Hi GRamaley, thanks for your post! I did the same thing with my raised beds , except I used dried grass clippings instead of wood ashes. The ashes are a great idea also. The ground coffee made my veggis garden smell great! And the veggis grew very well this year. Next year, as I up-root to 5 and 10 gallons, I am thinking of adding composted coffee grinds . James, if I add perlite to the coffee as well as bark, peat moss, etc, shouldn't that help?

There is guy in eastern Richmond who is selling figs off his "Wild Turkey"  tree. He said it's a Brown Turkey, but the fruit is bigger and better tasting, than others. Go Figure!

Hi Pete, cheer up, all might not be lost. Up to last couple days, my VDB figs showed no signs of  getting bigger  ,much less ripening. Today, after several nights of heavy rains, I went back there and saw three ripened VDB figs. The others were still same size as before. With this strange weather, you'll never know what to expect.

Hi Sophie, I too had a bad experience with Edible Landscaping Nursery. I went there in person, since the place is about 1.5 hour from my house. I met the lady who co-owns the nursery. She was very unpleasant and grumpy. Her figs have mites, rusts, and noticeable FMV. I will not patronize them again.

Hi Timclymer, thanks for the photos. My length of the orchard is about 700 feet. I am planning on doing something very similar to yours along the edge of the orchard. I think the fabric is very good idea. I plan on planting very tall varieties over the fabric and place railroad ties as edging along the fabric. The nursery people say that the fabric is good for 10 years. What fig variety did you plant?  I think the hedge looks great! Good luck with it.

Hi PersianMD,  there is a lady in town who is selling a fig called " Iranian Desert". She says she got it from someone up in Maryland, and knows nothing about the variety. Have you heard of it, by any chance. Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Sophie, are you rooting hardwood cutings or softwood cuttings? For hardwood cuttings, I use slightly damp, not wet paper towel inside ziplock bag.I open the bag and check every day. That helps to "air" out the mold somewhat. If there is mold, just take clippers and snip the moldy part only, if it's along the edges. For softwood, I use Bass's technique that on his Trees of Joy blog section. Instead of using black pot, I use clear plastic cup . And I place it inside of a 2 liter soda bottle, that's cut in half. You leave the cap off for ventilation. It should root with minimal watering. For soil, I use 1 bag of Miracle Grow Seedling mix with 2 bags of perlite, all mixed. Hope that helps.

Hi Laura.  Joe Morle in Mass. sells fig plants that are Zone 6 and higher. I planted his figs in the ground near my sundeck. I plan to leave them uncovered this winter and see how they do. Also. have you tried the unknowns from NYC? They should be very hardy.

Hi. I think Lattarula is a classic, simple ,sweet tasting fig. And At zone 7a, it is vigorous and very fruitful ,under right weather condition.

I'm in zone 7a. I had an abundant Lattarula breba crop this year. But my main crop is very sparse. It could be from too much rain( and not enough sun) and cooler than usual temp.

Hi Chris,  Virginia seems to have it's share of "unknown" and found figs. I bet with the mild weather in Virginia Beach, there should be plenty of fig plants. I'm suprised and delighted that Richmond has quite a lot also.

I drove to EL three weeks go and purchased 2 Petite Negri as well as few others. They gave me  very large plants for a 4" pot. They have all three different leaves on them- 1 lobe, 3 and 5 lobes. It looks very similar to Jason's and Pete's.But I don't know how this plant can be dwarf, since the leaves are so large. In my opinion, larger than VDB.
