This will be the first year that I'm putting trees in the ground. I have several pots, but I've chosen three that have gotten the biggest over the last here years. One each of Hardy Chicago, Hardy Hartford, and Celeste. I have backups that will go in the garage.

Most of the rest, I'm going to have to sink pots. Last year I was so disgusted... I trusted someone to water my figs while we were away for two weeks. I came back to almost all my trees with crunchy brown leaves and all fruit dropping. She came over and said she forgot one day... Told her I was not an idiot. Thank goodness all the trees lived.

Back to planting. Much like my Hardy bananas, I'm going to plant deep. Not sure about protection yet, but may do garbage cans or boxes with Xmas lights inside... I'll cross that bridge later.

Here in my area, we're in the 5b to low 6 range, just depends on your location and whether you're on a ridge or in a valley.

Hi all.

All my figs survived the winter in the garage and are now bounding out in growth.
Currently have Hardy Hartford, Brown turkey, Chicago, and Celeste.

I was wondering, with all the experience you guys have, what's the opinions on some of the better varieties to keep in pots for slightly short summers like here in WV?

Thanks gang,

Chris

I'm including a pic of some Celeste and Hardy Chicago rooting very well in water.
What's funny, is that the little HC was trying to produce a little fig! I just saw it and broke it off, but it snapped a pic to share.

You can see it at the end of my paint brush in the pic

I guess I'll try an spot them up soon, because roots look to be a good three to four inches.
Any thoughts?

As always, thanks all!
Chris

Here in WV, they grow like weeds. The back road I drive to work actually has patches where the road is stained from them...

Welcome,
My grandmother grew figs in her ballroom. She bought an inn when I was a kid and the ballroom looked like a jungle. Two walls were all glass, so it was much like a greenhouse.

Special thank you to Gloria for sending some cuttings for my students to help me root! You make a great enabler!
Chris

By the way... Look at how big the windows are in our little country school. Each room has at least two banks of them. I fill them with all kinds of stuff each fall.

I know exactly how you feel. My daughter had never tried fresh figs until this summer. Heck, I hadn't eaten any since I was little. Now we can't wait till more are growing next year.

Every year I have to box trap coons and haul them off.
I elevate the trap on my daughters' small plastic picnic table and bait it with bologna.
Since it's elevated I can't catch a dog or skunk, and coons love 'me some bologna!

Thank you greg,
I asked her to try to get names or at least where it cam from. I hope I get some info
I have to laugh, because knowing her like I do... I wouldn't be surprised if she drives around knocking on people's doors. So, as a thank you I'm working on a painting for her. She's always posting amazing pics of the beach. So I'm going to take one of her pics and paint it

For rooting, I'm going to try the bag method since I've never rooted figs before. From what I've seen, many must use it.
I'm going to have my students help me out. They'll love seeing the roots form.
Thanks all,
Chris

I just spoke to my cousin in Wilmington, NC. She says in her area there are fig trees everywhere and that she would talk to a friend of hers who grows them to see if she could track me down some cuttings or plants to send back. She said she also has another friend who grows enough to share in her yard. I would be happy with a couple twigs, but knowing her she'll drive all over the place trying to find more. If she goes too crazy, then maybe I'll have some to share ;)

What a great set of pictures! Thanks for sharing
Is it typical for this fig to have so many on it at once? It would be so hard for me to resist early harvesting, but I see you waiting until you got some drooping and slight wrinkles on the surface.

I've been flipping through posts, and a few names I see often, and others not so much.
As I mentioned in my first post, I only have Chicago and love the taste. Plus, in the year that I've owned them, they appear to be super easy to grow.

What do you guys recommend?
I'm zone 6a, but very close to 5b, and though I'd love to have another one to put in the ground, I will most likely pot everything and store them in the garage or cellar in the winters. Last year I kept one of my Chicagos in a cold window sill at school while it was small.

Thanks!

Wow,
So jealous of your tortoises. They look amazing!
I've been wanting to get a sulcata to keep at my elem school. We have several kinds of critters, but a sulcata would be a great experience to have in the building. I've been trying to contact breeders to see if anyone would be willing to donate a hatchling to the school... No good leads yet. Know of anyone?

Thanks,
Chris

Jim,
Nope. I work with third grade through fifth mostly, and my kids all say that I'm the plant guy! I think I got them hooked best when I started bringing in carnivorous plants!

Tony,
Sent you an email! I'm in WV too.
I'm near Buckhannon. Where you located?
I'm still trying to convince myself to put one of my hardy Chicagos in the ground in the spring.
Which ones do you grow in the ground?

Thank you guys,
Thanks goss.... And it will be difficult. I work in a small elementary school with big windows, have a large cellar, and a garage! So, when fall comes, I stick plants everywhere! My only plant I don't move anymore is Audrey, my giant philodendron (named after Little Shop of Horrors) I used to bring her home every summer in a pickup, but now I just drive over and water her every couple weeks during the summer.
I get my students into plants too. Each year I start a new unusual plant with the third graders that will follow them through fifth and then go home with them. In the past I've done adeniums, epiphyllum, succulents, etc.

Really looking forward to this forum,
Thanks,
Chris

Why didn't I know about this site earlier? I've been a member of GardenWeb for years

I live in WV and have just gotten the fig bug, having obtained two Hardy Chicago rootings last year and being able to taste a handful of fruit from them this year... Love em!

I'd really like to get a couple more varieties. I posted in GW seeking cuttings or young rootlings. I'm also going to paste in what I put there to see if anyone is interested. I'm really excited to read more on F4F. My grandmother raised figs when I was a kid, but until last year I hadn't tried them out. I grow so many unusual things and seek out the weird and hardy. If anyone else is in WV, I'd love to see what you grow.

Thanks ,
Chris

Below is my GW posting:
I have Chicago, but now that I've given them a try, I'd like to get a couple other varieties that also taste good.
I'm open to different varieties, but have some interest in Celeste, Ronde de Bordeaux, brown Turkey...
I'm looking for rooted or fresh cuttings. I have lots of stuff like hardy cacti, hardy agaves, semps, sedums, basjoo banana, epiphyllums, adeniums, dragons tongue tradescantia. I even have hardy kiwi that can be cut, both male and female. Never know... There may be something's else that you're looking for, just ask. I really do need to update my plant lists

Thanks gang,
Chris
