I would put dome over it (32 oz clear cup or lower half of a two liter soda bottle) and place in shade. Also be careful not to over water. Without a significant root system there it no place for that water to grow. Don't want rot that baby.

You got to love fresh cuttings. I find them the easiest to root the bad part is have to keep them alive through the long winter. Just be careful not to water to often.

Barry,
This is my post from last year showing how I covered my inground trees.  Look  near the end of the post where I show how I protected a smaller inground tree with an upside down garbage can.  It work well last year for me.  The good news is this year the tree has grown to large for the garbage can method and will have to use the method at the start of the post.

Good luck.

I have a similar situation with a tree I got from a generous member three years ago labeled Green Ventura. The tree looks extremely healthy but never puts out even a hint on a fig. I think this winter I am ago to try and root some cuttings from the tree and see if the offspring will bear fruit.

James,
Keep up the great work and kudos for sticking to your vision. I am sure there were times when you wished you just grew one third the cuttings and just sold them on eBay for three times the price.

Was losing more than half of my ripe figs to birds.  Not just one type of bird but Blue jays, Cardinals and Robins.  And they know when they are ripe.  You watch a particular fig as it ripens and say just one more day and the next morning it's gone.  Had to do something so I built this cage out of 1" PVC. Slide the 10' lengths of PVC over 1/2" rebar that I cut to 30" lengths and drove about 12" into the ground.  Covered with a 25' x 50' piece of netting that had 1" openings.  The front of the netting is weighed down with 2 lengths of the PVC so I just pick it up enter enter to do my picking.    Seems to be doing the trick.

I have been growing a HC here on the island in a container for a few years. Didn't get much fruit this year but the ones I got were very good. Probably needs to be root pruned and up potted. This upcoming winter may be it's last in the garage and I may add it to the in ground collection this next spring. The trick is going to be finding a spot.

I have had good success with the water bottle method filled with pre-moistened promix HP and wrapped with foil. I do girdle a one inch section of bark and apply clonex before filling with promix. I peek under the foil looking for significant roots which usually takes about 6 weeks.

I'm no expert but I'm thinking possibly fig rust. If it is clean up infected fallen leaves to slow down further spreading.

I had rust issue last year for the first time. I sprayed each potted plant at the end season with a copper fungicide. I will probably re spray them before I put them back out just to be on the safe side. I plan on also spraying the ground where I usually keep the fig nursery.

I had gotten a bunch of local unknown cuttings when a neighbor trimmed her tree and I tried storing them in vacuum storage bags from Harbor Freight.  They are working pretty well but I do find I have to occasionally break out the shop vac and suck them down again.  I thought it was poor seal quality on the bags but maybe it is the cuttings producing oxygen like others have pointed out.

Great video Frank.  I was planning on doing a bunch of root pruning in early March.  Bought my $6 Harbor Freight machete and everything.  Video shows me what to expect when I try to root prune that first tree.  I was planning on increasing the pot sizes for most of them but still think I should trim the roots to promote new root growth.

I have just been using a cheap one gallon pump sprayer with the nozzle cut off.  Without the nozzle the water comes out slow so it doesn't disturb the soil.  You can keep it filled with diluted MG solution or any other liquid fertilizer.

Those roots look great.  I used dampened regular peat moss with good results last year.  This year I am trying coir and so far it is also working well.  The key to any of the these pre-rooting methods is the level of moisture.  I find that no matter how hard I wring out the water I still end up mixing in some additional dry material to get to a moisture level I am comfortable with.

Matt I am not sure where you are on the Island but I have bought of containers from Griffins Greenhouse Supplies in Brookhaven.  I think the sleeve of 100 1 gallon trade pots were about $35.  They are reasonable compared to online since you are not paying for shipping.  I also get my ProMix and coarse perlite from them.  It is a bit of a drive for me but I don't do it too often.  Call first.  Once they didn't have the 1 gallons in stock but got them from there warehouse (in Jersey I think) in 2 days.

I had a bad case of rust this season.  I plan on treating my trees with Bonide Copper Fungicide.  I am going to spray my inground trees before I cover them and spray my container trees before bringing them into the garage for the winter.

It is critical that clear away any fallen leaves since the rust will survive the winter and infect the tree again next year. You can also spray with a copper fungicide to help with the rust.

Chad,  I did this on two unknown dark figs that I planted 25 years ago and never covered.  Two winters ago we had a brutal winter and both died to the ground but came back strong.  That was why I covered last year.

I also did a scaled down version on a one year old unknown Greek white fig I planted in the Spring of 2014.  It also survived last winter.
