Where I am from is actually the most far north they grow 'natively.' We're only a couple of minutes away from Point Pelee National Park.

The cacti (Opuntia humifusa) might brough here centuries ago by First Nation Peoples. The park is the epicenter of the Caldwell First Nation's traditional territory.

I'm always curious about the history & stories about old fig varieties. One thing on my mind, that are the oldest fig trees and fig varieties, in particular ones from the Near East more specifically Ancient Israel and Northern Europe (France, Britain & Ireland, the Channel Islands). There's something about reconnecting with the past.

My dad's ancestry is from Guernsey, is there any varieties there besides/older the Brown Turkey??
Anyone knowledge about this? Thanks

Hmmm interesting, especially considering the Cajun connection to "Black Beauty 10". We need to put this to a genetic test.

It would be awesome too if there a governing body/authority on fig varieties. Really cool.

If I'm reading this correct at least one other person possesses this variety? (It would be nice to test its genetic profile) Anyone know individuals with cuttings? Thanks :-)

The Figaholics website suggested the "Black Madeira might actually be identical to the "Violetta" of Portugal (Mainland) as well as the "Figo Preto"? http://www.figaholics.com/cuttings.htm

Or by ultilizing genetic testing. I'm curious on the history of all figs. I love history and the stories behind the scene – what's the journey of each and every variety. Sadly Dan's blog doesn't seem available any longer.

I was thinking yogurt parfaits and home made oven baked pizza or something to accompany high end red wine. We grow regular stuff but for the special stuff. To share with a young love kind of stuff.

If you had to rate:

1) Gourmet figs, why & how?
2) Common figs
3) Overrated figs
4) Bad/poor figs

and 5) the holy grail figs (if you could only preserve 1-3)

Thanks

For fun: If you had to pick a fig tree (Ficus Carcia, variety) to symbolize the one Adam and Eve, (emphasis on symbolize) used in the Garden of Eden described in Genesis chapter 3. Which would you pick? and what would be your criteria? Personally, I envision an exotic one with of large and smooth leaves with orgasmic tasting figs. How about you? No right or wrong answer.

Thanks guys :)

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5446137 What do you think is the oldest and or the best representative of the oldest domesticated Common Fig (non-Smyra)? I understand what appears to the oldest remains of domesticated figs were found at Gilgil not too from Jerusalem? Kind of curious to any guesses old varieties that are still alive today.

Any insight appreciated.
