I am use 1-3 Gallon air pots. 3 quart to one gallon rootmaker pots. So far I like them very much. I submerge the pot  in water and then let drain on another bucket to catch extra water. Yes at first the fine wash out of the post, when I pick them up out of the bucket of water. but I just refill when needed. After time this stops.  Both pots can be reused and seem very sturdy. The rootmaker pots are made here in the USA I think.    I will post later this fall as how the roots look.

Thanks for the Info Pete. Yes it is hard getting the out of the sand without breaking a few roots. So far doesn't look like a problem as the cutting has many more. I think it will just put out more as time goes on.

Yes I pray everyday in summer for safety for those north of me. I have been here in Terlingua  Tx for 10 years and no tornadoes here. Mountains all around. Twisters have a hard time crossing mountains. But the thunderstorms that cause them come by heading north. Some times we get very high winds and very large hail for them. As I said I think of those north of me everyday in summer. May Gods will be done each and everyday.

Yes there a lot of great people here. I have many more fig trees this year because of cuttings  from members. Thanks to all of you. Still have some cutting that was sent to me rooting at this time. One day I will be happy to hand out cutting to a new person.  Sure is a great place to hang and grow your hobby.

I mix my own. I use micro nutrients and mpK 0-52-34. Also add sum amino acid to the mix. Not looking for a fast growth. I add sum chicken manure when I add nitrogen only on half a cup to five gallons. This is add only once a month.

Yes I agree. I have several that look like yours. I know they are alive becose they are green or at least part of the stem is green. I have had them drop all there leaves and sit there for several weeks just to green up in the last week or so. No idea why, cool weather and something???  All my figs are rooted cuttings  or cuttings rooting or starter plants. I did dig up a fig stump and broke it apart and it is growing up form the roots. Figs are strong willed and like to grow.

Don't be afraid to take off some of the bottom leaves. It may just loose all of them for a time. But all will come back or at least enough to save the tree. Shade it and put some mulch around it. You must have enough roots to support all leaves. Till then they will droop and maybe fall off.

I am having the same problem with several of my new fig plants. I have a Ischia that is just waking up after 6 weeks of nothing. A black mission lost all its leaves and died from the top down about 3 inches the whole trees is only 6 inches tall. I just left it alone and looked at it today it had three leaves and the top is still dead. I have been have cool nights in the 40's for the most part. I has wormed up to the mid 50's and I can tell that the figs need a mild night to grow.  You plant looks like mine did. Green can be see on the stem. I may die some more but will not die to the roots. Put sum mulch around the roots if you are still having very cold nights. Good luck and hang in there. Figs are fighters and brown turkey are known to be strong growers.

When I was in you area I owned a farm I had cattle and row crop. The soil is low ph I would put on ton per acre and raise the ph .5 of a point. Say 5.5 to 6.0. This a good thing. Yes I know that if you use potting  pine bark peat moss ect. you have a low ph. I also know lime keeps off some pest. But too much is that good?
Never found Martha to be all that smart!!!!!!!! The man with the figs has good looking plants and lots of fruit.
Here where I am not in south west TX I have a ph of around 7.5-8.0 and alot of the land out west has high ph. Not sure if I will ever need lime. Even the water is high ph. I am just asking is this correct to add this much.

Why so much lime? Won't that make you PH go sky high? I put small stones on top of my pots. About 2-3 inches deep. This holds in the moisture and keeps the weeds out.

garden_whisperer  How much die back do you have on the unprotected figs? What are you average low for the winters? I am trying to learn what can be unprotected here at my location. I have average lows around 20 degrees but have seen 5 degrees and 10's a few times.
Do the winter wind seem to affect them much?

Yes KK I find that molasses is very good to use with microbes, in weekly feed for plants. There are many use for it. The microbes brake down the soil and let the plants take up what they need to grow. If you soil is not alive nether will be the plants. Thanks for your input helps to try new things in life.

Take your time, read all you can about them, decide what you are looking for. Then look around you. There maybe figs in your area. Try to root unknowns first before putting alot of money into cuttings. I would send you cuttings but this is my first year myself. Will have some soon I hope.

Yes it is fun to see roots. This year is my first time rooting cuttings. I am grow in perlite in cups I let mine stay as long as it take for them to stand on the own outside the humidity dome. When I see roots I spray the clear cups with paint to block sun form the roots. Then work them out into the air more and more until they can stand on there own in sun.Water them often to keep them from drying out too much. I then repot them into 1 gallon pots. Again this is my first year doing this.
I would put the cutting you have in pic in soil and let the have indirect sun.
