how i wish I lived in USA and could buy those fig varieties for only $3
here in Australia, the only chance in hell of getting fig cuttings of anything other than Brown Turkey is on Ebay.  I see last weeekend, the bidding price got up to $66 for fig cuttings - its just crazy prices here in Australia.

Interesting to see edible backyard urban homesteaders and the diversity of grower types on this forum.

200 fig varieties Harvey?  Wow!

And Wills 177 fig varieties wow!  And 200 blueberries  - yes I recently got 9 blueberries and keen to eventually propagate them when the time comes when they’re bigger as I’d really like to have a couple hundred blueberries as they cost $13 in my city for a small punnet .  I will research how to do propagate – cant be hard, as I’ve done it with other plants like lavender.

Waynea – 210 varieties! Wow again

Well Kausikck

You've had alot of success over in South Australia with sourcing all these fantatic and rare fruit varieties.
Alas over in my cold eastern state in Australia they choice remains - Brown Turkey or Brown Turkey again.

I can but dream only of one day having Panache fig, or Strawberry Verte fig or........the best of the best Negronne.

sigh

Speedmaster
i can totally identify with your post.
Where I live in Australia there are no chance of buying anything but a couple of common fig varieties from plant nurseries
so getting from my wishlist has been so far impossible.

What a shame our Aussie plant nurseries dont keep and sell heritage and rare fig varieties.  I have tried for a long time to source such  in Victoria and Melbourne.

Best of luck Geoff

Dave, thankyou sooooo much for posting these two photos of your passion fruit vine frames.   I've got several of these plants in the ground and have been wondering what sort of frame I'd need to put in place before they really start growing (its winter here still) so you have answered this for me thankyou.

Also, from my understanding one doesn't need to hand pollinate, the bees do this job.

thanks for sharing Ohjustaguy /Kevin, you have truly transformed your front lawn into an amazing edible project.  I checked out your video and then went onto your website, and on your website your May photo just shows how much its truly grown and your July new video shows a food forest!   Amazing work you have done there.  So fresh fruit and veg that you can just simply walk out the front door and pick - sooooo much better than relying and driving to the store for groceries 3 days old.

oh this is so inspiring.  Thankyou!

Plus you have such a great idea going with the worm towers - i reckon I might try that one...

Yes Kausickck

I also bought fig cuttings from the very same Ebay seller a fortnight ago for the first time - and was very happy with the transaction - and I've just bought more from him last night after getting advised from this forum.

It sounds like there is alot of varieties on offer at this once a year meeting, so as their sold at $2 a pop there, I think I will travel interstate this time next year and attend and just buy every variety thats on offer.

Thanks Nichole, yes I’d read the perils of growing fruit from seed, but groceries stores never knew the variety of these plums etc, and so I thought I’m prepared to take the gamble.  Actually thats a VERY good idea to graft these seedlings onto dward rootstock.

Wow Grasa, you have really packed a punch for a city plot!  Thats very impressive what you’ve planted and the diversity too!  There’s even berries I’d never head of before, so am now going to google them (Marionberries, salmonberries).

Jkuo sounds like  you have truly developed your suburban edible oasis – and to have everything so fresh to just pick and give to your son too - and Im going to even google your berries (pineberries,  goumi bush, Juneberry).  You must have a real true green thumb there.

Very very inspiring...

Thanks so much for posting your photos and plan of your edible landscape Nichole - truly inspiring and amazing what you did to the place.  I can see how you miss it!
You have masterfully and carefully packed in so much in such a compact space - wow.

This is what I'm trying to do here in Oz at the moment.  I am growing fruit trees both in the ground and about 20 in pots (some bought dwarf stock and some grown from seeds of my favourite fruit that I've bought in shops but couldnt find the plants to buy in nurseries and so have grown my favorite varieties of plums, peaches, apples etc in pots, so in a few years they should bear fruit as they are still quite tiny at present.

If you were in Melbourne I'd invite you around for a cuppa and sit out in the backyard :-)

regards

Thanks for the tips guys.

Thanks Enigma just looked at ebay now after you letting me know - that particular seller had gone to the SA Rare Fruit Fig grafting session that fortnight ago and obviously got a whole heap of varieties.

Word on the street is that you can buy bundles for only $2 - BUT - as you said you have to be physically there at the meeting held somewhere in SA and be a member of their rare SA fruit society AND its only held one or twice only a year!

Should I EVER travel overseas again, I know what I'll be doing - I'll be taking cuttings of figs everywhere and buying all the stuff from nurseries of fig varieties and then posting them back home to myself (yes I will take the gamble!)   Really, that is what the early settlers and the mid centry migrants did when transferring to a new country.  They got away with it, and I will try!!

Its cold winter here in Australia, fig cuttings time.  If any fig enthusiast would like to sell me cuttings of their figs especially the varieties I seek, you'd be most welcome to contact me.

As a fellow Aussie you'd know its impossible to get anything other than Brown Turkey and just the most common of all figs from nurseries.

thanks in advance Gen

(trying to expand from just having my Brown Turkey 1 year old potted tree)

Dave / Garden Whisperer - thankyou so much for sharing your story!

You have turned a horrid life situation that was thrust on you unexpectantly around, and developed not only a way to sustain your family with growing your food but also cleverly developed income lines as well.  Your story is really inspiring for me to read.   I wish you well on your new career, your family and homesteading!

Anyone here become an urban homesteader on their small city house block?  Trying to pack it all in on a compact allotment?  I'm interested to hear if you have grown the many areas of homesteading - vegie patches, fruit trees, chooks, composting, bees, solar panels etc  along with your fig trees, and what was it that started you on this journey?  What inspired you?

I live in inner city Melbourne, surrounded by neighbouring properties with concrete gardens or manicured lawns.  I think back to that show I used to watch 30 years ago 'The Good Life' and chuckle. I drew alot of inspiration from the youtube video on the Dervaes Family family urban homesteading over in America and what they can do and produce on their city block.  But my initial inspiration was a combination of self sufficiency, access to organic foods (too pricey for organic in our shops here), access to fruit that I love that has very short stocking store times here (my favourite plum is only in stock less than a week each year here - so I started growing the pips!), access to fruit one can never buy in shops in my city (eg. pepinos  and soon to be fig varieties one day), and a determination to change my health around and start learning about nutrition for healing, superfoods and growing foods, and back to basics I guess.

What fertilizer do you swear by for your own fig growing (particularly pot grown figs) to enhance a bumper crop?

Do you make your own fig fertilizer perhaps?

Its too early days for me to give a recommendation on this topic as I am new at growing figs.  I can however share that when I grow my vegetables and other fruit trees, passionfruit and pepino fruit shrubs, that in my experience comfrey tea encourages leaf growth but didnt have much impact on harvest. Worm juice on my fruit trees and vegetables had an effect within the week encouraging new growth and a good degree of impact on harvest yields.  I have yet to use seaweed or seaweed extract, but have heard from other vegetable growers that seaweed collected off the beach, and then dried out in the yard and placed on or dug in the soil has worked well for their home vegie patches.

So from your experience, what would you believe to be the best fertilizer that increases fig harvest?
