I have a strange looking unripe fig that has what appears to be tiny flower buds formed outside the eye. Has anyone ever seen this before?

This is another possibility. Hirts also sells Lemon Italian Honey Fig Plant which looks a lot like what you have.  Maybe it was a mislabeled fig?

I think I found the source of my "Ischia." My Lowes fig came from Dewars nursery in Florida. I don't know this for a fact, but I'd guess that Dewars gets their tissue cultures from Agristarts. Here is the "Ischia" page on Agristarts website:

http://www.agristarts.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/plants.plantDetail/plant_id/92/typeID/45/index.htm

The only confusing thing is that it says the fig has a light pink flesh. My fig looked the same as the fig pictured in this post, white with tan seeds. Maybe the color shows up in different weather conditions?

Perhaps this is also the "Blue Ischia" fig? Maybe Hirts also got tissue cultures from Agristarts? At least my description was somewhat close to what I got, even though I wrongly assumed it was Green Ischia.

Also, I see you are in Tallahassee. I'm in the Tampa Bay area and mine ripened last week. I really think the Lowes variety and the Hirts variety are the same.

I saw this article online about the removal of the "fig" from the Fig Newton cookies. The following  reasons for the removal of the fig are quoted from the article:

1. "A Kraft executive admitted to The New York Times that 'it was going to be hard for us to advance the Newtons brand with the baggage of the fig.' Why baggage? Some consumers saw figs as a “geriatric” fruit. Apparently, it reminded others of prunes. The Grub Street blog put it bluntly: Figs were “too laxative-y.'"

2. "Stone adds that, thanks to the popularity of flavored waters, consumers expect fruit flavors and combos to be way sexier than just fig.

'You’ve got flavors like mango-strawberry and grape-lime—all sorts of things that are catching on,” he said. “You have to have a contemporary feel, and I’m not sure if figs fit into that.'"

I really did like it. I hope I don't become too much of a fanatic. The tomatoes and roses take up a lot of my time. I have a garden addictive personality :)

I want to share my experience tasting my first REAL fig today. The only figs I've had before today were in Fig Newtons (meh) and a grocery store purchased fig (awful.) I ordered a Petite Negri from Edible Landscaping earlier in the year and it came with some figs already on it. I left them on because I wanted to try one right away. Today I noticed one was soft and even though it looked like it could use another day or two, I didn't trust the birds and squirrels so I picked it.

My expectations were low because this was a new plant, I picked it a little early and there was a little sap from the top. It was a nice red color inside and it tasted great! It really did taste just like a berry of some sort. I can only imagine if the plant was more mature and I'd wait longer to pick it what it might taste like. I think I'm going to like figs after all. I still have a fig on my Violette de Bordeaux to try too.

This is slightly off topic, but I think many of the destructive invasive species mentioned in this thread were actually imported legally. The US government paid farmers to plant Kudzu. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers planted Medaleuca in Florida for erosion control.

I have a related question. I'm new to growing figs. The only figs I've tasted are in Fig Newtons and one fig from the store that looks exactly like those pictured above. I thought that the store fig tasted like a sweet mushy ball of nothingness. That fig ended my interest in figs for several years.

I grow lots of fruits and vegetables and I recently noticed how beautiful figs are and I really like way their leaves smell. I decided that maybe, like tomatoes and other things, figs could taste better if I grew them myself. I have two figs now, Green Ischia and one labeled Purple Italian. I haven't had any figs yet.

Finally, I get to my question. Can anyone suggest a good tasting fig variety that is far removed from my grocery store sweet ball of nothingness? I live in Florida, so cold tolerance isn't a factor, but we have a lot of humidity. I know it's hard, but could you try to describe the taste?

Thanks.
