If you didn't catch the following info on Pruning, it might come in handy as you "shape" your tree.
Thanks to Pete S.

yes, I am Fleetwood, lower Westchester. Perfect fig growing region, LOL

I don't know anything about that fig, do you have pictures?

It did have a dormant period, right after I brought it in the basement, all the leaves fell off within a week and as I said, all was good until recently...I am thinking that maybe since we had several days of abnormally warm weather in late December, that it may have triggered growth but the strange thing was that it hadn't received any water???  I will attach photos asap.

I was asked to introduce myself from other members so...I live 30 minutes outside of NYC and have always has a fascination with figs (my favorite fruit) and fig trees. I guess it comes with my Italian roots. I purchased my first tree (Ficus Carisa..Higo) last summer, it is about three feet tall and I was told it is winter hardy. Since I have an emotional connection with my late father through this tree, I am attempting to take excellent care of it. That may sound kooky but it is my story. Anyway, as I posted on other postings, I brought it into my basement, stopped watering it as suggested and two weeks ago, boom, it budded, I bought a grown light and am now watering it and treating it as a house planet until the spring. I have to say that I am floored by the friendly response that I receive after I incorrectly posted on someone else's posting earlier today. Very helpful advice. That is my story and I welcome all advice on how to make my dad proud. Earman

Hello everyone, I just joined and can't believe the wonderful support that I see on this site. I bought a small fig tree last year and moved inside my NY basement in late December but it has budded and I was told it will most likely now die. Any suggestions, I purchased a grow light and began watering it. any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

I am new  to growing  fig trees and this site but am determined to make my tree grow in honor of my dad who had a massive (8 ft tall tree) in our backyard in NYC. My question is..."i brought my three foot  potted tree inside my basement for the winter in Nov 2013, I read that I should stop watering except to keep the soil damp and in late dec, it budded and grew tiny leaves..I was told that it if budded in the winter, that it would most likely die, I got nervous and began watering it and purchased a grow light (75 watt)...so should I stop watering it and keep the light on, water and light, no light...or wait until the spring and buy a new tree, LOL...help!!!
