I have some 1 year old potted fig trees that I need to store for the winter. Two options:

A: my basement which is 61 degrees

B: my unheated-detached garage. No insulation. It's pretty much a shed.

Any suggestions are helpful.

I was thinking of building an insulated box for my garage...

I have a small(maybe 10-12 inches tall) Algerian Watts fig in a 1 gallon pot that is like to trade. I don't know how to post pics but you can email me: mcs805@aol.com and I can send em that way. Let me know what you have to trade... I'd obviously want a small plant

I had to move a 4 or 5 year old fig trees a few weeks ago and the winter really did a number on this tree. Even with it being wrapped in died down to the base of the tree. The new shoots the came up look diseased and the leaves are disformed...this tree has never displayed any signs of fmv or anything unhealthy. I did notice for jelly-like substance on one of the big cuts I made so maybe it's diseased?

My question:
Can I air layer one of the new shoots or do air layers need to be done on old wood

I think there's sketchy stuff going on with a few ebay fig sellers... Just look at the bidding history and you see patterns with certain names.

That's a hardy variety so putting it in the ground should be fine as long as you wrap it before the winter

What do you mean when you say "5" leaves? Is it the fifth leaf up from the butt of the branch?

I just put my rooted cutting in containers under some lights. Do the lights stay on 24/7 or did I want to mimic what it'd be like outside(12ish hours of sun).

I'm in zone 6b can I just stick them outside during the day or are they too young and vulnerable for that? I would bring them inside at night

Subject: Fertilizer question Replies: 25

So I've been looking around the web about fig tree fert and everyone says something differant.
Person A: figs should get a fert with low nitrogen because it'll just put on leaves with high N content
Person B: plants need 3x the amount of nitrogen...
Person C: get a balanced 10-10-10.

I have some espoma plant tone in the garage( i think it's like a 3-4-5 ratio). Any good for in ground or potted plants?

Have you done trials using differant fertilizers and seen side by side comparison?

What types of fert do you guys use? I have 2 small in ground fugs(maybe 1-2 ft tall) that I put in last year. I have given them anything ever. What's a good mix for spring?

I know everyone wants a fig tree with a name, but I don't know what it is. I was given a tree that is probably 4 years old from an old Italian couple because it was too big to bring in their garage. All I know is that it's from "Southern Italy" and it is a green fig. From the few I tried last year if say the inside looks like what I see people call "honey" types. The interior is that golden/tan/brown color. I don't have pics of the leaves since it's dormant.

I'm obviously a newbie and I dying to build a little collection, so help a brother out. I have no problem sending first so you know I'm legit.

I'm having the same issue keeping the humidity level at optimal range too. I use a plastic shoe box w/ sphagnum it's a pain in the ass trying to balance it....lid cracked...gets dry/humidity drops...put lid on/shoots up to in the 90's....etc

What can I do to keep in steady?

I have them above my stove in a cabinet. The stove light puts out heat so that's why it's warm in there
Right now the temp is 73 degrees and the humidity is at 76%

I didn't really wet the moss that much. I sprayed it with a spray bottle and only made in damp. I have the plastic Shoe box slightly open now to try to lower the humidity. Thanks for the input guys I appreciate it

I'm doing the sphagnum moss in a plastic shoe box method for a few cuttings....
I put a thermometer in the box and it's 79 degrees and 94% humidity. Do these numbers matter during rooting like it does once they are transferred to a cup/pot?
