I picked up a window fan today that I will wire into a thermostat. I figure it will really help exhaust the hot air outside instead of cooking my room. Trial and error lol.
Thanks

I have to make some changes in my green house but fingers crossed I dont lose my larger potted figs. Only got a few figs to try last season but was hoping to get a bunch this year with the head start from the green house. This added stress to the plants probably wont help the cause.
PeterC your right the cuttings are high maintenance but one day.....

So I thought I was gonna beat mother nature by building a greenhouse attached to my house for my figs and citrus. I got tired of winter killing most of my plants. while I got home from work the other day and found my ventilation had failed and the green house was so hot it cooked a bunch of my figs. I have around 40 potted figs that were enjoying a great head start but now.....They all wilted down pretty bad. They have bounced back a bit but a bunch of them look like its mid october and the leaves are hanging low and darkening like they are gonna drop. My cuttings all poop now, leaves dried right up and died, all my garden seedlings all gone. I'll start over i am used to it but I am concerned about my larger potted plants that look like they are going dormant. Its been a few days but im nervous they will continue to get worse and die. Anyone else go through this.
Thanks
Mike

If for some reason someone left the cuttings too long in the humidity container, how would one go about hardening off the cuttings to bring them out of the container.
Thanks

Ebay figs and second chances

I have never suspected an auction was being run up by false bids but many times I have looked at the automatic bids and have found there seems to be me and one other person battling out for the win. Others have stopped bidding long ago while we keep bidding and drive the price up cause I hate to lose. This is also why I usually don't take the second chance offer. If it/more goes back to auction I figure I have albeit a small chance but none the less a chance that who ever I was driving the previous auction up with wont be bidding again and maybe the price wont go as high. The seller deserves every penny they can squeeze out of the auction after all this is not a free hobby. I have splurged on lots of eBay items. If you ask my wife most of it was stuff I have never had a need for. I have never had hard feelings about how much figs and cuttings go for, I know its not a cheap hobby. I have bought from a few different F4F members ( usually ones that I see contribute ) through auction, buy it now or best offer features. I have seen the great quality cuttings and care the F4F members have shipped me. My most recent was a nice mixed bunch of cuttings from garden whisperer, Good eBayer, nice cuttings and I was happy with the price. Like I said I know this is not a free hobby I have learned the hard way splurging on eBay and try to show more restraint now when I start bidding.

I usually don't accept a second chance offer. I would rather see the item re list and take another run at it and maybe get it cheaper. When it comes to a new variety of fig cutting I usually get swept up in the bidding and go higher then I wanted to in the first place. If I miss out on the variety then I go after others that are not as hot this year and will go after the original variety later in the season or next year when its cheaper.

Hey Rich,
Have you had any mold issues with this method? I am seeing a couple little puffballs on my cuttings this morning in the container.
Thanks,
Mike

Thanks every one for the replies so far. I will wait to take my cuttings for a while till my trees are fully dormant and start any green looking cuttings as soon as I get them.
Thanks again,
Mike

I have been looking on ebay for some cuttings and was wondering about storing them in the fridge for a few months. I have read on f4f that should be no problem but I am wondering does it matter if the cuttings are not from a totally dormant tree and I put them in the fridge? Same question, my own trees still have some leaves on them. Should I wait until after the leaves have fallen off them to take cuttings.
Thanks,
Mike

Hello,
So yesterday I bought a few fig trees of a fella who originally came from Portugal. These are very young trees from earlier this year. He described one as black skin with red inside, one with yellow skin pink inside. and one he described as a moscatel, which he said was a smaller dark fig. There was a bit of a language barrier but and seemed really nice and I am sure they will be nice trees if I don't kill them with love or let them get to cold this winter. Anyway question is the name Moscatel is it a common name for figs from Portugal. I am not even sure if the moscatel is a moscatel. He told me the one fig tree was a Ficus and the other was a carica. Was not gonna question him was just happy to get some different varieties.
Thanks,
Mike

I could accept her calling her business that but my manliness would be hurt if she referred to mine as the fig wasp

Is there room for one more snow bird (Canadian) in Florida.? They are nice looking specimens. I dont know about milkshakes but up till few days ago, I could make a snow cone. The fabric pots some of your trees are in, what is the name of them and how do they hold up?
Thanks,
Mike

Hello,
is it possible for young potted fig trees that look dead to come back from the roots. Does it ever happen? I lost a few this winter in my green house where they looked fine till mid February for the most part but now they look like they are dried right out brittle,
DEAD
. I watered them once a month till march, then as the greenhouse started warming i checked them more frequently and then really started to notice the die back now,
DEAD
. Could the High day / night temps fluctuations have stressed them too much? Is it a pipe dream hoping they might return?
Thanks,
Mike

Right now I only have some black jack, Osborne prolific and some Salem White with some leaves rooted early this year. The rest of my figs got a beat down from old man winter so I am in wait and see mode. Hoping the die back was not enough to kill them.
Suzi,
Thanks for the heads up, I will stay clear of all your crops
thanks,
Mike

Hello,
I have been lurking around the site for a while reading lots but I figured I should say hello and thanks for sharing so much information. I am from Southern Ontario, Canada. I started growing figs last year but have been eating them for a lot longer, hehe.
Thanks,
Mike

Hi everyone,
I had a 6 potted figs with plastic marker stakes that I thought my kids were pulling out to play a trick on their daddy. For almost a week straight I'd tear a strip off them every night after work for it and every night they swore up and down it was not them. Finally I caught the culprits, I had some turkeys I was free ranging for Thanksgiving and I caught them picking for bugs around the pots and they were pulling the tags out. I didn't feel bad about them losing their heads.

I got a bunch of little figs trees shipped from
Brugmansia-Québec last season, they looked great right out of the box and the prices were good too. More on the way this spring as well.

Starting cuttings in my aquaponics growbed

Hello,
What kind of gravel do you use in your grow beds? It looks like a small river rock to me. The expanded clay pellet is pricey and all the gravel around me is limestone so i would have an uphill battle with pH. I have wanted to try aquaponics for a while but other hobbies like figs have got in the way.
Thanks,
Mike
