If I were you I think I would try coco coir. It is very forgiving with moisture levels.

Still ripening figs here in NC as well. My harvested sweet potatoes and white potatoes think it is strong and the figs keep putting on babies. I should get some more satsumas soon too.

I haven't tasted it yet. I got it from Wellspring as a TC plant and it grew only finger leaves last year. I planted it outside and it died to the ground. This year it gave me two types of leaves and no figs. I am going to prune it back to a single stem and hippie for the best this year.

It is supposed to be 103 here tomorrow and super hot for the rest of the month. My garden was looking really droopy before I watered it. My AC was out this weekend at home and at work as well. Not fun.

I noticed today that my Olympian, which died almost to the ground in winter, has started forming figlets.  It looks like I'll get to taste it again this year.

Do you water the cuttings?  Are they green wood cuttings?

You weren't kidding about having a 'large' airlayer!  Looks great!

Two of my baby RDBs (rooted this year) were hit by a late frost after I decided to plant them into the ground way too early.  Another was stepped on my my dog, or maybe son, or maybe me (! I hope not!) and now has a horizontal stem.  Luckily all of them have survived and are still growing and throwing new leaves or buds.  This is one strong variety!

Mine all died back to very close to ground level as well  If you pinch at five leaves or so, won't your figs almost be touching the ground?

So.... My Olympian which I left untended in the ground as a new tree has died back almost to the soil level.  It has one green bud leafing out at an inch above ground level and another forming at half an inch above the soil line.  I did add a couple inches of mulch in February.  Next season I will be adding the mulch in November or December since we got a freak 17 degree low in Mid November this year.  So far all of my new trees are showing signs of life except for one Hardy Chicago which is a couple of years old and still dormant or dead.  I still have a bit of hope that my Olympian may bud out further up the trunk, but I don't think it will be much further up if it does.

Tough decision. I moved several figs outdoors in March since our long term forecast called for no more frost or freezing temperatures. In early April we had a frost that set back the figs I put outdoors. Now my best ones were the ones I kept indoors until last week.

Mine all rooted and leafed out and I have planted them in the yard. I'll try to remember to give a followup if they bloom this year.

That really is amazing! The closest I had was a Black mission last year that sent up three branches over three feet each, but since I planted the cutting directly outside the winter has probably taken all of those gains except girth of the base and root growth. Did you cut this one up to overwinter?

I think high humidity is best for cuttings, but once well rooted I think open air is best for leaves.

I rooted a Desert King in water last year. It took longer than other methods and it seemed like I had to change the water all the time. I think that a mixture like coco coir that allows air and water to the roots and which is also resistant to rooting its the easy to go.

Update: Many didn't survive, at least not the top growth. My black mission is dead to the ground. Hopefully the roots survived. My 'celeste' from lowes (which looks nothing like celeste) also died to the roots. My Alma and Hady Chicagos look great, my brown turkey looks only tip burned and the rest are in a bad, but unknown condition. I am going to stop prodding and make another assessment in June if they fail to leaf out by then. Some of them are covered in black mold as well which I suspect is a bad sign.

So almost all of my plants came through ok. My figs look a bit more damaged, but I am pretty sure they all survived. Rosemary looks good.

So here are a few pics of my palms and figs covered in ice. The big palms are Sabal Palmetto, two smaller palms are Butia Capitata and Trachycarpus Fortunei, and peach is labeled. The rosemary is the fully green little block of ice. What sort of damege should I expect? All of the fig trees pictured are only one or two seasons old.

I picked the worst forecast, with the best showing that we will be 11°F next Wednesday night. 11° is still very low, but manageble, and -2°F seems unheard of around here. I am going to go with a plastic and mulch solution. I thought we were out of the woods since the forsythia is already blooming.

I really am such a weather denier/optimist that I always try to fool myself into believing that we will have a mild winter. And -2 is probably like a 50 year record low in this area. Can you imagine a south Floridian getting down to 20 degrees? Basically if this report is true then half of my garden will die.

The problem is that almost all of my trees are still babies. My oldest is only four years old. Good thing I have rooted several extras this year. Where is global warning when you need it?

Have you checked the weather lately?  I check the weather from multiple sources regularly and they all now predict that the coldest temps of the season will occur next week!  Long range forecasts previously had shown a warming trend into spring after this current round of cold, but some forecasts for my area in NC show -2!!!   What should I do for young in ground trees?  The current plan is buying a lot of mulch and hope for the best....

I agree, lack of light and too much moisture. One of my cuttings was doing this in a humidity chamber but is now recovering well in open air.
