I wrap the entire branch with a tube I created that's filled with dirt.

My BT's are about 5' tall now. I had a ton of figs this year that I though were pretty good. Hmmm

I had young trees last year that I added about 3" of mulch to the pots. I then put them in my shed after the leaves dropped and gave them a little water every couple of weeks through the winter. They never missed a beat. I believe that with a tree that can be grown from a cutting, it's almost impossible to kill. As long as the roots are protected, there are no worries.

Dang all this makes me question the 10 BT's I planted.

I airlayer entire branches in the winter. Yes, the entire branch. I then cut the branch into about 8" sections in the spring once roots are visible. I then plant the sections in pots. Its been fail proof for me.

Has anyone else done this?

I just read down the post a little further. Wow, that was bad timing on my part. Ha, now I get it.

I had a tree that got hit with a hard freeze one year. The branches above ground were toast. The tree came back the next year stronger then ever. It was almost like it made it stronger. No worries.

Does any one dust their trees? With multiple trees, I have noticed a lot of wasp and bees. The fruit is covered with them.

Okay, so no need in trying that one. I can hear the birds now, boy they must think we are dumb. I thought about the net idea, but im thinking it may be costly, hard to maintain, and an eye sore. Aside for great figs, I love how beautiful a full grown fig tree is.

There has got be an easier way to protect our figs. What if we have thousands of figs to cover? I read something about hanging pie pans that creat reflection from the sun. And heard orchards use noise makers that make sounds like an owe or hawk. I'm also wondering if it is safe to use a dust for insects?

This little fig had fallen off the tree by the time I noticed it. It could have came from one of the other trees it was sitting beside.

Because of the size of cuttings I sent you, I had to use a large set of loppers. They were hard from me to cut. I always try to throw extras in when I can. We will work on improving our cutting process. Maybe I'll let Randy cut the big ones next time. Hope they all root for you.

Oh, I also wanted to share that we just moved (2)Papa Johns, (1)LSU Black, (2)LSU Purples, (2)Almas, (2)Ischia Greens, (2)O'Rourke's, (1)Magnolia, and (1) Marseille from one gallon pots to five gallon pots today. We had these over a year in the one gallon pots and they were defiantly ready for some room to grow.

We are in Atlanta today and tomorrow. Kids are at Six Flags. We dropped them off and want to check out a Fig orchard or two. Does anyone know of any good ones near Six Flags?

Thanks

Well it didn't sell LOL. And I wont re-list it (at least not yet), because I do value the opinions. Please take a look at the root system on this cutting. I have developed a rooting method that is near 100%.

ascape- for the sake of argument, lets say I have also discovered a way to fully establish roots prior to planting (look at it as possible), would I experience a more rapid growth? I am studying this and will document my result.

javajunkie- your right, I may have been a little sensitive today, but you have to admit, I've been through the ringer. Not that I didn't deserve some of it.

It's good stuff. Everyone keep up the good work.

Can someone else, "an expert" tell me I am wrong? Or at least, that there is (or is not) real documented evidence "yet" to say that a 2 inch in diameter cutting will grow faster then a "typical" rooted cutting.

Think about something for a minute. If you have one 6 foot tall 1/2 inch diameter tree and you cut it back almost to the ground, and right beside it you have a 25 foot tall tree 2 inches diameter that you also cut back almost to the ground; you don't think the larger will out pace the smaller? I'm telling you it will. I've done it. The tree I currently cut from; years ago I tried to get rid of because it was wrapped up with a rose bush. I cut it to the ground. In just a couple of years it was huge.

No sapling would have ever grown like that.

The experience of the people here is why I joined this forum, but up until now all I've been is bullied. I was referred here by a customer. I'm not telling you anything I haven't seen. I think outside of the box and have studied my figs personally for almost 8 years now. So to just discredit what I've done is very insulting to me.

I don't take for granted what I've learned here and I may have been a little out of line saying no one has done what I have. And for that, I apologize. But I have yet to be proven wrong.

I have multiple records from dozens of enthusiast that have identified this tree for me. We put our faith in these individuals. Not one has come back to me and said other wise. If DNA testing is needed, then so be it. We will look into it.

Thanks for the debate. :)

I don't think anyone is really putting into perspective the size of this fully rooted cutting. You all are comparing apples and oranges here. Your talking like its un-rooted and saying things like the little ones take better and bla bla bla. Folk this cutting is rooted. You are comparing a twig to a 1/2 inch dia. cutting. Its not the same animal here. This thing is 2 full inches in dia. I doubt any one of you has ever rooted a cutting of this size. This is currently the only cutting of this size anywhere. And you can't tell me you aren't a little curious about that.

Yes you maybe able to go and buy a six foot tall one gallon tree for less. I have almost 30 six foot tall trees in multiple verities, and not one of them is any bigger then an inch in dia. To retrieve such a cutting, I had to remove a branch almost fifteen feet tall that has been cut back every year. What do you think the cost of that was? It took this tree years to produce the girth on this now completely rooted 8 inch long 2 inch in dia. cutting. Oh and with the dirt and packaging, it weighs almost 5 pounds. With I helps explain the shipping cost.

I have been documenting and will continue to document this discovery of mine; and show you the difference.

One other thing. I have been selling this tree for years to enthusiast all over this country. They have helped us identify this tree. My customers are happy and that's what matters.

If no one buys this cutting today. I will prove its value soon and be selling them to people that would love to own one.

Okay, so we have had "multiple" customers outside of this forum audience that have confirmed this tree as a Genoa. For some time we were unsure. Do you have the DNA of every fig you have possessed, purchased or sold tested? Doubt it. I have explained the characteristics of this tree over and over again. I have provided pictures and sold cuttings to fig enthusiast for years all over the country. This is our conclusion just short of a DNA test. Our customers thus far have been pleased and very helpful. In the end that is what's most important to us.

Please do not assume that there is no difference. Have you or anyone you know ever rooted a cutting of this size? Please be honest. I have, and the results are stunning.

It only make sense, bigger roots=more energy and nutrients pushed upward.

If I don't sell, I will ether adjust the price or plant it myself.

Thanks again for the feedback.

When I removed the cuttings, the branches are usual over fifteen feet tall. This was an experiment when I started. Now I have about 5. These cuttings explode into trees. Its like cutting back a big tree, the following year it takes off like a rocket. This is not the same as a less then 1/2 cutting.

All though the Genoa fig is not rare, a 2 inch in diameter 8 inches long fully rooted cutting is. It has more then 3 years of growth. I'm am trying to determine the value of this. I have continued to drop the price until I get a bit. Your opinion is appreciated.

Looks exactly like my trees leaves and fruit. Genoa for sure.
Got 12 other varieties that we can discuss some other time, once we have finished our judgment of how legit and honest you all think we are. Starting to feel like we are on trial. You can look at our scores and feed back. If that's not enough, don't buy. Thought we would be met with open arms.

Wow, this is very interesting and educational. To think, that my wife and I are being studied like this. We have improved our methods, learned the ropes, and have tried our best to please all of our customers. We have learned a lot, and we consider ourselves part of the fig growing community. Thanks to all that defended us in this post.

Randy (the husband) and Wendi (the wife) LOL.
