If you want more growth and node spacing, I think a higher nitrogen fertilizer or supplement would do the trick.

Be careful if you have a gas heater, the vent pipe gets really hot. It will melt plastic touching it. Dont ask how i know....

Bill  I started using small cups for rooting I believe they are around 8 oz I like them better than the large cups once the roots fill up the cup they slide right out with out disturbing the roots that sometimes happen with a large cup and I sit them gently into the 1 gallon pot without disturbing the roots and they continue growing like nothing happened

Very nice! looks like a fig parfait.
How long did it take from cutting to this stage?

Also using the big hydrofarm one and thermostat. Works great. You will have to play with the probe position to get the temp where you want it.

What about using one of these hollow metal tubes that you can stab into the heart of the rootball?

Crunbar, you would add lime to raise the PH.

Waynea, i know. Ive been everywhere in my area. I quickly glanced at the walmart bag last time i was there but was in a hurry. It looked pretty good but ill confirm today. I found orchid bark that is perfect. But it comes in 1cf bag for $15! Worse case ill have to buy a few $14 bags because i have 3 more citrus trees barerooted in my garage that are in cedar shavings. Running out of time.

Ive been paying $14 from a nursery. Ive been to probably 10 different stores and most just dont have the right size. The $14 bag is good straight without sifting. I did see a $3 bag at walmart that looked promising. Im in need of about 10 cf. so im gonna check it out today.

I looked into the gritty mix and started gathering materials. But i realized that it would be too heavy for my larger pots. Ive used 5-1-1 and been really happy with it. This year i'm using extra large perlite and growstones in a 5-1-3 ratio. (Bark, promix, growstones/perlite)

Thanks for the suggestions. I am not in a very humid environment. They are not root bound. I just want to change them into a more draining bark based soil. (Variation of 5-1-1)
So that would involve bare rooting it. I think i will risk it and just do it. The figlets are just little nubs.

I would like to change the mix and up pot a few trees. They have just come out of dormancy and have figlets and buds opening. Is it too late to change without the figlets dropping? Id rather wait another year if that is the case.

How cold does it get? I believe there is a good amount of extra protection just from being in a covered area.

Maybe transition them outside under a covered area for some indirect light?

definitely not deer, (enclosed backyard). I'll look into squirrel protection. They are pretty sneaky and tease my dogs everyday.

There are squirrels running around my back yard. Something took close to 60 Jalepenos off my pepper plants a few weeks ago. I suspect it is a squirrel for those. Hope it is shooting out fireballs for a few days.! Didn't think that they would eat the leaf buds off my figs though.

Even after all that, ive had cuttings that start to turn to mush from the inside out. I usually just put them in a pot of soil and leave them outside. One of my attempts from last year miraculously sprouted from one of the middle nodes months later.. Sometimes they come back from pretty grim situations. As said above, yours still looks good.

I have no problems leaving them there. But now that I have a much stronger heat source on, (grow light), I'm just wondering if I should take advantage of the heat.

I have several cuttings at different stages. I just transplanted a group that rooted in moss to clear containers w/ 60% perlite 40% promix in a humidity chamber under grow lights with bottom heat.

Another group that hasnt rooted yet on moss on the heat pad. (under the light as well since they share the heat pad.)

Yet another group in cups of perlite/promix that hasn't rooted yet on top of the water heater (probably upper 60's to low 70's temp)

Should I move those to under the grow light? They will be much warmer than from the water heater alone. (no leaves or roots showing)
Or should I wait on those?

Thanks,
Eric

I used some today and shook the crap out of it for a few min. It re-dissolved nicely. Thanks for the reminder about the Pro-tekt James. I do use that as well although not as often. The 2 step mixing process is kinda annoying and my pipette gets all gunky.

They do seem to breakup a bit when shaking. It sounds and feels like good size chunks. I'll give it a good mixing before i use.

I have a container thats about 10 months old. When i shake it it sounds like rocks are on he bottom. Is this just the minerals clumping up? i shake it up and use a pipette to take from the top. Am i going to run into mineral deficiencies?

Ive had a fair amount of experience with moldy cuttings. Ive tried everything. Bleach, h2o2, alcohol, none have ever survived for me once mold hits it. I think the spores work their way in deep and kill the cutting. Maybe amputate if you have a long one.

Thanks for the responses. The leaves dont always fall off. It definitely slows down though. Ill continue to fertilize. Theres no chance of freezing here.

My favorite method is with long peat moss. I just use Saran Wrap and string to tie a large ball of it around the girdled branch. Tried with soil, but just made a mess on the ground. If u have a sturdy container, u can probably pack it with just about anything moist.

Thanks for the replies. My plan is to keep it in a container. Not sure what variety it is. I saw it a long time ago and it didnt have any fruit so i left it alone. This time around it is loaded with figs, but they are all small and unripe. I have plenty of space to fill so its more of an experiment. Ill check on the mother tree periodically to try to ID it when they ripen. For now ill just keep this one in the pot in my warm garage for a bit and then transition it outside.

Stumbled across a giant unknown bush/tree on a public trail today. I decided to take a few specimens to experiment on and practice. One of them is a tall sucker that I pulled up with a good amount of roots. It is 5 ft tall from roots to tip! It had no leaves except 2 baby ones on the very tip.
I wasn't going to be home for a few hrs so I wrapped the roots in a wet paper towel to keep moist.

I just put it in a 5 gallon bucket with promix. It is a little over 1 ft buried and 4 ft sticking out.
Was this the right thing to do? or should I chop it down some? No pictures at the moment.

One of my lemon trees would not bloom at all this year. I let it dry out a bit to stress it. And then hit it with a hefty dose of liquid fertilizer. Within a few days, many blooms appeared.

Would this work in hotter climates? Ive seen mixed reviews that say the roots like cooler temps, and some say they like warmer temps. I would guess that it can get pretty toasty under the black plastic.

I would say it is very much like red wine. I like them a little colder than room temp. Too cold and it mutes the flavor(s). Although still refreshing.

I bought some cuttings from him a few months ago and they all molded and failed. He said he would replace them if needed. Anyways, i cant email him through ebay to ask him. Im getting an error message.

Figured id give it a shot here.
