The trees that I started this spring are finally showing a few small fruits here in central Ohio.  Will there be enough time for them to mature and harvest?
Is there anything I can do to slow the clock or speed the maturing process?

My Bronx Blondies are doing great.  I'll be gifting a few at Christmas to the in-laws that remember their grandfather's tree that he used to bury every year in the days of their youth.

One of my new children thinks it is a palm tree.  This was a 3'+- bare root tree that I bought in March.  It is growing well  but only near the top.  Should I prune the top to promote lower growth?
Also, there are no signs of any figs on any of my trees yet.  Can I do something to promote fruit growth?

Hi Bass,  Do you put a repellent in the bag or is the bag a repellent?

Hello from Central Ohio.  I joined the board a couple months back and have really enjoyed it.  I have 3  3-4' trees growing in bottom water pots plus a couple short ones.  I, too, just got some of Jimmy's cuttings and plan to keep a couple and gift some for Christmas.  As my signature line states "I'm looking forward to my first EVER vine ripened fig"

Greg,  I'd love to come see your fig kids sometime.
Thanks, Mark

All,  I got my cuttings started yesterday.  There were more than I expected.  I put some in a plastic box with Spaghnum, three got their own 1 liter bottom watering container and four got put into a Forsythe pot.  The race is on.  Bets, anyone?
I plan to get these rooted, potted and wrapped up for Christmas gifts.
I moved my other potted figs into the garage last night account crappy weather.
I hope to taste my first EVER fresh fig this year.

So far my only taste was within a Newton.  My wife grew up with a tree in her yard that her grandfather brought from Italy.  He buried it every year.  I decided to get on board growing some.  I have 5 in pots and just got cuttings from Jimmy.
I can't wait.  Hopefully I'll get a taste in 2013.

Hi Jimmy,  My cuttings  arrived Thursday.  I was going to try to graft some to my cherry tree, but the authorities in the know burst my bubble.  I'll get them rooted and planted and keep you posted.
Thanks, Mark

My newbie status reared its ignorant head. I see fruit cocktail trees being offered on the Internet that contain apples, pears, plumbs, etc. I assumed that my cherry tree root stock would accept a fig graft. Silly me. What will happen if I try? Will it not take or will it produce cherries that look like figs, lol.
Help, I'm in over my head.

I expect to be getting some of the cuttings that our friend Jimmy Chao offered from his Bronx Blondie.  I'm thinking about trying to graft a couple to a cherry tree that I cut WAY back a couple years ago.  Can anyone offer advise on:
1. Which type of draft would be best?  I'd love to slit the  bark a couple feet off the ground and graft there but I could do it higher up where I cut it back.
2.  Is it an Okay time of year to try a graft in south-central Ohio.
3.  Hints for success?  I've watched some you tube videos, but have never done anything like this.

All The Best to All, especially Jimmy for his generosity.

Yesterday I transplanted my young Chicago Hardy plants from their plastic cups into 5 gallons buckets with bottom watering system.  The mixture is 5 parts spaghnum pete, 1 part organic compost, 1 part perlite, half part limestone granules and half part triple 12.
This morning the leaves look brown on one of the plants.  Did I kill it?

This really amazes me Grasa.
Once the grafts are well established, do you then root the cuttings?
Maybe I'm as much confused as amazed...

On 3/26/13 I purchased a Celeste from Fruit_N_More.
On 3/21/13 I purchased Brown Turkey and Black Mission from Eden's Fruits.

So far the Brown Turkey is ding the best followed by the Celeste followed by the Black Mission.  My mixture is 5 parts Pro Mix )80-90% Sphagnum Pete Moss, slow release fertilizer perlite), 1 part organic compost, 1 part perlite, 1 part garden limestone.
So far the only additional fertilizer that I added was a yogurt cup full of worm castings down the watering hole to create a fertile tea mixture in the water.  I was scared to add a bunch of fertilizer to soilless mix.
I'm in central Ohio which is zone 5.  I've put them into the garage when the weather has been bad.  When it's not supposed to o below freezing, they are staying outside in full sun.  They seem to like that.
Thanks, Mark

I'm a newbie and really enjoy this new hobby and site.  I have three 3-4' trees that came bare root and planted them in bottom watering pots similar to the ones on the growing tip site.  They are all doing well but at different rates of progress.  The one doing the best has buds all up and down the stem that are exposing leaves.
What is the likelihood of harvesting figs this first year if I keep doing everything right?

As I read the post I got all excited thinking I might circumvent the year(s) long process and be able to acquire some seasoned trees.
When I saw Bullets location my heart sank.  I'm in Ohio and he is WAY out west.  In my mind I was rehearsing my begging routine and my bubble burst.
Nice post BTW.

I received my FIRST EVER fig babies last Friday and transplanted them into large clear cups that I poked a bunch of holes into. They are not sitting in any standing water but the soil seems quite damp even after a week.  The Miracle Grow potting soil measured a little higher than 6.5 Ph so I added a little  limestone (granular).
One of the two plants grew over an inch within the first week, the other grew a little.
Yesterday I put them outside for a few hours to acclimate them to the central Ohio weather.
The reason that I'm writing is because the sprouting leaves are pale green which looks sickly to me.  I'm thinking that they should be darker green if they are healthy, but it's my first dance.
I hope to not kill my first plants.
This is the purchase detail if it matters
