We grew avocados in N San Diego County and had occasional problems with chemicals used by the water department during heat when we were watering heavily. You might want to check with the water dept and see if they are treating their system for algae or other issues. They claim water treatment is safe but they will tell you not to use it for aquariums. hmm.  Some chemicals like chloramines do not dissipate like chlorine does.

How about braiding fig saplings to develop thick trunks on young trees? I once saw a photo of rows of braided carica fig trees but there was no explanation as to why they they were  braided.  I thought braiding was purely ornamental but maybe it is also done to produce thicker trunks.. I hope someone who has knowledge of tree braiding would comment.
I dont know if this could be applied to a tree that is already established

This year I made a lot of fig leaf tea.  The drying process took over the house because it was so rainy and humid they wouldn't dry quickly.one bag of fig leaves was overlooked for 3-4 days and about 2/3 of the leaves turned dark. It didn't look or smell like mold so I dried them anyway.  The flavor was a very pleasant surprise. It made richer, fruitier, darker tea than the green leaves do, and no bitterness.  I think this is what is accomplished when they ferment tea leaves to make the black tea which has a richer flavor than green tea. I prefer it and I will try to recreate this next time I pick leaves. (leave them in a paper bag for a few days.)  Some people boil the leaves but I fill the water reservoir of my 10 C coffee maker with water, then put 1/3 C of dried fig leaves + 1/2  tsp powered green stevia leaf into the empty carafe and let the hot water fill it.  I keep it on the warm mode until it turns off in about an hour and it makes a very fruity and just slightly sweet tea.  I'm thinking you could add orange/ lemon peel, anise seeds, cinnamon etc to the leaves to steep all together.  I found If you use powdered anything (stevia leaves , cinnamon etc) it will clog a coffee filter but if you let it set awhile the leaves and sediment settles to the bottom of the pot and you can strain it through a sieve. You can make a strong concentrate too and freeze icecubes.  Use one to a glass and dilute it.  I'm keeping a pitcher of this iced tea in the fridge but heat it up for chilly times.
I hope some of you dry your leaves and let us know what you do with them.
This tea is a good consolation for those of us who had a meager fig year,   If we cant eat em, we'll drink em.
PS: After grinding the leaves finer in a blender they are much more concentrated in volume than the hand crumbled leaves.  I now use only 1/2 the amount of tea leaves that I previously posted.  Looks like these measurements need to be worked out individually because the ratio of leaves to water can vary greatly according to how fine you grind the leaves.

Hi,   Do I read this right,  you leave the leaf stems hanging on but cut the leaf off them?  Does this have to do with the sap bleeding out,,, or ?

  Thanks Soni

Suzi, Just a thought..  Armadillos tear up old wood like that looking for insects.  They have amazing long digger claws and rip up decayed wood and dig up grubs in roots. I dont know if they eat any vegetation but that ripped up wood looks like what they do.  They are expanding into places they've never been in before.

Yahoooo.   I am the very happy winner of De La Reina.   I doubt that I would otherwise ever have the opportunity to have this variety.  I'm just sorry it's about an occasion that's so serious.
Harvey took on a BIG problem, created the solution, donated the prizes and got Bruno's life headed in a positive direction.   I hate to think what would have happened If Harvey hadn't intervened.
After doing some research on all these fabulous prizes, it looks like De La Reina will do best for me in the humidity of GA.  7-8.
Good luck to everyone on the next drawing.

Thanks again Harvey for what you're doing.  I hope the proceeds will surpass the goal.

Good for you!  Chuck I'm in the same boat, waiting to taste HC.  I gave away the HC cuttings I started to a gardening group "The Sod Busters."   Among other projects they create small gardens for people with physical and mental special considerations.  HC is their preferred variety because they say it's "an all around swell fig" in ground or potted and even in zone 6.  That's a good recommendation.  I just planted my first HC in the ground so I wont be tempted to give it away and hopefully I'll finally taste it.  They say the first year figs can be a poor indication of flavor and quality so we must keep that in mind.
Good luck to you.

I think I'm going to try your kitty litter idea.  I have about 100 1 gal figs I want to move up to 3 or 5 gal and I'd like a better potting mix than what I've been using (commercial potting mix + Perlite) It drains well but dries out too quickly.  I'd like a mix that retains moisture longer without being water-logged.  It wont be a very controlled experiment using mixed fig varieties but if I plant 1/2 using kitty litter and 1/2  without ,and do everything else the same for all, I should be able to see if there's a difference.  I hope to get around to repotting within the next couple weeks.  How much kitty litter would you use to 5 gal pot?

It's a little crowded. That's 68 of my surviving 5 gallon figlings. This winter tested me and the figs. Most of us survived but it got things into perspective. I'd kept my 5 gal pots into the garage and the 1 gallons. in a greenhouse above freezing, but then I fell for a false Spring and moved everything outside when they started leafing out. Even the gnarly Paradiso bronze sisters looked pristine and vivacious.  Bam! Then the last freeze hit during the only days that I was alone and physically unable to do anything about it.  I cried a few times that week watching them turn black.  This brought me to a new reality. They have to shape up or ship out!  I hired a bobcat and trenched in a water line and had the auger pop in holes for the the survivors that made a comeback. From now on its TUFF LUV.  These are planted only 21/2  feet apart but I hope after a winter or two I'll have a fig grove of the varieties that can survive here.  I see big, old fig trees around here.  I'm thinking the trick is to keep them alive until they develop mature bark.  Time will tell.  It's sure going to be a scary winter but maybe I could get a big tent to put over them, Ha then hold revivals to pay for the tent. [image]   I hope everyone else else had a happy ending to this winter.IMG_0434.JPG

UNRIPE Fig Preserv

What to do with the late figs that don’t ripen

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds unripe figs
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cloves
  • 1/2 Lemon
  1. Pick the unripe figs that are almost full size but still hard. Cut the stems, (If you wish you may also peel the skin off.) Place in a pot, cover it with water and boil them for 5 minutes.
  2. After they have been boiling for 5 minutes, drain the water and add new water and boil again. After 5 minutes, drain the water again.
  3. Now you will notice that the figs are soft. Add enough water to cover the figs in the pot, then add the equal amount of sugar. So for every cup of water 1 cup of sugar.
  4. Allow to boil for 15 minutes, then add a little bit of Cloves. Then allow the syrup to thicken then add the juice of half lemon. Let it cool, then place it in a jar.

My potted baby fig trees and 3 in-ground Celeste trees have rust. I read that fig rust in Fall causes early dormancy and they are losing leaves from the bottom up. The daytime temps are still running 65- 80's and they look wet every morning from the night fog.  Is there much harm from them going dormant so early?
  Thanks for any info

Do you suppose the reason is that when the trees fuse together they assume the attributes of a natural trunk that has that much girth?   or is it for stability in a windy location?     or WHY?

I agree with Jarrett your best option will be to find them in Korea.  You might inquire at schools that teach agriculture.

I suppose I'm just so grateful to be getting my first figs, that I think they've all been very good.  A couple of Ho-Hums were picked too green so I cant judge them. A couple of days ago was the first VdB and it was the best so far.  Up until then, the Red Sicilian, White Genoa made me very happy.  A few more of VdB may spoil me for others.  I cant wait to taste all the wonderful figs in my future, like my tiny 3 inch tall Blk Madeira.  It started cute itsy bitsy figs.  ohh that was  sad to remove them.
