Hello Meg,
I have been reading your post since the time you created.
I have heard only good things about Giacomo. He has also sent /exchanged very good variety of figs with Aaron for LosAngelesFigForest. I can not answer your question to WHY he treated you like that but this is what I can tell you: Those wound like marks are due to weather, heat and night moisture in the air. I got few trees this year with trunks damaged like that. They are just trunk cracks and the bark openings from over-watering sometimes after dehydration. They heal within a season.
If you look carefully, some of the cracks on your cuttings have already developed calluses. They are perfectly normal reaction of fig plant to the weather hazards.
If I were you, I would take just one cutting and split lengthwise and check for bugs. I'm pretty much positive that you won't find any leaving things in the trunk. (I pray that I am not wrong, LOL)
In fact those cuttings will root faster than you think because of the calluses on the surface.
Please keep us all posted.

It is a very beautiful fruit, but as a plant AND fruit, I think Jolly Tiger beats MR in taste , looks and leaf appearance.
Either way, you got an amazing fig there. :)

Here's a good one, I have been using them  on our trees. We will air layer more than 500 branches.

Just drill the hole on either one side ONLY. so the screwing the other part wont damage the branch from the top and bottom.
Good luck :)

hello ross,
you can attain real pictures of Sultani fig from Aaron's (the person who introduced the Sultani to this forum) at his Facebook page LosAngelesFigForest .
The Fayumi doesnt show Rimada effect or the star pattern radiating from Ostiole of the fig, so, I'm not sure if the statement of them being the same fig is true.

Or will we be eating dead bugs?
The remains of male fig wasps turn into protain and enzymes and get absorbed by the fig. No trace of wasps remain by the time the fig is fully grown and ripe. Sleep in piece and eat as many as you please. It's good for you.

Cool yes, but it's misinformative and should be destroyer!
The fig wasp which is a Blastophaga Psenes, is not the wasp that is in the video clip.

jeffpas,
"Cactus Mix" type of potting soil seems to be the best balance for figs, but you have to realize that this type of mix dry faster.
You might want to re-pot it and change the soil as much as you can without disturbing the roots too much, to improve drainage.
I don't see immediate threat that plant is in, once in a while, a yellow leaf here and there is very normal.
lastly, bell bottom pots will be problematic for future re-potting, the roots tend to grow across the walls of the pot the plant is in and if the neck of the pot is smaller in diameter than the base then polling the plant out of the pot will be close to impossible.

Most probably original, from a bird dropping. Cherish your find, it's looks very delicious.

This is Sultani fig on the mother tree. Every year the intensity of colors might vary due to climatic seasonal differences. In general the color changes of the fruit during the ripening process is constant.
Enjoy

We have been getting a lot of melon tasting figs this year, but this is due to the plant's age. Figs will show their true taste after the third year, that's when they start maturing.

Hello Pom growers.
Is it normal for some of the pom leaves to curl up and become thinner than rest of the leaves on the plant?
And also, what is the required treatment to get rid of the symptoms ( if it's a disease)?
Thanks in advance.

I personally rather get them around the month of September.
Yesterday, due to my light neglect , I almost lost majority of the plants in pots. I was very close to having a heart attach. Worked on them all day by re-hydrating them and watering them gently every few hours. Was a bad day. The heat way in LA was very harsh and sudden.
Thanks for the heads up James.

The top 3rd picture in the post shows leaves and tree formation pattern of Strawberry Verte. it's a matching with mine. I did some research on the source and mine also had come from John's collection, in terms, I am assuming, is from UCDavis? I could be wrong. In any case the picture in the link I provided is a good match of my Strawberry Verte, so I thought it might be helpful to compare.

I learned a new trick last month and I am starting to apply.
Try to neutralize your soil as often as every month by sprinkling some Gardener's Lime granules around the fig trees.
They keep producing new figs.

The seller, as curtsy , should send you replacement.
Honesty and responsibility goes hand in hand in Fig World.
Good reputation is worth more than money. An honest seller know this.

figpig_66,
from what I have read and heard from other fig collectors, you should stay away from any type of Nitrogen (N) base fertilizer, for its to promote green growth and roots. That's if you want figs on your trees ;)
I hope I am not too late warning you about this.
Good luck?

Hello Mai,
In London, Buckingham palace garden, on the street side there is supposed to be a very historic rare breed fig tree given to them by some Pop from Vatican...I don't know much details about it but you could find a way to get cuttings. The tree is for sure dormant.
Please be discrete and wear your black Ninja Suit.

Vasanati- is a green fig with purple ribs or bronze fig, I'll find out this coming summer for sure. There is one growing in LAFF.
Vardika- (check my profile picture for this variety)
Smyrneika- (maybe, but name suggests its from Smyrni, today's Izmir region )
These figs are believed to be indigenous to island of Cyprus.

Sid,
After carefully studying your plant and all the information you provided I am reluctant to say that your plant is a Mission Fig/ Franciscana.
The only thing that is still haunting me is the pinkish hue on the leaf stems. Somewhere in the strain there is a trace of a hybrid but it has been dominated (overpowered) by the domestic Mission Variety.
It's a very delicious and hardy variety.

ok, we will get there slowly LOL

more questions. (about the mother tree)

Have you observed the mother tree, I am interested in mother tree more than the cuttings that you got from, which are clones of the mother. (good thing)

-Do you remember the mother tree?
-Was she from a seed (grown by itself) or another cutting (given to you) or bought tree (from third party)?
-How old was she when started to fruit?
-Where was she living? If there were wasps there?
----------------------------------------------------------

more questions. (about the fruit in the pictures)

The white speckles and the crack can lead one to believe that the fig could be caprified.
- Have you done any seed test, meaning, have you floated the seeds or can you do it still? If they sink that would mean the seeds are fertile, thus  Caprified.

figgysid1

Those leaves are not of VdB.
The pinkish hue on leaf stems usually indicate the origin being from seed usually. Also can be hybrid,  most hybrids do have pinkish hue on their leaf stems. But I can always be wrong too :)

How old is the plant, and when in it's life span did it start fruiting?

edit: Is this plant in Hawaii?
       Does Hawaii have fig wasps?

I have a question.

I see people put Dall'Osso in their wishlist as if that's a MUST have fig.
here's the question: Do you even know how it tastes? Then why are you wishing to have it?
Guess what. It doesn't taste like expensive fig at all. So hold on to your money folks, LOL
