Subject: Where to get planters? Replies: 19

I eat a lot of pretzels so I always keep the giant plastic drum-like containers they come in as planters :) and like many others have said- ask around ... I have two decorative planters that I bought but every other one I have made from stuff that otherwise would've been thrown away or I got for free... Good luck! Lots of options!

@Aaron4USA, nope they are made of thin pieces of hand shaped and dyed glass, sometimes with wire for support (as the veins, for example) but you are right they are reminiscent of the body world plastination look and method! Although not as eerie that's for sure.

I went to Boston this weekend and visited the Harvard Museum of Natural History and there was a neat display of glass plants made by two glass artisans in the late 1800's... worth checking out if you can get over there, or here is the link if you'd like to read more about it: http://www.hmnh.harvard.edu/on_exhibit/the_glass_flowers.html

All of the examples were BEAUTIFUL but I took some pictures of the fig! FIGured everyone would appreciate these... hard to believe they're handmade from glass:

I have two little guys who are doing one heck of a job at surviving... one is a beat up stick that my puppy was chewing on. I don't know where he found it because I usually do a good job of gathering any cuttings up but anyway, it was about 5 inches long with only one set of nodes. It started to rot in some perlite but I didn't want to give up on it so I threw it in some soil. It has been resting in the dark corner behind my tv box (=nice and warm) and viola! about a month later, it has a nice root! It isn't the prettiest specimen but it sure is trying.
The other little guy was the tip of one of my cuttings that I threw into a used yogurt container with some soil and now he has his first real leaf! The piece of cutting was the size of my thumb nail :)
Hope you enjoy my pictures!

Ah thank you rafaelissimmo! I always wondered the proper term for it because I knew it wasn't compost tea technically but didn't know it by any other name, happy I now know... I will just pour it over my outside heap then... which is near my azaleas, which LOVE IT! Great insight, thank you all. And soni, great add-on, looks like we don't have to do much for the little guys, woohoo

Hello all!

I load my indoor compost pile with nitrogen rich goodies like coffee grinds, tea, plant cuttings, veggie and fruit bits, etc. It makes a great tea which drips down and I dilute it for my baby figs. My question is this- if these babies are in small plastic containers, how often should I apply this liquid compost tea to them?

Thank you! Hope everyone is staying warm :)

My first fig tree came from my high school boyfriend's father... it was a sucker from his giant tree that he had in the backyard of his city row-house. He had brought it from the small town where he grew up in Southern Italy. Fast forward about 7 years later and I still have the tree. I have taken plenty of cuttings this year because I am moving for graduate school and want to bring some babies with me! I hope to move somewhere warmer, that is for sure.

Thank you all for the warm welcome! I love reading your stories. It is very neat that so many people have deep relationships w the fruit, such as a family member sharing a cutting etc. @Dallasfigs, yep self portrait but my name is not Lela, close though! and @Eboone, I did not wrap it, but I did insulate it pretty well on the ground. I have learned my lesson though :( I think I may just build it its own house next winter haha.

Hi there !! I am new to this forum and fairly new to figs in general :) I have read yalls posts for a while now, and I have finally decided to start commenting! Thank you all for the great advice and sense of community around here.

I am excited for spring that's for sure! I have a mighty big celeste in my yard here in Maryland, but it has never produced ripe figs. I am distraught over this, since I have babied it year after year. Mr. Saxon has helped me out, stating that celeste figs tend to be fussy. I am going to try shaking things up a bit this season, per his advice. Here is to hoping that my mama tree doesn't die at the hand of this gruesome winter storm! I would be very upset to say the least.

I also base a lot of my artwork around nature... and sometimes figs :) A few of my pieces are on this website if you'd like to take a look!: http://deyo.carbonmade.com/

Anyway. Just wanted to say hi! Would anyone like to share with me a story about how they became interested in figs?
