Welcome to the forum, stslee.  I don't have any col de dame to share with you.  I sure wish I did.  You have some great stuff to share.  We also enjoy a variety of edibles at our home.  I hope you find what you are looking for.

My Costco nearby here in Portland area has big 40 oz bag organic unsulfured golden dried figs by made in nature. My phone keeps auto correcting the variety name, but they are not the dried dark variety. They are golden, chewy and moist. They were about 9.50.

I am in zone 8b.  We had a horrific winter this year (down to 6*).  I had my young cuttings in the shop without heat until the lines broke in the shop before I added a heater.  I lost the young Flanders but my Excel is doing well.  I have yet to try the fruit of either.

You should have pictures emailed to you so you can post them anonymously to get votes with no names tied to them. I think it could be fun.

I got cuttings from someone and they called the fig Strawberry Kadota.  Is there such a thing?  Or is it the Kadota with the strawberry added on because it's such a bright red inside?

I like getting those quarky little pieces. I've gotten pretty tiny cuttings to root or it could be left on for character or future plans.  I agree with Mark and think you should ask the person you are sending them to. It's nice of you to put so much thought into it.

I think that is just awesome that you are doing propagation project with the kids like that and it's beyond just stuffing it in some dirt and sending them on their way.  Recording findings can teach them so much. I vote to let it grow upside down also. Seeing what happens with growth would be educational.
I hope that my husband and I can continue to foster a love for plants in my children that will be lifelong.

I think the jury is out on that as far as I know.  So I'm just going to grow all three and see for myself.  I still need the Strawberry Verte though. :) Sometimes figs are so similar that they appear to be the same, but one might do better in wetter climates or one might do better in hotter longer summers.

What a great idea to spray paint the foil coverings on the air layers.  I too have scoped around the neighborhood looking for fig trees.  Here in the pacific northwest there isn't deep fig history like there is on the east coast so it's unlikely I would find anything other than the basic figs, but it's still fun looking and finding people who have to many ripe figs or just don't want them.  Fig jam!  I did find a white fig that is growing well here in the ground and the owner is quite nice in letting me take a few cuttings. I'd like to find out what it is some day.
Thanks for sharing!

I've wanted to post so many pictures but I cannot figure it out.  My files are too large and I cannot find a program to downsize them. I run on Linux and the Windows programs I've been pointed to do not work.  Is there a picture hosting anyone uses?  Is that easier?  If anyone could point me in the right direction, that would be awesome!

I have one in the same condition and I was wondering the same thing.  Would air layering get the tree to fork?  I have two long whips about 15 feet tall and everything (even the leaves) grows on the ends.  Having the strong growers be flexible as GRamaley suggests in pruning would seem to be helpful.
Sorry I don't have any direct help, Aaron, just more questions. :)

Wow! That is an impressive tree! Too bad you couldn't bring any home with you to remember your honeymoon.  Those laws are so complicated.  It certainly looks as if you thoroughly enjoyed your figs while you were there.  Croatia is a beautiful country.  Thanks for sharing your pictures.

THose look great, Tony! I don't get to have chestnuts very often. We have walnut and hazelnut trees around here. I've never heard of candied chestnuts.  It sounds delicious.  Thanks for sharing your recipe and I hope to get enough ripe figs to try it out next year!

Subject: What's your best black tasting fig for 2013?(one only...) Replies: 52
Posted By: Bikkurim Views: 4,914

I read these and I can't wait to have my figs producing a tasty harvest!
As a  side note, I have to say that I prefer the ID of Unknown  Negretta as I have a cutting from Marius' tree.  When I see "unknown Negretta" I know instantly that the Negretta from Marius is indeed an unknown fig, where as if the fig was named "unknown fig" I would assume it was a different fig and that didn't relate to anything I have.  It's less confusion for me. It's still an unknown fig.
Great thread!  Thanks!
