Hi Tyler...I planted my Issai 5 or 6 years ago and it never did anything for me until this spring when it started growing like crazy and climbed all over my apple tree producing flowers and delicious grape sized fruits.I never had a problem with dieback though.

My Sal's EL started about a week ago but MBVS's buds are a little smaller and Dennis Delight is not showing much yet.

Hi Dave, I wrapped my two HC's with an insulating blanket that we use at the construction site.I cut it in half, wrapped and tied them with some string and at the base I put some bags of soil and some flower pots.I used nothing else...I planted another 3 year old HC in the south side of the house and didn't protect it at all, except for all the snow that I piled on top of it.This one seems to have survived with only a bit of damage to the tip that kept sticking out of the snow.

I unwrapped mine this afternoon...they look good.If they survived this winter (specially February) they'll survive anything, now that I believe found a fast and easy way to wrap them.

Here in South Oshawa, Ontario, Canada we reached a low of -25C (-13F)with a wind chill in the -30's Celsius and the following two or three nights remained in the lows to mid -20's C.This year I used insulating blankets which I brought from the construction site (we put them on top of new concrete when it's cold) and the temperature inside is from 4 to 8C warmer than outside, about 7 to 14.5F).I wrapped two HC's with them and left one HC unprotected on the south side of the house. This one I planted last spring,it's 3 years old and only about two feet tall. It's covered with snow...hope it survives! The other figs are in the basement and doing well so far.

I only have a very limited amount of varieties which I bought last year:they are in pots and I picked my first ripe figs from Danny's Delight followed by Sal's EL and MBVS.These varieties had maybe 6 to 10 figs each and I didn't expect much from them because they were only one year old and everything was at least a month or more behind. However I did like some members instructed(pinching after 5 leaves and thinning the fruit to about half) and tasted the first fig about 3 weeks ago.Sorry but I think the taste was about the same from all of them.My 2 in ground HC's were a disappointment:they died to the ground, grew some branches and lots of leaves with some figs but they'll never ripen. The HC that I had in a pot and planted in ground on the south side of the house has about 15 figs but none have ripened yet.I'll keep hoping since Jack Frost hasn't paid us a visit yet and my Negronne has 3 figs that I'd like to try.[Ed] Looked again today and found HC in ground has at least 6 figs that look good to eat.

Only hardy varieties...

1-LaRadek EBT
2-Florea
3-Bayernfeige Violetta
And maybe some white variety that's hardy and ripens in my area(Pane e Vino White, Lyndhurst White, etc...).

Thank you!

I contacted Adriano last year and he said that he still can't sell this variety:his tree is still too small.I'd love to try it here too along with Florea.

Hi, I also think of cold hardy figs those that survive down to zone 6/5b unprotected after 3 years or so.I hope my 2 HC's make it through this cold winter...I barely protected them.Last time I checked they seemed ok...

Wow!Never thought RdB would be hardy to Z6.Dave, obviously you are doing everything right.Do you protect them during the first few years, prune them every 5/6 leaves,etc...?Let us know how you do it please. We are now having very cold temps in the Toronto, Ontario area(around -18C/0F).What about you in your area?Half a zone can really make a difference...

Thank you for your suggestions...I did leave them unprotected last year and they died back to the ground when we had a couple of nights in February around minus 21 C or so and winds at 90 km/h.This year I barely protected them(two with burlap and tarp and the other only with a tarp).Hopefully they'll make it through...I think I'll keep protecting them for the next 2 or 3 years and then probably try again...It's probably a losing battle but you never know until you try it and see it for yourself.I'd never expose any rare varieties to this unless I had extras and I knew they were fairly "hardy".

Welcome to the forum.I'm in Canada zones 6a/5b and we haven't had a hard frost yet...all my annuals are alive including impatiens and geraniums. My figs trees in pots started turning yellow a couple of weeks ago but the ones in ground still have green leaves and no sign of going dormant yet(Hardy Chicago and Brown Turkey).I brought my potted plants out early this spring and we had a couple of nights in a row of hard frosts (-5c or -8c that is about 23f or 17.5f, can't remember now).Well, I thought they were both dead:the leaves turned brown and fell off and the soil in the pots was frozen like a rock.I just let them be and about a month later they started putting out new leaves and no die back!.So, I believe your trees will be fine.Don't worry and good luck.

I bought some of these figs from a local stand at the beach in Portugal and the young guy selling them said his grand mother called them Capa Rota (Torn Cape In english). They were big, dark colored and reddish on the inside.I'm just wondering if anyone knows this variety...Ah, and they were also very delicious!I also had the chance (twice) of picking fresh figs off the trees (both white and dark) with my wife and a couple of friends, something I hadn't done in over 34 years.I was like a kid in a candy store that I even forgot to take some pictures...sorry!!!

Great pictures Tam.I think that Gota de Mel maybe the same as Pingo de Mel because gota and pingo both mean drop so the translation would be Drop of Honey.I could be wrong but they probably are the same tree...Francisco or Nelson might be able to help you...good luck!

We had -20.3C (around -5F) in January and so far my 2 Hardy Chicago and 2 Brown Turkey planted last year seem to be doing well...however the winter is not over yet.

Hello everyone!I'm new at growing figs but two years ago I decided to buy a couple of trees that were being offered locally:one Hardy Chicago and a Brown Turkey.I overwintered them successfully in my basement and last May I bought two more of the same varieties and planted them all outside and they took off like wild fire.HCs are now over 1.5m and the BTs are a little bit shorter. We've had a cold winter with temps around -20C so far and I've noticed a bit of damage on the BTs but otherwise the wood is still green.I hope they make it through the rest of the winter since I gave them no protection whatsoever.I knew I was taking a chance but they weren't that expensive.Anyway, I'd like to try different varieties like Florea,Laradek Brown Turkey,Marseilles VS Black and Blue Celeste and others that you think or know do well in this climate.I live within 1Km of Lake Ontario so I believe I'm closer to a zone 6a than 5b.Any help or info on this topic is appreciated.Thank you.
