have another fridge in the basement.

it is getting pretty cold here. the garage lately has been hold temps in the 40's. but i'm sure it will get alot colder in there once the outside temps start dropping into the 20's.

i'm just a lil confused as too what steps i have to take to make sure that in 3 months from now i still have viable cuttings and not a bag of moldy rotted twigs.

some people say don't add any moist anything, just put the cuttings in a bag and toss into the fridge.
some say use a damp paper towel  or newspaper and put into a baggie and toss into the fridge.
some say use damp spagmus peat moss.......
i've read to wrap them with a damp something and then wrap snuggly with plastic saran wrap then into a baggie.....

i feel like Vinny Barbarino...

at my work here we go thru alot of these cardboard tubes. they are 3" wide and the cardboard is 1/8" thick and very rigid. they also hold up very well to moisture. i've used them on my fishing kayak to store certain lures and they typically get soaked and have lasted many years. i'm thinking of using these tubes to protect my small trees that are only a couple feet tall and still a single stem. i can slide the tube over the tree and then stuff it with insulation. there are even plastic end caps for these tubes.
any thoughts? has anyone tried something similar like using concrete form tubes for slightly larger trees?

Thanx

thanks for the replies!!!!
so i got 3 suckers potted up in 1.5 gal pots. the consensus is to bring them into the house rather than staying out in the unheated garage with the rest of the dormant trees.
i'll place them in front of a south facing window. 2 of them are single stem with few roots and 1 is a single stem with a couple branches but it is not the straightest but does have a good amount of roots and a 4th really tiny one that has barely any roots that i will put into a quart sized pot.

the single stem plants are roughly 3-4 feet tall. should i prune them shorter or leave them be?
and the not so straight plant, should that one also be left alone?

also i will be cutting up the branches to 6-8" pieces. i want to dip them in a 10:1 water / bleach solution but i just realized that the only bleach i have at the house is scented (clean linen).
will this make a difference? scented vs unscented?

i will do a drive by tonite to see if Senhor Joao bundled up the rest of the branches and placed them at curb side for trash pickup.

While at my buddies house this morning, his neighbor was pruning his fig tree to get it ready to be wrapped. i struck up a conversation about his fig tree and he offered me some rooted suckers that he had removed and some cuttings!!!!! Thank you Senhor Joao!!!!!!
he says that the tree has been there for over 40yrs and that it's an old Portuguese fig. he kept referring to it as Figo Preto(Black Fig). he described the taste as very very sweet. he described the fig as a bright red inside and a dark outside.

My questions are;
should i place the rooted suckers into 1 gal pots asap?!
this will be my first time storing cutting over the winter. should i be concerned with the cuttings that still have greenish tips?

i also attached a pic the last leaf and a very unripe fig that was still on the tree.
if anyone is willing to take a guess as too what it may actually be......
