Subject: Figs From Malta? Replies: 20

HELLO

No matter where I get my fig cuttings from, I always use 1/2 bleach and 1/2 dish washing detergent and scrub them down really good before even starting to root them!  I have found that this really helps the plants in terms of rooting and getting anything that might have hitched a ride along unknowingly!

I WAS TOLD BY MANY HERE ON FIGS4FUN FORUM THAT FERTI-LOME ULTIMATE POTTING MIX
IS THE VERY BEST YOU CAN BUY TO NOT ONLY GROW NEW CUTTINGS IN, BUT ALSO PLANT THEM IN.
AFTER BUYING THIS PRODUCT AT THAT HARDWARE STORE, I CAN PERSONALLY VOUCH THAT THEY WERE TELLING THE TRUTH.  THIS POTTING MIX IS THE MOST AWESOME GROWING MIX I HAVE EVER SEEN.   NOT ONLY DOES IT GROW EVERYTHING GREAT, BUT IT ACTUALLY FERTILIZES FOR UP TO 6 MONTHS OR LONGER DEPENDING ON HOW MUCH YOU WATER IT I GUESS.  ALL THE THINGS THAT MAKE A POTTING MIX BAD,  ARE NOT ADDED TO THIS PRODUCT.  LIKE I SAID, I LOVE THIS STUFF AND I HAVE HAD TREMENDOUSLY GREAT RESULTS WITH EVERYTHING I CAN GET MY HANDS ON FOR FIG GROWING AND CUTTINGS THAT ARE JUST COMING UP..
I HOPE SOME OTHERS WHO HAVE USED IT CHIMES IN ON THIS???

AS-FAR-AS THE BIRDS, I HANG USED CD'S ON MY TREE'S NOW AND WHEN I SEE THE BIRDS COMING, I USE MY BB GUN AND HIT THE HANGING CD'S (NOT THE BIRDS) I DON'T BELIEVE IN KILLING ANYTHING THAT IS JUST TRYING TO SURVIVE!  AND MY SON ACTUALLY IS GOING TO SELL ME SOME OF THE NETTING YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT TOO.. I'M GROWING 3 BLACK MADEIRA TREE'S RIGHT NOW WHICH ARE SMALL AND I'LL BE DEFINITELY USING IT ON THOSE TREES...

WELCOME TO OUR FORUM AND NOW YOURS ALSO!!!
JON, WHO OWNS AND OPERATES THIS FORUM ALSO OWNS ENCANTO FARMS NURSERY IN SAN DIEGO, CA  SEE UP THERE BELOW THE FIG SIGN ON THE LEFT SIDE.. THAT'S WHERE YOU CAN ALWAYS DEPEND ON GETTING THE BEST BANG USUALLY FOR YOUR BUCK.. YOU CAN ALSO SEE WHAT HE HAS FOR SALE AND BUY FROM HIM ALSO.. I LIKE BUYING FROM JON BECAUSE HE DOESN'T CHARGE ANYTHING TO KEEP THIS FORUM GOING!! YOU MUST BE REALLY CAREFUL NOW THAT YOUR DOING FIGS.. YOU WILL BECOME A FIGAHOLIC IF YOUR LIKE THE REST OF US FIGSTERS OUT HERE!  (PLAY ON MY OWN NAME) LOL HA!
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, JUST ASK AND THERE WILL BE SOMEONE ON HERE WHO WILL ANSWER YOU.. GORGI KNOWS A LOT AND JON DOES TOO.. AND A LOT OF OTHERS KNOWS A LOT ABOUT ALL KINDS OF STUFF.. I WILL TELL YOU RIGHT OFF THE BAT THOUGH, THE BEST AND I MEAN THE BEST ULTIMATE POTTING MIX IS FERTI-LOME ULTIMATE POTTING MIX.. FEEDS YOUR PLANTS FOR AT LEAST 6 MONTHS AND ALSO DOESN'T RUIN YOUR PLANTS LIKE MIRACLE GROW DOES..IF YOU HAVE ANY MIRACLE GROW, DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND THROW IT ON YOUR LAWN BUT NO ON YOUR FIGS!!!
I BUY THE 3 CU FT BIG BAG AND IT COSTS ONLY $19.55 WHICH IS A DEAL!  IF YOU SHOP THROUGH ENOUGH PLACES YOU'LL FIND SOMEONE WHO CAN ORDER IT FOR YOU... THIS STUFF IS AWESOME TO SAY THE LEAST... I TAKE THE FIG CUTTING STICK IT 1 INCH FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE POT AND STUFF FERTI-LOME INSIDE IT ONLY AND WET IT AND MUSH IT DOWN A LITTLE AND KEEP OUT OF THE SUN AND I ALWAYS GET ROOTS LIKE CRAZY.. HECK, BRING IT IN THE HOUSE ABOUT 70-75 DEGREE'S AND WATER WITH STERILIZED WATER UNTIL IT HAS ROOTED.. YOU MIGHT WANT TO DO A CLEAR PLASTIC CONTAINER OR CUPS WITH HOLES SO YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE THE ROOTS... REMEMBER, ONCE GROWING ROOTS, YOU WILL HAVE TO ACCLIMATE THE TREE SLOWLY TO REGULAR WATER AND SUNSHINE.. SLOWLY THOUGH START WITH MIXING 1/8 TAP WATER WITH 7/8 STERILIZED WATER AND FOR LIKE EVERY WEEK AND 1/2 DON'T SOAK IT THOUGH.. THEN GO 2/8 TAP WATER AND GO ANOTHER 1 1/2 WEEKS AND DO THE SAME THING UNTIL YOU REACH FULL TAP WATER.. I PARTIALLY ALSO COVER ABOUT 1/2 OF THE TOPS SO IT ALWAYS GETS SOME MOISTURE TO HEAT IT UP A LITTLE INSIDE THE POTS... NOT TOO MUCH THOUGH.. HOPE THIS HELPS YOU.. THERE ARE LITERALLY HUNDREDS OF WAYS TO ROOT FIG TREES THOUGH.. THIS JUST REALLY WORKS BEST FOR ME..
TRY AND NOT OVERWATER.  FIRST TIME, WATER ALL THE WAY.. AFTER THAT USE THE 1/8 TAP WATER LIKE I SAID BEFORE.. AND DON'T SOAK IT.. GOD BLESS AND HAVE A GREAT TIME FIGGING!! Fertilome.jpg

YOUR CERTAINLY WELCOMED FOR THE HELP.. THAT'S WHAT WE'RE ALL HERE FOR!!  LIKE I SAID, WHEN I SAW OVER 100 REALLY BRIGHT JAPANESE BEETLES LITERALLY COVER MY ENTIRE FIG CROP ONE DAY MY HEART JUST SANK TO THE BOTTOM OF MY CHEST!  THE ORIGINAL BLACK MISSION FIG FROM THE OLD DAYS ARE REALLY HARD TO FIND ANYMORE SO WITH MY NEW GAINED KNOWLEDGE OF HOW TO COMBAT THEM, I GOT NEW FISHING LURES AND ALL THE LITTLE BUGGERS DIED WITHIN SECONDS OF BEING SPRAYED AND FELL OFF THE FRUIT!!SINCE I GOT THEM ALL, I THINK MOST OF THEM WE'RE GONE FOR GOOD NEVER TO RETURN!!  JUNE BUGS AND JAPANESE BEETLES I HAVE LEARNED ALL COME FROM THE SAME PLACE AND EAT ROOTS IN THE GROUND AND GO DOWN DEEP IN THE COLD SOIL DURING THE FIRST COLD SNAP.. THEY ACTUALLY START COMING UP FROM DEEP DOWN WHEN IT STARTS GETTING WARMER UNTIL THEY HIT THE SURFACE WHEN THEY ARE COMPLETELY GROWN AND CAN FLY....
GOD BLESS AND MERRY CHRISTMAS...

Strawberry Figs

I started cooking when I was just 12 yrs old. This is a recipe I used to make with my mother during fig season. I would go out and climb in my grandmothers tree to gather as many figs as I could. Most of the time I would eat one and pick one, my grandmother's tree was about 50 yrs old had the best Celeste figs. Now I have my own fig tree and each season I make this jelly and give some to friends and family. They all look forward to the fig jam. I have passed this recipe to my son as he is turning out to be a better cook than I am, but I don't think he will ever out do My Mawmaw or mo

Ingredients

  • 6 c peeled figs
  • 6 c sugar
  • 2 medium boxes of strawberry jello
  • 2 c fresh whole strawberries
  • 5 pt ball jars

Directions

  1. In large heavy stock pot, add mix sugar and jello until the color of pink. Cook on medium heat until sugar and jello is fully melted, stirring occassionaly
  2. Peel figs or puree' them, remove stems from strawberries (may be sliced in halves or pureed). I like mine with chunks of fruit however my son prefers a smoother consistancy.
  3. Once the sugar is fully melted, add figs and strawberries, cook on medium heat until it starts to foam and bubble. Cook for an additional 10 minutes and remove from heat.
  4. Once cooled place mixture into the ball jars filling to the top.
  5. In a large pot boil water and place the sealed jars into the water as to seal the jars. Remove and let cool.
  6. Store in a cool pantry will keep for a year. Share with family and friends ( I normally use the small jars to give to neighbors, family, and friends.
  7. This jelly is very versitle it can be served over icecream, peanutbutter sandwich, hot biscuits, buttered toast, filling for a cake, or a donut filling.

Okay. I'm counting my figs before they hatch. But I'm hoping (and knocking on wood) to have figs this summer...so tell me, what are your favorite fig recipes? I was just sent this by a friend who said it was amazing!

ALSO, THANK YOU FOR THE COMPLIMENTS. IT IS BECAUSE OF ALL THE PEOPLE ON FIGS 4 FUN FORUM WHO HAVE SHARED WITH ME THEIR SECRETS THAT MY SUCCESS WITH GROWING PLANTS HAS MATERILIZED!!!  I TAKE NO CREDIT EXCEPT FOR TAKING THE PLANTS IN AND OUT OF THE RAIN AND PUTTING THEM ON MY PATIO.. SINCE I LIKE FOR MY PLANTS TO ALMOST GO DRY BEFORE WATERING THEM, THIS IS THE ONLY WAY I HAVE OF MAKING SURE THE WATERING I GIVE THEM IS ALMOST EXACT. SOME DO REQUIRE MORE WATERING AND SOME LESS.. I HAVE 3 BLACK MADEIRA'S GROWING AND ONE MORE THAT'S ROOTING RIGHT NOW, AND I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE FIGS TO BECOME RIPE!!  I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE I'M ACTUALLY GOING TO BE EATING THE BEST TASTING FIG ALIVE VERY SOON!!!  I'LL KEEP YOU ALL POSTED.. I'VE ONLY BEEN DOING FIGS FOR ABOUT 1 1/2 YEARS AND I WAS GIVEN THE ULTIMATE SECRETS OF GROWING GREAT PLANTS.. 1. USE ONLY FERTI-LOME ULTIMATE POTTING MIX.. FILL 1/2 OF THE POT AND SMASH IT DOWN REAL TIGHT WHERE THE DRAIN HOLES ARE.  2.  BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL PUTTING YOUR NEW PLANT IN.  HOLD IT DOWN WITH ONE HAND AND FILL UP AROUND IT WITH THE OTHER OF THE SAME (FERTI-LOME ULTIMATE POTTING MIX) AFTER YOU GET IT TO THE TOP OF THE CONTAINER, THEN WATER IT IN REAL GOOD AND MAKE SURE IT'S ALL WET INSIDE AND THEN PUSH IT DOWN WITHOUT HURTING THE ROOTS.  THEN AFTER 4 MONTHS WITHOUT ANY OSMOCOTE, USE A SMALL AMOUNT OF OSCOMOTE 14-14-14 FROM LOWE'S WHICH COMES IN A PLASTIC CONTAINER: "SEE PICTURE"  OSMOCOTE 14-14-14 LOWES.jpg
USE EVERY 4 MONTHS RELIGIOUSLY.. I USE PROBABLY MORE THAN I SHOULD, BUT I REALLY TRUST THIS STUFF.. HAS NEVER BURNED MY PLANTS EVER!! HERE IS A PICTURE OF A PLANT WITH OSMOCOTE IN IT.. I USE ABOUT TWICE THIS AMOUNT ON MY PLANTS EVERY 4 MONTHS..
PV_22_opt.preview.jpeg
I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU WITH YOUR GROWING!!! I ALSO DID ONE OTHER THING..
WHEN THE PLANTS WERE YOUNG, I WOULD USE REVERSE OSMOSIS 99.9% PURE WATER BECAUSE THE FERTI-LOME ULTIMATE POTTING MIX WILL FERTILIZE YOUR PLANTS FOR 4 MONTHS WITH NO OSMOCOTE BEING USED FOR THE FIRST 4 MONTHS. I'VE FOUND THAT THE WATER FROM THE CITY HAS ALOT OF CHLORINE IN IT AND I JUST USED PURE WATER FOR THE FIRST 4 MONTHS.  I HAVE THE WATTS PREMIER REVERSE OSMOSIS SYSTEM THAT WORKS ON WATER PRESSURE SO THE COST OF MY WATER WAS LIKE 2 CTS PER GALLON WHICH I COULD AFFORD EASILY... DOES THIS HELP YOU?
ALSO YOU WILL NEVER FIND ANY WEEDS IN ANY OF YOUR PLANTS FROM THE FERTI-LOME ULTIMATE POTTING MIX.. THE STUFF IS LIKE GOLD FOR RAISING UP FIG PLANTS!!! THEY LOVE IT...

The best fertilizer i've found so far is osmocote 14-14-14 bought at lowes... about $11.00 and lasts me all year.. one portion fertilizes for 4 months!! love the little balls that goes into the pots also.. once you water them, they seem to go down below the potting mix and stay there and you never see them again!! but make sure you watch the monthly clock for 4 months to pass so you'll know when to fertilize again!!  also, i've put quite a bit in some pots and it doesn't seem to burn them at all so I think this stuff is really good!!!  my 1st year black madeira's are already sprouting figs all over the little bush!!! so I know this stuff is good!

And, let me apologize again for the abrupt way that I have intruded on the board.

Utes
I personally wouldn't move it!  In the winter i would water it bi-weekly but not over water.  I would wait to see what happens in the spring!  but make sure your roots are covered pretty good. do not bury them with lots of warm leaves.. just enough to cover the top of the roots by 1/2 foot or so.. I personally almost killed my black mission fig tree by putting too many leaves on the top of it in the winter and forgot to water it like I should have...
what did you decide to do and what happened to yours now that time has passed?

Best thing for you to do is keep everything you have away from anything you bought legally!! and I mean at least 50 feet away and not close to any dirt.. As a general rule i always use the mix of bleach and water and soap and completely clean anything I acquire from anyone just to make darn sure I haven't been shipped anything with a disease in it.. of course I have only bought from the U.S.A. So I guess that does make a difference.. did you get a letter yet?

Saw your post... I hope you decided to leave the figs on it so you could eat them... negronne are a slow growing fig tree and are naturally dwarf size trees... WHAT DID YOU DECIDE TO DO BY-THE-WAY??? Just wondering>>>

Pete ,
I am happy to report that my B.Violetta is starting to wake up and is putting on new growth.

The poor tree was totally root bound. I up=potted it into a 10 gallon nursery pot with many air holes drilled into it .  A Wicked wind storm destroyed my Greenhouse a few months ago . The violet Bavaria did not fair too well , as did several other figs . I ended up moving all of my figs to the barn. It's well insulated and a carriage door faces due south. on the rare day here in rainy Western Washington state . I open the carriage door to give them some well needed sun.
I HAVE BEEN DESPERATELY LOOKING ALL OVER CREATION FOR A CUTTING OR PLANT OF THIS BAVARIAN VIOLETTA.. DO YOU HAVE ONE AVAILABLE YET THAT I COULD GET FROM YOU??
IF SO, PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW MUCH.. I LIVE IN FORT WORTH, TX 76180 AND WOULD "GREATLY" APPRECIATE IT....
THANKS
THEFIGSTER

Hey all, I thought I would share my collection, from Canebrra Australia. I have 11 varieties total, the 10 below and another which I don’t have a pic for right now for some reason – Prestons Prolific.

All are doing well except for my blue province which is heavily affected by FMV, and is kind of struggling. Another plant I got from the same nursery as a bare rooted plant St Dominque Violette never woke up after winter, so I am reservations about their stock, although they will replace the violette next winter. The third fig I got from their nursery the white nicollina is doing very well, as well as some cherries I got as well, so maybe I got unlucky with these two other figs.

Anyway here they are! I have only had them for about 9 months and have not yet had the chance to taste any of them, so very excited to wait the next few months!

White Adriatic

Brown Turkey

Black Genoa

White Niccolina

Yellow Excell

Italian Honey

Blue Province

Pink Jerusalem

My Mystery Cutting

Your FMV problem should go away when the fig tree gets to a certain age!! apparently it's just not old enough yet... Can you give us a picture of your complete fig area so we can see how tall all the plants are?  And thank you for sharing your pictures with us.. loved seeing all those plants...do fig plants cost very much over there??

Update on taste in a day or two!

ALSO, I noticed that you cannot add pictures to the replies unless the pictures are in your pictures folders on your computer.. in-other-words, you can't have the pictures on your desktop or anywhere else as for some reason it won't pick them up and will refuse to add them on your articles...
